Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

Just in case there is anyone else who likes complicated socks

I hope that works! I’ll stop the Rachel Coopey adverts now 😂

Helocariad · 20/11/2020 16:18

I sound like an advert. Grin
It works though- just had a look again!

I’m going to sound like a total fan girl now, but she also does a sock yarn that’s pretty good: CoopKnits Socks Yeah

Fabulous, will look it up. Thanks Grin

lazylinguist · 20/11/2020 16:22

Those look amazing, Crazzzycat! I have not yet dared depart from the sock patterns in the book that rescued me from sock-failure, but I'll consider a Rachel Coopey one next time.

I actually think I'm going to have to make a page in my journal for things recommended on this thread as it goes along, otherwise I'm constantly paging back to look at things!

Do any of you have favourite japanese knitters? I love the style of layering and boxy, yet stylish fashion they have.

I very much like it on them... I don't think it would suit me at all though!

OP posts:
TheSunIsStillShining · 20/11/2020 16:41

I am sure that it's not suited for me either, but i don't mind :) I have no style sense anyway

lazylinguist · 20/11/2020 17:00

I'm certainly no fashion icon either Grin But the deconstructed, boxy look makes me look like a big, booby bag. I need things that are a bit, but not too closely, fitted! I've not yet managed to knit myself an actual garment (beyond hats, scarves and socks) that fits. Still thinking about that Neville sweater from upthread, but wondering if something a bit less casual would be better, so I could wear it to work.

What I wouldn't give for some boobs :) When I was pregnant/BF I went up to a cup size C. Since then back to B. And to make it worse, never really had a waist, even when I was unhealthy super skinny.

VienneseWhirligig · 20/11/2020 17:10

I've made a start on the Apple Tree blanket. I've frogged it twice already because clearly I can't read! I think I'm ok now though.

NerrSnerr · 20/11/2020 17:15

I have got this far with my skeleton glove. Did do the thumb but knitted it too tight so just unravelled it all. I might start something else tonight and take a break from the glove.

@NerrSnerr nice! :)

lazylinguist · 20/11/2020 18:10

What I wouldn't give for some boobs

I think it's one of those things - women with big boobs often wish they had small ones and vice versa! Like hair too - I have poker-straight hair and have always wanted curls or waves. Hair straightening seems strange to me. Grin

The skeleton glove is fab!!!

Oh no all the socks and not enough time!
lazylinguist · 21/11/2020 09:20

I'm nearly done with the second sock for MIL, so I need to decide what I'm making next (apart from the ongoing paper chain, which I doubt will be finished for this Christmas anyway Grin). Tempted as I am by the Among Us amigurumi, I fancy a bigger project... probably a jumper/cardigan for me.

@lazylinguist
what yarn do you have in mind for it?

Everyone: what's your fav sock heel type. Can't find my goto sock pattern, might as well try something new....

I hate it when i actually do a big tidy up exercise. I can't find my things for weeks

Crazzzycat · 21/11/2020 12:44

@TheSunIsStillShining, I’ve only tried two types - the square (or Dutch) heel and the afterthought heel. I much prefer the look of an afterthought heel, but must confess to being too lazy to divert much from whatever a pattern suggests 🙈

The only change I always make is on the toe end. I have weird toes, so my feet are practically square on that end! Never noticed that until I started knitting 😁

Crazzzycat · 21/11/2020 12:48

This is the pattern I use when I’m having a break from my usual sock designer 😂.

Afterthought heals work particularly well with self striping yarn as it creates a lovely pattern on the heel 😊

lazylinguist · 21/11/2020 14:02

I don't know what the kind of heel I do is called. I just do what it says in my book!

TheSunIsStillShining - not sure. I'm thinking maybe an Aran yarn. I've been using so much fine sock yarn lately that I think I'd like something that knits up a bit more quickly, especially as it will be a much bigger project.

Ideally I'd like something not too complicated but with a bit of 'interest' - so maybe a bit of cabling or a Fairisle yoke or something. I love the idea of doing some colour work, but I don't think I'm ready to tackle an all over pattern atm!

Just spotted this thread, hope I'm ok to join.

I've lost my crochet mojo a bit recently. Saw the among us characters earlier so just started one. Need a nice easy project so I can actually finish something!

NerrSnerr · 21/11/2020 19:21

I also have no idea what sock heals I do- I just knit them.

I have picked up the gloves again and did the thumb again much better.

I'm desperately thinking of something to knit for my mum who has been alone for much of the year (lives 5 hours away). We're hoping we can see her at Christmas and although our relationship is a bit tricky she's had a rubbish old time of it so I want to make her something. Time is not on my side and my list is already long 😬😬

lazylinguist · 21/11/2020 19:56

Og course, tizwozliz! The more the merrier! How about a hat, NerrSnerr?

OP posts:
tizwozliz · 21/11/2020 20:31

One among us character finished. I don't think I got the visor quite right, but nevermind.

NerrSnerr · 21/11/2020 20:36

I might go for a hat @lazylinguist- or something along those lines as she does go for long walks most days.

TheSunIsStillShining · 21/11/2020 20:45

i don't want to google. what is among us?

TheSunIsStillShining · 21/11/2020 20:50

@lazylinguist
I don't know if you like boxy when it's aran or prefer a bit of fit there too...but...
I always select a pattern and try my hardest to go by it. in 30+ years I have not finished anything according to pattern :)

a few months ago I found an aran weight merino/cashmere yarn I brought back from Italy years ago - still remember the shop/village

I did a simple boxy with a same weight/diff color (simple merino from NYC trip 4 years ago) yoke. If you would add a cable down the arms that could work.

Btw - weekend quiz... I was organizing my stash and it took bloody ages as most of my yarn is from trips around the world and they all have a story. Do you have the same? How many countries do you have yarn from? :) And which is your favaoruite?
(I used to travel a lot for work and some for holiday)
