How much have you stashed?

MasterFlea · 13/08/2013 15:04

My stashes are getting very big. I'm trying to use up some of it but still feel the URGE to add to the woolly stash.

I've currently got two big plastic boxes full of fabric and an archive box bursting with yarn.

What is yours like? Do you see it as a problem or love it?

My wool stash is huge - I have enough to keep me going for at least two years, maybe more. I always vow I am going to use it up before I buy any more, but then I see some I like or some that is a bargain and I just can't resist it. I also have a rather large button 'stash' if that is the right word for a collection of buttons. I love having loads in reserve.

I think I need help Grin .

JollyHappyGiant · 14/08/2013 06:46

Not too much. I have a drawer under my bed plus my WIPs in a bag. I'm working on some projects to reduce my stash at the moment. I have a few balls of Stylecraft Special DK that I don't like the colour of so I'm trying to use those up. I also have not quite 12 balls of different colours of snuggly baby bamboo and I'm trying to think of something special to do with them.

RubyGoat · 14/08/2013 06:51

I have a massive yarn stash, probably about 20 carrier bags full at least. Blush But, I don't really collect anything else. Except cook books (they are a joint collection between DH & I though). DH is a horrendous hoarder.

SoupDragon · 14/08/2013 08:48

None.

None at all.

For a moment I was Shock, Soup. Grin

I like having a bit tucked away so that I can start a project without having to go shopping but I just can't seem to resist buying more anyway. Like Monikar I love a bargain.

Envious of your stash Lego. Where do you hide store it all?

I'm going to use up something from the yarn box today.

I have two of those sets of little chest-of-drawers with wicker drawers - both full of yarn, plus a hat box full, a carrier bag full, my knitting bag is pretty full, and I have another couple of carrier bagfuls squirrelled away elsewhere.

I thought I had three skirt-lengths of fabric waiting to be made up, but when I was looking for a dress I wanted to alter, I found two more lengths of fabric as well. And I have some cushion fabric waiting to be made up, a bag full of quilting fabric I have been given, three bagfuls of felting supplies, and my latest acquisition - a drop spindle and a bag full of merino tops to try spinning with.

I have a problem. I have to buy yarn. And craft supplies - I have one of those sets of plastic drawers full of painting and paper craft stuff.

It looks pretty bad, listed like that. But I feel I am among friends here and you will not Judge me!

SoupDragon · 14/08/2013 12:09

I have a large amount of Stylecraft in many colours.
I have a large amount of Drops Cotton Light in every many colours
I have a blankets worth of Cashmerino Silk Aran for a blanket.
I have a stock of Baby Bamboo
I have a large box of "yarn bombing yarn" which is miscellaneous odds and sods from charity/car boot sales.
I have 2 baby blankets worth of Patons Smoothie.
I have a blanket's worth of Rico Creative Cotton aran.
I have a blankets worth (in progress) of Baby Cotton Kapok
I have a large amount of Drops Eskimo for felting.
I have 2 skeins of Drops Lace for a shawl
I have a large plastic box of sundry yarn.
I have fabric galore.

And that is just off the top of my head.

I don't feel quite so bad now I know I am not alone.

I read on another forum about a lady who had so much yarn that she had to hide it from her DH by stowing it away in their suitcases, which she knew he wouldn't look in! I am quite open about my addiction Grin .

SunnyL · 14/08/2013 12:36

I only bought a sewing machine 18mths ago but my fabric pile is growing to epic proportions. The trouble is i work overseas regularly so seek out fabric shops wherever i am as they always have fab designs. Kanga fabric in kenya, sari fabric in Sri Lanka etc.

Also lots of peope have been having clear out and have been giving me all their fabric.

Just need to persuade DH to not open the wardrobe in the spare room.....tum tee tum.....nothing to see here.....

PurpleFrog · 14/08/2013 12:39

My stash goes back decades. Blush Around Easter time I purchased a number of large lidded plastic boxes so I could stack them at one end of the floored area of our loft. I ran out of boxes before I emptied all the binbags!

I intend to buy a few more boxes, but really need to start using up some of my stash. I have both fabric and yarn. Sigh!

