Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

I don't want to google. what is among us?

It's an online game that's very popular at the moment. It's kind of like a simple murder mystery, from what I gather. One person in your online game is designated the perpetrator and everyone has to work out who it is while bumbling around completing various tasks.

Thank you :) I'm afraid if it's cute and i like the images I'll follow up and start playing :)

lazylinguist · 21/11/2020 20:58

TheSunIsStillShining - I still don't think I could get away with boxy!

I have never bought yarn in another country! In fact, I think I've only ever bought yarn in 4 different shops (one local to where I used to live and 3 near where I live now) and online!

I'm not a big fan of the game but participate in some family games with parents and niece and nephew in Australia. We're fairly useless which amuses the kids greatly

InspectorAlleyn · 21/11/2020 21:38

Hello. I hope you don’t mind me joining? I love to crochet and during the first lockdown I did several jumpers and a fair bit of amigurimi. I’ve not managed to do much recently (I’m a teacher so work is exceptionally busy) but I am currently making a Baby Groot for a friend of DD. After that, I’d like to make a few gifts for Christmas. Wool Warehouse has seen a lot of my money over the last few months Grin!

Just finished back of Aran cardigan. It's looking a bit, erm, small. I think I might be knitting for pre lockdown me! Maybe when I block it ....

@ClinkeyMonkey looks nice, but I don't understand. Will it be a turtleneck? it just seems so long and narrow at the top. Am I missing something?

@lazylinguist
whenever I go abroad I make a point in looking ahead a bit on gmaps to see if there are yarn shops. Then try to go to them accidentally in lunchtime or just when moving from point A to B :) When with H I don't mention the premeditated bit, just exclaim: wow, a yarn shop! Can I go in? :) I am pretty sure he knows what I'm doing, but he still plays along.
There is a small town in Belgium, which is always our first stop after crossing by car. Veurne. There are 2 yarn shops and 7 chocolate shops. Boys go to buy chocolate, I go for yarn and then we meet in the town square for coffee. It's one of my fav holiday rituals. :)
The best random yarn shops are in Italy though. 2 years ago we went on a 2 month roadtrip w/my son. Once in a lifetime (hope not) type of thing. No real agenda, only first 3 nights booked and then choose someplace on the map. I found the merino/cashmere local yarn near Udine. A perfect sock yarn that is all over the place colorful yet still tasty near Milano. And lime green soft wool (also locally made) close to Chioggia.

The other fav holiday tradition is that although I honestly never look up Games Workshop shops (warhammer) we always find one! And as we love the world and have model army already it's always fun to go in and get a small character. To be fair, as it is a very male dominated world, usually these shops fall silent when a grown woman enters and asks about specifics :D

Among us is the most addictive game ever.
We always play with 2 imposter because its better. We've been playing since about 5pm. Shock

TheSunIsStillShining · 22/11/2020 02:08

I'm already addicted to StarCraft, no need for another one. Thanks for the heads up to steer clear :)

ClinkeyMonkey · 22/11/2020 03:00

@TheSunIsStillShining The cardigan has raglan sleeves which will taper off at the top in an elongated triangle for sewing along the front and back sections. I'll post a photo when I finally finish it!

TheSunIsStillShining · 22/11/2020 10:33

oh, makes sense. My raglans are always a straight line, hence I didn't even think that these could be those. silly, I know.

lazylinguist · 22/11/2020 12:54

Ah - a fellow teacher, InspectorAlleyn! What subject? I'm not busy like you because I'm very part-time (not really by choice). I still don't manage to get as much knitting done as I'd like though! I have, however, finished MIL's socks.

I just got Among Us this morning at the dc's insistence. Not really getting the bug so far though- both games so far I wandered about a bit, trying to work out where I was and how to do tasks, didn't get killed and the game ended.

Anyway... looking forward to browsing sine patterns for my next project this afternoon. Might cast on a pair of socks for ds too though. No hurry for those though - they can be a 'side quest'. Grin

lazylinguist SEND primary teacher so everything is very full on! I imagine you are a teacher of languages?
The socks that you have made are wonderful - lucky MIL. I’ve never tried knitting but I’ve always wanted to learn. Would being able to crochet be an advantage or not?

lazylinguist · 22/11/2020 13:42

Yes I think so. I did it the other way round- I was a knitter first, and I found crochet a bit confusing at the beginning. But I think the fact you're used to controlling yarn and tension helps. Most people seem to find crochet easier, but I don't!

lazylinguist · 22/11/2020 13:46

That's right. Secondary teacher by trade, but since we moved to a new area 6 years ago, jobs have been non-existent (always too far away or the wrong language!) so I became a kind of peripateric primary MFL teacher and adult ed teacher, which I actually really like better than secondary but demand is limited and it doesn't pay very well!

I'm getting there with the first glove. The second one should be quicker as I had to do some deciphering of the pattern.

Nice socks and glove!

I've got the yoke finished on my jacket, I'm going to switch to the sleeves now before deciding if I have enough wool left to do a hood. My DDad has given me his old Aran jumper to turn into a V neck so some knitting surgery awaits me too. I do love ripping out Grin

lazylinguist · 22/11/2020 15:44

Knitting surgery is another thing that I'd categorise as advanced wizardry.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 22/11/2020 16:03

Ah well, once you've done it a couple of times you get recklessly confident Grin

sophs29 · 22/11/2020 16:09

@lazylinguist those socks are beautiful! Literally looks like some bought from a high end shop! your MIL is so lucky! hope she appreciates the work gone into them! Smile

lazylinguist · 22/11/2020 16:31

Awww thank you, sophs29! I think they're the best ones I've made. It's the first time I've done different coloured toes, but I really like it so I think I'll do more like that. I need to use up some of my stash on socks rather than keeping on buying expensive hand-dyed stuff though! Ds won't care about the yarn quality, just the colour and comfort, so I'm going to offer him the pick of my suitable stash yarns!

TheSunIsStillShining · 22/11/2020 17:04

@lazylinguist
can i ask what language?

lazylinguist · 22/11/2020 17:16

I teach French, German and Spanish, but only primary level Spanish because I'm self-taught and still learning. I have a degree in the other two, but Spanish is now massively popular in schools, whereas German is virtually dead. Hence the lack of jobs and the reason I'm learning Spanish! Fortunately I love learning languages as much as I love knitting. Smile I was supposed to be taking an A Level in Spanish in the summer, but obviously it was cancelled. And no teacher-assessed grade for me, because I have no teacher.

sophs29 · 22/11/2020 17:35

@lazylinguist I love the different coloured toes! especially as there is speckles of that colour throughout the sock! makes them look that bit more special!
