Adult colouring in books

Am going to order the Animal Magic book from Amazon. It looks like it would be nicer to do with markers for brighter colours. These are recommended in the Amazon reviews. Are they worth it?

Thanks!

ALovelyTrain there are about 9 blues, although most of them are either quite dark or veering towards to turqouise so maybe not what you'd want for sky. There are 2 that I reckon would be OK though.

I might just have popped into WH Smith at the station and bought one on the way home last night. Blush.

DS2 (aged 7) wanted to help and we spent a quiet half hour colouring in using the large collection of random colouring pencils that we have bought for the DC over the years.

He had seen me bring it in, so I couldn't sneakily hide it.

wagglebee I went into WHSmiths and the pot of pencils I mentioned in the children's section has 100 pencils and is £10 and comes in a pencil case. They also have a case of 100 colouring pens as well for the same price. The section on adult colouring is now quite big but very expensive - unless you want professional pencils or pens head to the children's section! Grin

I also found in The Works a botanical colouring book to do with Kew gardens. It has a colouring guide but there's no reason at all to follow it! It's £3 (WHSmiths had it for more than double that - I'm so glad I didn't buy it, I almost did!).

My DH bought me a colouring book yesterday! Grin

Now I just need some pens...I had pencils for my last one, but the colours just weren't bold enough.

Becca A 100! They sound great. Thanks, I'm in town tomorrow so I'll have a look although our WH Smiths is a bit shit small.

I want to get the Enchanted Kingdom book tomorrow too. Noticed on the reviews for both Johanna Basford's books that they've improved the paper since I bought the Secret Garden one. Hoping that means they're on with fine liners now. All the sharpening to get in the tiny spaces means the pencils I do have won't last long.

My "local" one is very small as well so hopefully you won't have a problem.

Gel pens!

I saw the art therapy book and a set of plain and metallic gel pens and got them on impulse. Totally hooked now. Very destressing.

The gel pens are beautiful vibrant colours, really precise, don't "bleed" and more importantly cost about £3!

"All the sharpening to get in the tiny spaces means the pencils I do have won't last long"

Would using both ends, so you have alternating sharp and blunter IYKWIM, make them last longer, Wagglebee?

I want my pencils to be brighter! really vibrant, which is why I am gutted my fine liners bled through so badly.

Maybe it is just that book and one with thicker pages wouldn't be a problem, but then you can't shade, and I am enjoying trying to shade.

I wonder if the really expensive art colouring pencils that cost like £70 are really that much better? I want vibrant coloured pencils badly.

Me too U2. The really expensive £70-odd tin keeps niggling at me. I don't have enough colours either and it really would take markers to do those elephants justice with real jewel colours. Like you, am enjoying exploring shading but think I need a blender of some sort to blend. Still, a nice change!

I saw adult colouring books in the works today. I've never been in to colouring, always preferred drawing my own stuff.
Still don't colour in my own work much. I used to add bits to my colouring books as a kid. Give the cute bear fangs and so on. Grin

I mentioned upthread about the Faber Castell Polychromos. Now I know that they are very expensive, but they really are vibrant U2. The beauty is that you can get so many shades with just one pencil.
I must say that if I was buying them just for me, I wouldn't really be able to justify the cost, but DH and DS1 also have the bug, so we split 3 ways.
We have the set of 60, which we got (new) at a pretty good discount from a business seller on ebay (free p&p).

If you have a Hobeycraft near you, maybe you could buy a single one, just to try.

I do have a hobby craft near me.

They do look lovely! I looked on their website and it seems they only have a set of 24 in stock though.

Amazon have bigger tins, I think.

My mum just got me the tin of 24 for an early birthday present Grin

I bought a few singles and a blending pencil, not that I know what to do with it.

Cool! Review please when you have had a chance to put them to the test Grin!

I just keep looking at the box.

I kind of don't want to open them incase I am disappointed!

My mum got her own book and cheaper pencils. I went with her so she could get her own book and when I was drooling over the pencils she said she would get them for me but I have to wait until my birthday! a few minutes later and she said I may as well have them now Grin

Just as well really as I did promise dh not to spend money on it until I know I am going to keep it up, and they are expensive. The boxes of 60 and 120 online look amazing but can't justify the price of them yet. I like that you can buy the singles as well if you want some colours but not the whole set of 60/120.

Ok, they are wonderful.

I like how you can get different shades. Press lightly for one shade and press harder gives a lovely deep colour. Very vibrant. Very soft to use and just a pleasure really.

I think I love them! I am kind of scared of using them too much as I can't easily afford to replace them Grin Hopefully they are long lasting.

Thanks Sultan

Phew!
I'm so relieved you like them. I very rarely recommend anything to anyone, but was confident about these. Although they feel quite soft, they don't seem to wear down quickly, which surprised me.

Happy colouring Smile

They really are lovely. I can't believe I am in love with colouring pencils. They just feel so lovely and the colours just pop.

Whataload That's a genius idea. I'll try it.

This colouring in malarkey is bringing out the child in me. I went for the enchanted forest book today but they didn't have any left, I felt like throwing a wobbly legged tantrum. "We can try somewhere else tomorrow when we're out" "But I want it now." Blush Grin
