How much have you stashed?

MasterFlea · 13/08/2013 15:04

My stashes are getting very big. I'm trying to use up some of it but still feel the URGE to add to the woolly stash.

I've currently got two big plastic boxes full of fabric and an archive box bursting with yarn.

What is yours like? Do you see it as a problem or love it?

Laughing at SABLE , too true Grin

I have three big placcy boxes of fabric, another purely of fleece, one old-style-tv-sized boxes of clothes I can cut up and make things out of, two large shoe boxes of well-organised buttons, one of ribbon. Various shoeboxes of: elastic, funky shoelaces, wonderweb, velcro blah blah blah.

It all lives under the stairs and frightens DH if he opens the door - like there's room for any of his stuff in there? Ha! Poor deluded man!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/08/2013 16:02

I had forgotten the 40+ balls from the Knit Now magazine yarn stash I won a couple of months back. I won 66 balls, and have already given away 24 balls.

LadyBigtoes · 14/08/2013 16:07

Oh gawd, it's huge. Probably 5-6 large boxes of fabric, several smaller boxes of fat quarters, one big woolly box for my crochet moments, plus additional boxes of things like elastic, trimmings and buttons.

The trouble is I add to the stash while having very little time to sew - however this is improving as the DC get older and I do really love exploring through my stash to discover things and make plans for them. What I would really like is a special sewing room where I could store the whole stash in a clearly visible, easy-to-access display with space to leave projects out instead of putting them away half-done.

ParkerTheThief · 14/08/2013 16:44

Stylecraft in 33 colours
Debbie Bliss Alpaca in three colours to make a cowl or shawl with
Lots of baby bamboo
Some 4ply bamboo yarn that makes lovely things but is a bugger to crochet
Lots of small bits of sublime DK left over from a spotty blanket
Some Manos del Uraguay lace yarn
Some Peter Pan DK in three colours that I was making a blanket with but I don't love it so I ignore it.
A whole drawer of odds and ends yarn
Boxes of ribbons
Piles of fabric stash
A whole room of scrapbook ing and card making stuff from my pre crochet days

Ladybigtoes - I have a dream of the perfect craft room that I will have when I win the lottery and build my perfect house.

There is enough storage for all my craft materials, shelves for all my books (both with room for growth). There's a big table for cutting-out, sewing, painting, felting, and paper craft etc, a desk with a computer and printer, so,I can take a break from crafting to MN, and so I can nip onto Ravelry or watch YouTube tutorials. There's also a comfortable seating area, where I can sit and knit or do hand sewing and watch TV - and there's a wood burning stove, for ultimate cosiness.

Just outside the door, there is a small kitchenette so I can get drinks/snacks easily, and there's a little shower and loo. Frankly, I would almost never need to set foot in the rest of the house!

SoupDragon · 14/08/2013 17:00

I have a dream of the perfect craft room

I think basically, we're talking of a TARDIS aren't we?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/08/2013 17:23

A craft room that travels in time and space!. I want it and I want it now, SoupDragon!! Grin

monikar · 14/08/2013 17:39

I dream of a craft room too - mine is mostly wool though, with those open shelves like open boxes you get in wool shops.

Weegiemum · 14/08/2013 17:46

I have glass and silk (I paint them!)

I stopped painting about 18 months ago when I got a neurological prob that affected my hands.

I didn't stop buying though, I now have 7 large baskets full of glass, 50 plain white scarves and 25 plain ties.

My hands are doing good so I'm about to start painting again. Before my house is overtaken!!

MasterFlea · 14/08/2013 19:15

A craft room is a dream of mine too. I have a sewing table in the 3rd bedroom but planning dc3 so if that happens then my sewing room is gone. Until they all move out.

My stash is all over the place. Some finished objects in the wardrobe awaiting Xmas and babies to be born. Some in the living room, spare bedroom. Would the Tardis be big enough though?

SABLE is a great aim.

And I'd love to try silk painting. They always look so beautiful.

I have the yarn to finish the blanket I'm working on currently. This will leave me with oddments that I have to add to so I can make something useful Grin It would be criminal to leave oddments unused.

I have a stash of yarn to make hats for DS and 3 nephews, 3 great nephews and 2 great nieces for the winter.

Plus yarn to make cardigans for at least half a dozen babies (as yet unborn).

Plus a set of plastic drawers full of card/paper/rubber stamps etc.

And another set of drawers full of fabric, embroidery thread and random balls of wool donated by my mum.

I "rescued" a shirt that DH was throwing out at the weekend as it was only worn on the collar. I have plans to make something from the lovely thick cotton fabric - most likely a peg bag.