Mhw02 · 14/08/2013 12:42

Okay, have just tipped everything out and counted it. My stash runs thus:

  1. Oddments of 10 colours of Stylecraft Special DK (in the middle of a blanket - just about run out, need to order more).
  1. Five other balls of Stylecraft Special DK, all slightly used, plus one other miscellaneous ball which I think is Stylecraft Special DK, but I can't be sure!
  1. One ball of Stylecraft Wondersoft Merry-go-round
  1. Ten balls of Rowan Amy Butler Organic Belle in various colours (set aside for a blanket which must be finished by December)
  1. Eight balls of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK in various colours (have been stockpiling as it's on special offer)
  1. Four balls of Rowan Pure Wool DK
  1. Two balls of Rowan Pure Wool 4 ply (half way though blanket)
  1. One ball of James C Brett Pure Merino (slightly used), plus some tiny 5g - 10g balls of leftovers of a couple of other colours
  1. Two balls of Sirdar Baby Bamboo (for blanket - need to order LOADS more)
  1. Three balls of Rico baby DK (half way through blanket)

  2. A couple of balls of some random baby acrylic which I don't actually like very much

  3. Oddments of James C Brett with merino in four colours.

Plus some fat quarters for patchwork, and an awkward bit of fleece that's just a fraction too small for a Little Hug.

Kikibee · 14/08/2013 12:46

I think I need to join your club Grin

I have loads of wool, I always tell myself that I don't need anymore but the urge is just too great! I have boxes and boxes of material, the kids discovered sewing the other day, I had to leave the room whilst they rifled through everything :(

And as for cookery books......... Blush

PurpleFrog · 14/08/2013 12:46

If you can list every item in your stash you definitely do not have a problem!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/08/2013 12:49

I did make a list of my yarn stash once - I hoped that, if I knew what I had, I might get around to finding projects to do with it. >

PurpleFrog · 14/08/2013 13:03

Well, actually, I did an Excel spreadsheet of my yarn a couple of years ago - anything that had at least one 50g ball. Blush I sold a couple of packs that I had gone off on eBay and I started using up some of the long-term inmates of my stash. At one point I vowed not to buy any more yarn unless it was needed for a project to use up some of the stash. I did quite well last year and managed to use up things for various Woolly Hugs projects.

However, my resolve has now totally gone out of the window and my spreadsheet is very out of date!

Mhw02 · 14/08/2013 13:10

Purplefrog, sigh, I knew I was still an amateur at this! Grin

I have one of <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?q=expedit+shelf&safe=active&sa=X&rls=com.microsoft:en-ie:IE-Address&biw=1280&bih=799&tbm=isch&tbnid=lAlq78ncYS9XFM:&imgrefurl=www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70103085/&docid=hCeMJ12uk9_HcM&imgurl=www.ikea.com/us/en/images/products/expedit-shelving-unit__0092712_PE229410_S4.JPG&w=500&h=500&ei=HnYLUrTDHoWO7Qbm1oD4Dg&zoom=1&iact=rc&page=1&tbnh=134&tbnw=126&start=0&ndsp=39&ved=1t:429,r:31,s:0,i:179&tx=94&ty=84" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">these full of fabric in the corner of the bedroom.

I reckon I could fill another with bags of fabric, canvases, paint, wool & other shite in different cupboards round the house.

Bought 5 packs of vacuum storage bags from IKEA last weekend and am planning on trying to get EVERYTHING into them (anything that won't fit is to be binned or charity shopped)

Eeek!

monikar · 14/08/2013 13:38

Purple the spreadsheet made my laugh Grin .

I have been known to be so pleased with a purchase of yarn to actually sniff it Blush .

PurpleFrog · 14/08/2013 14:30

I prefer to fondle yarn rather than sniff it!

Its funny how your taste in yarn changes as you get older, and also how yarn itself has also changed over the past 30-40 years. Cheap yarn is not half as nasty as it used to be.

I am a lifelong knitter, except for a couple of periods when I was obsessed with cross-stitch where I didn't knit anything for a few years. However, I only started to crochet properly around 3 years ago and I have suddenly found a use for some yarn bargains that were stashed because they were too stiff to wear!

GemmaTeller · 14/08/2013 14:37

I have two of these Ikea storage systems full of wool, fabric, fleece, buttons, fabric, ribbon, card making crap, glue, fabric, wood shapes, reels of cotton, fabric, beads, half made projects.

Good news is I've my own sewing room to keep it in Grin

'Whats all these clothes over the back of this chair?' says DH 'Stuff I'm going to alter' says I.....someday.....one day.....eventually

Sometimes I just like having a look through it all.

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 14/08/2013 14:56

to be technical, I have shitloads.

about 10 skeins wollmeise sock wool plus 800g of dk and two lace.
sweater quantities of patons wool blend dk, and cashmerino.

plus everything else
about seven large vacuum bags.
have you heard of SABLE?
Stash acquired beyond life expectancy.
I'm there. Just need to live to 200yo

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 14/08/2013 14:57

I like buying wool at least as much as I like knittingGrin

SoupDragon · 14/08/2013 15:08

I like buying yarn from car boot sales/charity shops as I feel it has been abandoned and needs a good home.
