Am going to order the Animal Magic book from Amazon. It looks like it would be nicer to do with markers for brighter colours. These are recommended in the Amazon reviews. Are they worth it?

Thanks!

Hi, I've been thinking of having a go at some colouring for some time, and this thread has spurred me on. So this afternoon I downloaded a free picture from The Secret Garden book, and because I have a huge box of watercolour pencils I thought I'd have a go.
Well.......that put things back a bit! I didn't hear the breadmaker ping with the pizza dough (too engrossed obviously!) and then I didn't hear the oven ping either once the pizza was in! So rather a late and overdone dinner tonight and it's all the fault of colouring!
Enjoyed this afternoon though Grin

Oh my, you lot are good! Lemon I loved your jar upthread, you really got a good glass effect there and Gerald is pretty cool too! The drawings look pretty intricate. Binary cool comic and more super shading. I really need some shading and blending tips if anyone has any to share please.

Hi to all you new people ... it's lovely to have such a nice thread sharing what we're up to. I never imagined it would go beyond a few posts when I started it!

So, all you colourers... I am planning on quitting smoking, and I have a trip to Australia coming up... Never arty or a colourer as a kid, is it worth investing for a time killer/craving buster do you reckon? Thanks!!

thatstoast · 13/06/2015 22:22

I've just bought secret garden and some pencils. It's a fun way to spend an evening. Although after 90 minute, I'm already thinking that I need more pencils. I think I might make a trip to the works.

girliefriend · 13/06/2015 22:24

Hi all, I have fancied trying this out for a while Grin can you recommend a good 'starter' colouring book? I like the look of the Animal Kingdom one but wondering if its a bit advanced for me Blush

Sallystyle · 13/06/2015 22:36

Thankfully I have an artist in the house who will also use them.

Although he prefers working with oil stuff.

I just found a youtube video on colouring tips. It is long so I will watch it tomorrow Grin

Blending

OK, for example in the mans trousers.

They're actually colored with about five different colours.

Base layer light yellow/cream
Then built up with a darker yellow/light brown
Then with a brown on top.

You kinda have to not worry about filling in all the white, became the layers should get them all.

shading
The shading is built at the same time. I kinda do the 'bottom' edge with a harder push in the same colours, then a light push of the next darkest.

Generally if you go for the edges for shading you'll be fine, just build it up bit by bit... Don't push too hard unless you want a crisp colour.

shadowing
Different in my mind to shading. Shading is for 3-d and showing light, shadowing is for lack of light... Kinda

I use browns greys and Black's for shadowing. So you'll see that the monster on the right crawling on to the boat, the hind leg was blended and shaded the same way as the others, then I did a light black 'wash' over the top to put it in shadow.

Hope that explains it... Its difficult to put into words!

girlie I would print out a few different types from the internet first.

Google image search things like
Adult colouring
Doodle invasion
Colouring for mindfulness

That will give you a bazillion different pictures print out a few you like the look of and go from there :)

I discovered that whilst they're pretty and all that, I don't really like doing the abstract or mancala stuff that much and it cost me a sheet of paper!

So if you do that you'll find what you like and then should be able to get a book to suit you.

Any old pencils will do to start, raid your kids pencils cases :)

Found a journal style small grown up colouring book at WHSmith in Manchester airport. Fits on the lap tray .

Sallystyle · 14/06/2015 10:16

I think you need to record yourself doing all that Binary so we can get a better idea!
