Am going to order the Animal Magic book from Amazon. It looks like it would be nicer to do with markers for brighter colours. These are recommended in the Amazon reviews. Are they worth it?

Thanks!

Pencils are difficult! I had yet another amazon parcel waiting for me when I got home from work last night. And I actually went "to bed" at 8pm so I could colour in Grin

Trying out pencils has made me realise just how good the pictures being shared on here are! My work in progress is dull by comparison, but so therapeutic.

My latest. Not an easy one to photograph. I'm crying into my colouring book because I don't have lovely pencils to do impressive shading and blending! I keep slipping them into conversation with DH: "what would you like for tea? I was thinking pizza and some expensive pencils." I'm sure that'll work eventually!

Oh Plonky look at all your lovely shading!

"I'll do a more subtle one and you can do a heavy handed one and we can compare later. Be prepared to have a dent in your thumb from pushing really hard!"
I'll be going for the shine (those polychromos have a waxy sheen when used hard don't they), but not sure if colouring after a liquid lunch would be the best idea I've ever had Grin

"I was thinking pizza and some expensive pencils"
LOL, keep up the "subliminal" messages OwlWink. BTW, what's your colouring book?

Nice work Plonky and Owl Smile

OwlAtEase · 19/06/2015 15:15

Colouring book is Enchanted Forest, which is lovely, I highly recommend it Smile. The fineliner pens don't bleed at all. But I only have 20 colours, which, like I tell DH, is a very sad fraction of a rainbow.

We did end up having pizza, by the way. No pencils, though.

Yet.

Am loving this thread and look forward to my colouring late at night when all is quiet!!Lovely work on above pictures .I am working from those Zen colouing books at the moment but the books listed above seem cool:)

Wagglebee · 19/06/2015 16:19

Owl that's the one I'm working through. I love it. Your pic is really good. I like the bold colours.

Sallystyle · 19/06/2015 19:46

You guys are just too good!!!

littlemonkey2013 · 19/06/2015 21:09

Oops I bought pens...
While I like the intense colour instantly with the lends, I like the depth with the pencils, even if it does give more hand strain.
I think I will continue with both

Any recommendations for good pens on a par with the Polychromos pencils?

Plonkysaurus · 19/06/2015 21:19

Love those colours littlemonkey

I love that I've found something to do that is de-stressing. Had a horrible day withnan overtired teething toddler, but I was able to go and finish my balloon after dinner and now I feel ready for sleep. Lovely!

It's very good for anxiety, worrying etc. Suppose that's why there's some marketed as mindfulness. I'm really enjoying it.

eeyoredebbie · 19/06/2015 21:49

I can recommend staedler fine liners and felts.

Sharpies are good but not for detailed work and they bleed through so one sided pictures only.

Gel pens are great, I've got cheapy The works ones but Sakura gelly rolls have been recommended to me.

I also have 30 WH smith felts which are pretty good.

I've heard good things about papermate flairs, staedler Norris club, Faber castell, Berol and crayola super tips but not used any of those

eeyoredebbie · 19/06/2015 21:56

In the upper price range for markers there are Letraset Promarkers and Copics

Again not used them bug heard good things and seen some brilliant pics, one done with Copics looked good enough to be a magazine cover!

OwlAtEase · 20/06/2015 02:13

Waggle I'd love to see a photo of one of yours! Which one are you working on at the moment? I'm trying to choose my next picture.

Lily, from what I've read most people seem to recommend the Staedtler fineliners.

littlemonkey that's lovely, I agree with you about the depth of pencils vs the intensity of pens. I'd love to try a combination of them in the same picture but I'd probably mess it up!

Wagglebee · 20/06/2015 05:15

Owl I just finished the one with the castle in the centre with dragons and a sword. It's towards the front if the book. I'm trying to choose between the pond picture or the one you've done.
Do you think they look more difficult the further in you go? Some of the back ones are really detailed.

ShoopShoop · 20/06/2015 08:21

Morning fellow colourers!

I bought 30 staedtler fineliners last night on Amazon and can't wait for them to arrive. The vibrancy of your picture Eeyore looks fab with the fineliners.

I've gone down with awful laryngitis so am feeling very sorry for myself. Waaaahhhhh!!

I started one of the secret garden pictures too. Will post a WIP picture later.

timeforabrewnow · 20/06/2015 09:03

Very happy to have this thread! I have the enchanted forest book and love it.

I've seen some amazing versions of the pics in my book online, and wonder if there is a special method for background shading when there is lots of detailed leaves etc in the foreground (as it were)?

A bit of a technical question, but I feel sure some arty mums netter will know the answer. I suspect it's something to do with blending.....

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 20/06/2015 10:01

"Any recommendations for good pens on a par with the Polychromos pencils?"
The Crayola Supertips are pretty good. I have the pack of 50 and it's a great selection of colours, plus you can colour fine or broader areas due to the shape of the tip. They bleed slightly but not a problem with a sheet of paper underneath. They'd be no good for double sided pictures though.

I like how you've used analogous colours littlemonkey, it's really effective. Wow Plonky, great shading! Love the colours too.

"I love that I've found something to do that is de-stressing."
Me too. I've tried things like meditation but find it very hard to quieten my brain unless I'm occupied on something else. This is absolutely ideal.

Here's a . She talks about blending using paint thinners for the first 3 minutes but then shows how to use pencils.

Arcticbunny · 20/06/2015 10:21

So inspired by this thread!! What a talented bunch you are! I used to be so arty pre DC...
I bought Zen colouring a couple of months back and have been enjoying a few sessions with some cheap WHSmith pencils from the DCs stash and have had ok results.
After recommendations on here my Staedtler fine liners have just arrived and my Secret Garden book. But I'm soooo disappointed. The pages are a cream colour not white. Has anyone else found this? Is it cheaper quality and do the colours bleed through the paper? I was looking forward to a quiet evening without DH indulging in my new goodies!

OwlAtEase · 20/06/2015 11:22

Waggle I love the pond picture. They do get more detailed further in, I think!

Arctic yes, the fineliners bleed through the paper in the Secret Garden book. The paper in Enchanted Forest (Johanna Basford's second book) is much thicker and white, and doesn't bleed. I would stick with pencils for Secret Garden, unfortunately.

Shoop I hope you feel better soon!

Arcticbunny · 20/06/2015 12:08

Thanks Owl. I feel some more purchases are absolutely necessary then Wink
