Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

One of my favourite pairs made by my friend. This was a lovely skein of sock wool bought at a wool show
I’ve tried to hide my horrid bunions!

Crochet throw I made using a pattern from “ 200 crochet blocks” by Jan Eaton

Can anyone recommend a beginners crochet kit? I want to try and make something like these at some point! Would they be difficult?

I can knit in a basic way- not sure if that helps or not?
Xx

And current project, a small baby car seat blanket with a heart motif for my newest grandson who we will soon start having one day a week. Using up some red left over from a school cardi.
My project after that is a blue buggy blanket. I’m going to have another go at crochet “ waffle” stitch. I got in a muddle with it last time I tried but planning on watching a few YouTube’s to get to grips with it.

Picture of blanket so far

That is probably crocheted in the round which is straightforward but not sure about the patterning, is that a kit? Have a look at the online yarn shops like lovecrafts, woolwarehouse, black sheep etc as they may have kits.
Or use YouTube

Knittingnanny · 22/11/2020 17:57

Actually forget that! It’s not crocheted in the round it is prob a rectangle folded in half and sewn up

lazylinguist · 22/11/2020 18:13

sophs29 - I bought it as a 'sock set' of 2 yarns. I was going to do the heels yellow too, but wasn't sure where to change colours and thought the shape of heel in my socks might not suit being highlighted in a different colour iyswim.

Lovely blanket, knittingnanny!

Thank you, I have realised over the last ten years of being a nanny, that the smaller blankets get used a lot but not so much the bigger ones. When the first was born I crocheted a lovely cot sized lightweight white blanket only to discover that babies now sleep in grobags and blankets are not safe.

I've spent a very satisfying weekend assembling some of my temperature blanket - I'm pretty much up to date now, and just need to keep adding road as we get to those dates (if that makes sense). There'll be another 9 rows in total, so it's going to be bigger than a king size bed - and far too heavy to be of any actual use!

Oh well, it's been an interesting project for the year, and while it hasn't produced a very even rainbow, it's quite fun seeing where we had random hot spells!

Wow, that's brilliant, BookShark! Where I live, I fear it would mostly be blue, if blue represents rain. Grin I live in a legendarily rainy place.

BookShark · 22/11/2020 18:42

Grin. No, it's temperature - each colour represents a 5 degree (Fahrenheit) band, so in theory, you get a rainbow effect. In reality, we seemed to skip spring so I'm missing the green stripe. Hasn't got cold enough to use the dark purple yet, but I'm hoping for a white Christmas!

lazylinguist · 22/11/2020 18:52

Ah! Well it's not much colder here than the rest of the UK, just wetter. So I guess I wouldn't have a monochrome blanket. Grin Anyway, it's a lovely idea and very beautifully done!

Well done for persevering! I made a Temperature Scarf one year... I got bored by the end of February and sewed it up into a little bag instead 😂

NerrSnerr · 22/11/2020 18:57

I love that blanket. I'm really contemplating making a temperature or weather scarf next year but I'm also wondering if I'll get fed up. Might give it a go.

Make sure you find a reliable data source that you can check if you forget a day.

Bye 😢

tizwozliz · 22/11/2020 20:20

Carrying on with easy stuff, a crochet shower puff. Could have done with an extra round really but ran out of cotton.

ClinkeyMonkey · 22/11/2020 20:39

@tizwozliz A crochet shower puff! That's a great idea. I love anything with a practical use rather than ornamental stuff which would just sit around gathering dust (and aggravating DP's asthma).

tizwozliz · 22/11/2020 20:57

I'm going to make a few to go in Christmas stockings. I was passing by the Range earlier and I know they carry this cotton but then I saw the queue and changed my mind!

sophs29 · 22/11/2020 21:06

@gettingolderbutcooler if you have/use Pinterest, search on there "crochet tote bag" and you'll get lots of free patterns. They look fairly simple and if you're unsure on stitches etc I find YouTube really useful to watch along!

lazylinguist · 22/11/2020 21:13

Aww sorry gettingolderbutcooler! I've never used a beginner's kit for knitting or crochet tbh. I just looked at YouTube videos and then graduated to Ravelry patterns!

Inspired by this thread I’ve been making a paper chain! It’s a bit messy and scrappy but so is everything I do tbh. It’s a nice quick fun project tho

Oh yours is more festively coloured than mine, petridishmystery! I only just got back to mine tonight as I've finally finished my socks. Mine goes with my living room decor but it's not very Christmassy!
