Am going to order the Animal Magic book from Amazon. It looks like it would be nicer to do with markers for brighter colours. These are recommended in the Amazon reviews. Are they worth it?

Thanks!

Yeesh! those pics are amazing!

OwlAtEase · 03/07/2015 12:28

Train I'm telling myself they're photoshopped Grin

Sallystyle · 03/07/2015 12:32

It's the heat init? They aren't that good really, the sun is just blinding us a bit and making us think they are amazing. In reality they look like something a two year old done! Paha.

Wagglebee · 03/07/2015 15:44

It's the ones where they've added their own artwork to the white space that get me. Shock

SmileAndNod · 03/07/2015 15:55

I'm suffering with depression, anxiety and panic attacks and have been thinking about buying a colouring book and pencils. Trouble is, I'm not at arty at all!

I looked at a couple in town this morning and just felt intimidated and the very geometric designs gave me a headache.

Can anyone recommend anything good for a non - artistic beginner please? I was hoping that it would take my mind of a few things, that I could 'lose myself' as it were.

BlueEyeshadow · 03/07/2015 16:26

Would something like this be any good, Smile? I know what you mean about the geometric designs, they hurt my head too.

PollyannaWhittier · 03/07/2015 16:27

Smile I was in pretty much the same position as you, my first book was this one of mandalas - they don't need any imagination but aren't headache inducing like some designs

Wagglebee · 03/07/2015 17:24

Hi Smile Sorry you're having such a hard time. Flowers Colouring is a form of mindfulness so it could be helpful. Worth a try.

I'm not keen on the geometric designs as I think I'd get hung up on colour patterns. I prefer things with natural imagery like flowers, plants, animals, that kind of thing.

I don't have any specific suggestions sorry but if you look for those kinds of designs I think they'd be more relaxing.

SmileAndNod · 03/07/2015 18:52

Thanks. I like the look of that book and have it in my Amazon basket, along with an animal book. Now do I need pens, or pencils. I assume that the kids crayolas won't be any goodGrin

Sallystyle · 03/07/2015 19:18

I'm sorry you are struggling Smile :( I have bad anxiety as well right now.

My attempt at the frog loosely based on one of the pics linked in my post. Pahaha

Anxiety is an absolute bastard. Flowers

I think crayolas would be fine to get started right away. I prefer pencils because I like blending and there's no risk of them bleeding through. But lots of people on here have pens and they do look lovely. My pencils are Steadtler (sp?) ergo soft ones. Pack of 24 for about £10-15.

Wagglebee · 03/07/2015 19:22

I love your frog!

I suffer from bad anxiety too Smile, and I think colouring sends me into a kind of calm zone because it takes me out of my head while I'm just focused on the picture. I'm not artistic either, and it isn't really about how the picture looks at the end, it's just the soothing process of the actual colouring that is nice.

Maybe check out Enchanted Forest as it has a lot of lovely garden scenes and isn't too dark, heavy or geometric. You can also use either pens or pencils as it has lovely thick paper. You could get a small set of both and try them to see which you prefer. I thought I'd like pens better but it turns out I prefer pencils - I didn't know until I'd tried both.

Also, this thread is a lovely safe space filled with supportive people. You'll never be pressured to show your pictures here, you can just come and chat. I've found that very therapeutic too Smile

Just bought staedler fineliners on amazon as are on offer at the minute, down to £16. Already got the triangle shaped pencils but fancied fine liners for a bit of boldness. So what are you all storing your colouring stuff in, mines currently cluttering up the kitchen counter, I spend half my time retrieving various pencils and sharpeners from the kids and the rest worrying someone will spill something on my pride and joys lol

toastyarmadillo · 04/07/2015 05:56

Ooh thought of another question, gel pens, use to spend hours in lectures at uni carefully colouring in those print outs of lecture slides we were given (rather than annotate them, as I should have) has anyone found some good ones, I remember them being lovely and smooth to colour with.

cuphat · 04/07/2015 10:01

Hi all,

I've enjoyed looking at all of your lovely pictures. I've always enjoyed colouring in and I'm really pleased that it's now popular and I don't have to keep my love for it quite so secret any more!

I'm going to invest in some of the Polychromos pencils as I love the vibrancy of them, however I can't decide between 60 or 120! Those with either set: are you happy with your choice? Do you think 60 is enough or is 120 too many to deal with? I've looked at the colour charts and I think I'd want at least 10 extra pencils on top of the 60 set so I'm not sure if I should just go for the 120 (having nowhere proper to store the extra ones might annoy me too).

Tin sizes: is the 120 set much wider than the 60 set? I can't find proper measurements anywhere. I'm interested for storage purposes and in terms of how practical it will be to use them.

Now I just need to find some time from somewhere (I have a 2 year old and a 5 week old Grin).

eeyoredebbie · 04/07/2015 11:00

You can get gel pens from The Works and WH Smith

All the supermarkets, pound shops B&m etc have the, too, not sure on quality though

addictedtosugar · 04/07/2015 12:09

Smiles. I'm in no way artistic, but have been colouring these pics with these pencils, and am impressed with book, pencils and my apparent skill from the designs. Will scan one day n for you went I'm on the computer. Xxx
