Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

Ooh I love that orange mohair! As usual, I'm looking at buying yarn in muted colours but admiring other people's bright ones! Bright coloured clothes don't really suit my colouring and my house is mostly kind of neutral and Scandi-ish, apart from my living room, where I had a bit of a moment and went for teal and painted the fireplace mustard yellow! Shock - (that's why I made my crochet blanket upthread in those colours).

I've used a Stylecraft yarn that looks like that Aurora one and it is beautiful. I crocheted a scarf that fitted the colour changes in the yarn perfectly.

Orange mohair though...? Shudder. 😂

Liltzero · 24/11/2020 10:34

Marking my place. I both knit and crochet.

lazylinguist · 24/11/2020 10:41

I love that greeny turquoisy one, bruffin!

Even DS 25 has got a little excited Grin
We both really like the green one as well, but i really like the noir, its got a purple in it, i think dd will love a hat in that.

Knitting network also do a £19.99 mystery pack as well

DH and I had coffee at a local mill yesterday and spent a pleasant half hour wandering roung the shop choosing what we'd buy when we won the lottery - there was a grey cowl neck jumper and it was soooooo soft - cashmere, it was beautiful. It was also £999. Can you imagine - you'd never dare do anything while you were wearing it but sit in a chair and be mindful about your £999 jumper. But it was soooooo soft. I've never used wool with cashmere in it, too expensive and the handwashing would drive me demented.

diplodocusinermine · 24/11/2020 10:53

Oops - meant to say the jumper met all of Emoji's criteria above.

lazylinguist · 24/11/2020 10:59

Hi Liltzero - got any projects on the go at the moment?

I've just ordered some Drops Nepal in 4 colours to make the Lettlopi Vest! Dithered a bit over colour choices, and I'm worried about sizing. I haven't the foggiest about positive and negative ease - well, I know basically what they mean, but I still have trouble working out what size I want.

Reassure me, wise knitters... The pattern says the chest sizes are M 87cm L 91cm and XL 96 cm. Now I'm 106cmaround the fullest part of my bust, but my own jumpers range between 88cm and 102cmwhen I measure them. I'm thinking I should go for XL? Not least because, as it's a sleeveless sweater, I'll always be wearing a thin, long-sleeved t-shirt under it. Any advice?

I crocheted the very first blanket I ever made in Sublime Merino Wool, it's lovely but cost a fortune and weighs a ton!

Barmbraic · 24/11/2020 13:26

I remembered and found the most beautiful crochet blanket my mum made in the back of ds's wardrobe. The picture doesn't do it justice. I'd love to back it somehow, maybe in navy or royal blue so the work stands out. I'm not a sewer. Would anyone have any ideas how to do it?

That's really beautiful, Barmbraic! Sorry I'm no help with altering and adding to things!

tizwozliz - it's amazing how heavy things feel when they are hand-knitted with real quality wool, when you're used to shop-bought clothes. My smallish blanket made of Drops Nepal is surprisingly heavy too!

Barmbraic that blanket is lovely. The above website has an easy method of attaching fabric, but the pattern of your blanket might be a bit too open.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 24/11/2020 15:09

If you're cursed with a large bust, I find using my high bust measurement is the best way to size it so it's not too large around the shoulders and neck. You have a bit of flexibility with a vest though.

I'd maybe do a blanket stitch around the edge then a stitch every so often throughout the blanket to hold the two layers together Barmbraic but I've never done it so it's just a guess!

lazylinguist · 24/11/2020 15:27

Thanks for the tip, Flavia. High bust measurement puts me at exactly the XL size, so I guess that's what I'll go for. I'm a size 14, so I guess the pattern isn't designed for anyone bigger than that!

Now the wait for the yarn to arrive.... Actually, better check I've got the right needles. However many needles I have, I never seem to have the right ones for my next project!

Barmbraic · 24/11/2020 15:58

Thanks for the ideas. I'll have a look and do some more research. I think because it's so open it's going to be difficult.

Crazzzycat · 25/11/2020 11:33

Been a bit quiet because I haven’t actually done any knitting over the past few days 😬

I love that Lettlopi vest @lazylinguist! What colours did you go for?

And that blanket is just beautiful @Barmbraic 😍

lazylinguist · 25/11/2020 11:45

I went for a darkish grey rather than the brown in the photo, because I didn't like the browns available in the Nepal. Then an off-white, deep ocean (kind of teal-ish) and light grey green (which goes with the deep ocean better than it sounds).

I only finished MIL's socks a couple of days ago, but I'm itching to get my teeth into a new project, so I hope the yarn arrives soon! The paperchain is all very well, but it's a bit simple and repetitive!
