Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

Here’s my lockdown 2 project. My first attempt at socks.

One of my knitting group friends is a sock wizard, she does 2 at a time on a big circular needle with a technique called magic loop. Although I’ve been knitting and crocheting from age about 8 ( now 64) I can’t get to grips with socks!
Just finished a grand daughters school cardi, next project is finishing an abandoned jumper project for me. I like knitting them top down in the round ( great book by Ann Budd is my bible!) as there is hardly any sewing up.
Sadly years of knitting has ruined 3 of my fingers and now I have Heperdens Nodes which are often quite painful
Not giving up yet though! I’ve got 9 grandchildren to knit and crochet for! I get very random requests, a bikini for Barbie, a blanket for a toy mouse, a miniature rug for a dolls house, a jumper for “ evacuation dress up day at school” etc
Lovely thread

Winginit73 · 18/11/2020 23:18

Thank you all, I've got through the whole thread now and saw the tips re google translate so I might brave the Spanish pattern. I don't have a good track record with amigurumi though, even with English instructions!

Crazzzycat · 19/11/2020 00:24

Lovely socks NiceCardigan!

I’ve finally decided what sock pattern I’m going to knit. I cast on tonight and already finished a cuff. That’s pretty quick for me! Will share a progress picture tomorrow 😊

@Winginit73 hi, if you go to this Instagram page, she has put simple English crochet instructions for the among us characters in her posts.

Ooh, I'm in too please! I crochet (taught myself a few years ago) but not knit (tried and failed, although I must try again at some point).

I'm currently halfway through an amigurumi griffin, as requested by DS. That's gone in hold for a while though as I catch up on my temperature blanket - it got a bit neglected over the summer, and I now need to do about four granny squares every day to catch up. Which doesn't sound a lot, but I don't get as much time as I'd like to just sit and crochet!

Not really sure what I'll do with the blanket once it's done - it's going to be ridiculously large. Seemed like a good idea at the time though...

SoupDragon · 19/11/2020 07:28
@WoodbytheRiver would you mind sharing the source for the among us character. My daughter is a big fan. I had a search in ravelry but the patterns were mostly in Spanish!
I do have a rough English translation of the one I used. I only used google translate plus crochet knowledge to do it so it wasn't difficult.

CrochetBug · 19/11/2020 07:44

The Instagram page that @WoodbytheRiver posted is the same pattern that you shared @SoupDragon. But in English. Luckily I saw that post before I spent my morning translating it!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 19/11/2020 08:16

Knittinggranny show us the Barbie bikini!😁😍

4 a day sounds like a lot to me!

My new resolution is to spend less time faffing about on my phone and more time knitting and crocheting. It's silly - I would feel guilty sitting down to knit during the weekday for 15 mins when I'm not working, and yet I fritter away loads more than that on my phone. This thread doesn't count as time-frittering though, obviously! Smile

I made the rabbit once. Just casually left it in the middle of the room. Everyone died of shock thinking it was real.😄Looking to maybe recreate the Father Ted scene maybe...

Want to make the others but never seem to get round to it. There a super cute hedgehog, but l couldn’t upload him.

Hide under it and do some more crochet? Mine keeps me warm in the evening while I'm knitting.

Oh, that squirrel! Tempting... Because I don't have enough WIPs already Grin

I split for the sleeves on my jacket last night and I'm wondering if I'm being thick or if the instructions have lost something in translation.

I've knit to the end of the row at the back and then it says I have to use the working yarn to provisionally cast on some stitches at the armhole to join the front and back. But then later on it says I have to unravel this provisional crochet to pick up stiches for the arm. This would just leave a giant float surely? Confused I ignored it and used scrap yarn but it's definitely confused me.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 19/11/2020 08:56

Pattern mistakes🙄it becomes a whole new game trying to solve them doesn’t it?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 19/11/2020 08:58

Yeah the squirrel is cute. I’m going to make the hedgehog next.

Trouble is DS keeps asking about his jumper which was started 3 years ago. But he’s 6ft 4 and it’s so much knitting....

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 19/11/2020 09:11

I know! The more I think about it, the less it makes sense, because thinking more I'm not even sure it's possible to unravel it without cutting one of the ends if I used the working yarn.

Yeah, that's a lot of knitting! I was doing a jumper for DS recently until I decided stuff it, googled Shark jumper and ordered him one. He's only 4' Grin

Sarahduckobsessive · 19/11/2020 09:45

I’m in too! I’ve rediscovered my passion for knitting and crochet during lockdown. Currently churning out sirdar Alpine cowls as Christmas presents (slightly boring and mindless) but discovered a brilliant stash buster pattern for crocheted baskets done with multiple yarn strands so now I can buy more yarn!

Hi, can I join in? I've knitted all my life really, used to knit lots for my children when they were young, now they're all adults and no longer interested really, although eldest dd would like gloves if I could find an easy pattern. I've recently started again to keep my hands busy and am knitting for a friend's grandchildren. I've knitted a hat and am now working on a little bolero jacket. I've also had a crochet blanket (Attic24) on the go for two years! I keep picking it up and doing a bit. Sadly I got rid of most of my wool when I moved house last year, so need to find some nice wool for a new project of some sort. 🧶

CrochetyCrochet · 19/11/2020 11:26

Ooh, Sarahduckobsessive those baskets look amazing! Stash busting too!
Would you mind sharing where you found the pattern?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 19/11/2020 11:35

Dh was contemplating my yarn stash the other day.

‘We really need somewhere to store this crap’...

Crap!😡 cheeky twat. I immediately bought more😁

He’s got 5 motorbikes in our garage...... and talks to me about storing ‘crap’😤😠

lazylinguist · 19/11/2020 11:38

So glad so many people have joined in with the thread! There have been 'share your finished projects' type threads before, but they seem to fizzle out quite quickly. I figured there must always easily be enough currently knitting and crocheting MNers to warrant an ongoing thread.

Do you all only knit/crochet at home, or do you whip out your WIPs in public? Grin I used to take mine with me when I took my dc's to their extra-curricular activities and sit by the pool/sports hall knitting away, but they've given up those activities (even in non-Covid times). I have a spectacularly productive knitter friend who knits everywhere she goes!

5 motorbikes, TheEmoji? Shock I thought my dh was bad with his two pedal bikes and umpteen fishing rods. My yarn stash is pretty modest really. Must try harder. Grin
