How much have you stashed?

MasterFlea · 13/08/2013 15:04

My stashes are getting very big. I'm trying to use up some of it but still feel the URGE to add to the woolly stash.

I've currently got two big plastic boxes full of fabric and an archive box bursting with yarn.

What is yours like? Do you see it as a problem or love it?

I don't know if you've ever seen the house in Scotland in Grand Designs, which was split level but living upstairs at ground level, falling down to bedrooms lower down at the back and near a set of old kilns - I think she was a cookery writer and they had a grand piano in the room at the end of the hall.

I have redesigned that house umpteen times in my head, and used most of it similar enough to how it was, but on the left of the front door and facing out over the view of the valley and far off hills, I have a craft room with fabric and wool bins easily accessible, peg boards on the walls for ribbons and threads, jars of buttons screwed under the shelves, which are holding my books, another pegboard with my tools hanging on it (with the shapes drawn around them so I can see what has been "borrowed"!), and 2 large architects' drawing tables on trestles that can be flat for cutting and sewing on, or on a slant for cardmaking and painting and drawing. With a dressmakers' dummy (a nice old fashioned one) sitting in the corner. And lots of both natural light and good light for night-time efforts. Painted white. And with a noticeboard to pin up my ideas and current plans too.

It would be better than dragging my sewing machine down from study to work on the kitchen table, and then clearing everything up again so people can eat etc. So there's usually no point as I have so little time I get about 10 minutes actual work done for all the clearing and preparing time taken. And NO project only takes 10 minutes....

I'm definitely a member of the SABLE club Blush
Got four big bin liners stuffed with yarn, sorted in carrier bags inside the bin liners, plus three big plastic crates & several old canvas shopping bags all fool of wool. I already had knitting needles, more than a pair each, in just about every size made before I inherited my mum & MiL's collections as well. It's all taking over the spare room.

Doesn't help that my favourite trip out these days is a drive to a craft barn that always has great bargains....and it would be criminal to come home empty handed, wouldn't it?

Aquelven · 15/08/2013 11:06

Full of wool Blush though fool of wool is probably a more apt description.

At the end of last term one of my pupils have me the most amazing gift. A huuuuuuuuge tin of buttons.
She knew about my button obsession as during art and crft lessons I have been known to get very excited about buttons and ribbons and her nan had asked her to pass these on to me as no one in the family wanted them.

I'm still sorting through them, they are amazing, lots of beautiful used buttons as well as new ones still on crds prized at 2 and a half pence.

ParkerTheThief · 15/08/2013 11:35

Priced, not prized. Although I do prize them

MasterFlea · 15/08/2013 12:00

Envy at your button gift Parker

Biddy you need a place for your machine. The house in Scotland should stop being so selfish and hand itself over to you. Such plans...

I bought a vintage tin of buttons on ebay, plus two more bags of old buttons, to create an instant button collection - that is shameful, isn't it? In my defence, I will say that I have used buttons from the tin - as the centre for crocheted flower brooches, and even, once, to mend ds3's jeans.

Any of you are welcome to come and visit my yarn stash - let me know when you will be arriving, ArtisanLentilWeaver, and I will make a cake too.

JollyHappyGiant · 15/08/2013 13:28

Cake! See you in a few hours Grin

JollyHappyGiant · 15/08/2013 14:25

Deramores is doing 15% off stylecraft with code STYLE15

I will not fill my shopping basket.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/08/2013 14:35

Neither will I. Honestly.

Oh, who am I kidding - stylecraft, here I come!

JollyHappyGiant · 15/08/2013 14:46

I've got £27 worth in my basket. 16 balls. I'm not actually going to buy it though. Oh no.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/08/2013 14:51

I managed to limit myself to £5 through superhuman restraint. I am gathering colours to use in the Attic24 christmas wreath that I am longing to make.

GemmaTeller · 15/08/2013 15:01

omg, that wreath is fab, I need it!.....

.....so will have to go to Black Sheep Wools.......

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/08/2013 15:07

No, no, no - go to Deramores. 15% off stylecraft yarns, that come in the most lovely colours - many of them perfect for the wreath. I use just the stylecraft special dk range - £1.99 for 100g - and that is before the discount!

TheWoollybacksWife · 15/08/2013 15:19

I think we should set up an oddments exchange program.

When I have finished my 2 blankets I will have bits and bobs of various colours floating around. They are yours SDTG if you need them for your wreath. I had an issue earlier in the year where I needed a small amount of a particular colour to finish a Woolly Hug. The lovely SoupDragon helped me out on that occasion so I'd just be spreading the MN Woolly luuurve.

SoupDragon · 15/08/2013 15:20

TheWoollybacksWife · 15/08/2013 15:23

Spooky Soupy Grin

MasterFlea · 15/08/2013 15:25

I've been pondering about getting some Stylecraft. Heard such good things about it on here. Now that has put the nail in the coffin. Don't know what I'll do with it though.

What's an oddment though? A full ball or a bit of a ball.

I started a basket today with some leftovers, (or would that be where I use 'Oddments'?).

Where to stash the next load that I'm buying... Maybe I need a wreath too?

OP posts:
TheWoollybacksWife · 15/08/2013 15:45

It's what I call leftovers. Doing projects with lots of colour changes uses up some really quite small odds and ends although I think I used to be far more ruthless about what was kept and what was binned. Shock When I was young and naive I didn't keep anything that wasn't enough to make a child's hat out of. Now I have bags full of stuff that's only long enough to do one round of a small granny square. Grin

MasterFlea · 15/08/2013 15:45

NOOOOOOOO!

All the stylecraft special DK is 'Out of Stock'.

OP posts:
Mhw02 · 15/08/2013 15:46

Masterflea, when I say oddments I mean leftovers. I am currently working on a big stripy blanket in stylecraft and have 8 little balls of probably 5g each which I'm referring to as "oddments". I assume when other people use the term they mean the same as me, but one can never be sure...

Woolwarehouse, by the way, sell Stylecraft for £1.69 a ball. Free postage over £25, and when I ordered from them they also sent me free darning needles Grin. They say it's a special offer, but it's been that price for ages.

ParkerTheThief · 15/08/2013 15:46

I started a multicoloured blanket yesterday with the intention of using up my oddments - I then made a list of all the oddments I was about to finish so I could order replacement balls. I think I'm a lost cause.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/08/2013 15:50

Ohhh that would be lovely of you, TheWoollyBacksWife - I will send you a little something in return.

No - you are not a lost cause. Parker - you are a dedicated supporter of yarn manufacturers - we all are!

ParkerTheThief · 15/08/2013 15:52

SDTG, it sounds so much better when you put it like that.
