Adult colouring in books

Am going to order the Animal Magic book from Amazon. It looks like it would be nicer to do with markers for brighter colours. These are recommended in the Amazon reviews. Are they worth it?

Thanks!

I've got Derwent ones in the Tin (jade colour tin)I find you have to press hard to get lots of colour
And then got Fabre (navy colour tin) and prefer these

Monkeyinshoes · 02/06/2015 21:51

I have the Art Therapy colouring book www.amazon.co.uk/Art-Therapy-Colouring-Book/dp/1782434437/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433278081&sr=8-1&keywords=art+therapy

It's really good. Nice thick pages so the colours don't bleed through. I've just been using the DC's felt tip pens at the moment. Want to get myself some nicer ones. Glad I've got my own book though. I find colouring so relaxing plus I think my DC are pleased I'm not nicking their colouring books (though, relaxing as it may be, there's only so many times I can colour Elsa before I get bored).

Loads of free prints on Pinterest if you don't want to fork out for the books.

I like the staedtler fineliners.

Cheesymonster · 02/06/2015 22:02

I want to try this but my eyesight isn't great and the books I've seen on Amazon look really intricate. Are there any with less complex pictures?

Sallystyle · 02/06/2015 22:06

I got the Animal Kingdom book and the Staedtler pencils.

I promised my husband I would stick with the cheaper pencils until I have been colouring for at least a month Grin I have a habit of picking up hobbies, spending stupid money on it and giving it up after a week.

Sallystyle · 02/06/2015 22:07

I think I would prefer pens but if they bleed through then there isn't much point in getting them I guess.

CrapBag · 02/06/2015 22:10

I use good old crayola pencils. They are really good and the colours are lovely.

I could do with some new adult colouring books, preferably flowers and patterns if anyone can recommend any please?

LadyBaelish · 02/06/2015 22:11

I've been tempted to get an adult colouring book for weeks, this thread has convinced me to do it! I'm strangely excited about getting started...feel like a kid again1

Sallystyle · 02/06/2015 22:18

Crap.

I just actually bought the fine liner pens as well.

Broke my promise!

must.not.buy.more.pens.....

my mom bought me a colouring book from tesco for my birthday Grin, its a partwork one, and I just bought a big pack of felt tips from home bargains with about 30 colours in, they also had some really nice papermate ones for £1.49, but dd got hold of them and now im missing some colours Sad

MrsMcGregor · 02/06/2015 22:35

U2 Grin! I'm like you, I would spend a small fortune on something and then decide a few weeks later that it's not for me.

Righto, given that you've all been shopping, I'm off to Amazon to order .... now!

Our WHSmith is awash with various colouring books for adults. I bought the one with the sort of things I'd like to colour (called 'relax with art' for £2.99) and a big pack of children's pencils (I'm colourblind so no point buying really fancy ones). I enjoy colouring in but have arthritis in my hands so it looks like a child has done it Grin

There are some there that are £8 or £9 but I didn't like the patterns (not much variety).

A lot of hospitals recommend these books as art therapy - I know the local mental health department which had a good art therapy group closed down and patients told to buy adult colouring books, likewise the pain clinic and palliative care. Seems rather demeaning to people who qualified as art therapists to me as surely there's more to it than buying a colouring in book and some pencils but maybe I'm over thinking.

Eek best hide the bank statement from DH! Ordered the book, colouring pencils and fineliners! Blush

I bought a dot to dot book for grown ups at the Natural History Museum last week. They're really detailed (1000 dot) patterns and it's very therapeutic. Totally recommend. Kids were quite impressed (which is rare).

Wagglebee · 03/06/2015 00:12

I got my book out tonight and started up again and have decided I need new pencils.

The Steadler ones I have are very good for blending as they're so soft and made for that purpose, but not very good for the Secret Garden pictures. Too intricate.

My Crayola pencils keep breaking when I sharpen them. Sad So I need news ones...

also realised my eyesight isn't as good as it was a few months ago

MrsMcGregor · 03/06/2015 07:25

I think I'll need a magnifying glass Grin .... even my glasses aren't the right strength just now!

I'm expecting my book people order with my own colouring books to arrive today! I love doodling and helping the DC with their pictures. But I find the bigger images tedious after a while. Something more intricate will suit me beautifully. I wish I were better at art full stop but these will have to do.

Wagglebee · 03/06/2015 13:13

Finding it harder than expected to find some new pencils.

I want a huge tin like I had as a child but they seem to be £££. Don't mind spending up to £30 say, but they're £60-150. Shock Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.

Anyone recommend good pencils for the intricate pictures?

Becca19962014 · 03/06/2015 13:59

Disclaimer: I'm colourblind!

wagglebee WHSmiths, well my nearest (small rural store) has a big pack of children's pencils with a good variety of colours (according to the list of colours on the side of the pack) which are about £10. I guess it depends on if you want ones you can blend really effectively.

Wagglebee · 03/06/2015 20:27

Becca Thank you Star Not to worried about blending. Now you say it I've a feeling my old giant tin might have been from there. (Or John Menzises.)

Wagglebee · 03/06/2015 20:27

*too

Becca19962014 · 03/06/2015 22:03

They're in a big plastic case, I think there were about 40 altogether - I definitely recommend them.

Iloveonionchutney · 03/06/2015 23:12

I've done it, ordered animal kingdom and a set of staedtler pencils, nothing overly exciting, just to see how I get on for now!