I tend to lay out my stash and then either get out my pattern books or browse Ravelry. This results in no knitting or crochet, just lots of wool stroking, project stashing and generally staring off into the far distance while imagining my family wearing matching hand knitted sweaters on long country walks then coming home to snuggle under hand crocheted throws etc etc Blush

HoggyTruffle · 14/08/2013 20:38

How much have you stashed?

NEVER enough.

I was going to suggest driving to a lay by for a meet up to compare stashes but it may be difficult to explain to the local constabulary - "she was only stroking my 4ply officer" Blush.

monikar · 14/08/2013 21:10

We would all have to hire removal vans Grin .

GemmaTeller · 14/08/2013 21:16

DH keeps wandering in my craft room muttering about what I'm getting rid off if we move next year..

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

ParkerTheThief · 14/08/2013 22:24

DH came upstairs to my craft room this morning with a parcel muttering more yarn
It wasn't, it was clothes, but it is true that nearly every package that arrives here is yarn.

weegiemum, yoube just reminded me that I've got loads of silk painting stuff as well. If its raining tomorrow I might get it out.

SoupDragon · 15/08/2013 07:16

I used to have a craft room... then I had a third child instead. When she has yet another full blown Diva tantrum I wonder if the trade was worth it :o

I didn't know we were meant to include other craft stashes. I am ignoring my paper craft stash - for the purposes of this thread it doesn't exist.

ArtisanLentilWeaver · 15/08/2013 07:22

Ooh, I want to come and see everyone's stashes! Grin

I bought something on Gumtree and the lady selling had a craft shed. More like a huge craft chalet. Envy
It had enormous windows and a million boxes all tidily stacked and labelled plus a wood burning stove.

My stash is a million few tesco bags which fall out of wardrobes or sit under the table. I swear they breed when I'm not looking.

JollyHappyGiant · 15/08/2013 07:25

I wish mine would breed. It would save me starting something then discovering that the yarn was discontinued and having to rake the internet and little, independent shops in order to find one more ball.

PurpleFrog · 15/08/2013 08:46

Careful with Tesco bags - I have a loft and spare room full of confetti where bio-degradeable Tesco bags have disintegrated! The first ones were not obviously so and were not marked with an expiry date. Sad

ArtisanLentilWeaver · 15/08/2013 09:05

The desperate question. Do you ever haul the stash out and just admire it like Gollum does with the Ring just before he is fried in the Cracks of Doom?

My stash is yarn, material, bits of ribbon/trimming and buttons. sounds very neat and tidy written down. Of course, when I need a button, I go and buy a new one rather than crack the stash. Blush

ParkerTheThief · 15/08/2013 09:41

I admire mine gollumly. Sometimes I stroke it. Sometimes I rearrange it.

I'm loathe to use the really really lovely stuff. Thisnis why I have some beautiful scrapbook papers that I can't bear to cut or cover with anything and lovely skeins of yarn uncrocheted.

SoupDragon · 15/08/2013 09:53

[precioussss]

SoupDragon · 15/08/2013 09:54

I do use my button stash though and I have a lot to sort through what with having my own button tin plus my childhood button tin and one I bought from a boot sale. I love sorting through for the perfect button and feel it is good for them to be put to use again.

BiddyPop · 15/08/2013 10:36

I am afraid to look at my stashes.

I have a large plastic crate, a big carrier bag and a few loose balls lying around of wool. (and possibly more in other places). I keep the crate in the storage unit (out of DH's sight).

I have 2 large plastic crates, a carrier bag, and a large pile in the study (WIPs or at least things with plans for them) of fabric. (The 2 crates and the carrier bag are in a storage cupboard in the attic, out of DH's sight).

I have a large plastic crate filled with ribbons, buttons, beads, velcro etc, and a large plastic bag of "toy stuffing".

Then I have a bookcase which has 2 shelves dedicated to my card making stuff (papers etc) and 2 much smaller plastic tubs with stamps, embellishments, stickers, glue, glitter etc. And a file box of small pieces of paper and card from previous cards, the oddments that I will use in other projects.

And then a large, (underbed blanket box style) plastic box filled with wrapping things (tissue paper, bubble wrap, gift bags, ribbons, tags etc) and a strong gift bag holding my rolls of wrapping paper (maybe 10 different rolls - between Christmas wrap I bought cheap in Jan, leftovers from last Christmas, a couple of rolls of birthday and ordinary wrap to suit boys or girls or adults, and 2 rolls of individual sheets of naice wrapping paper I got cheap in a closing down sale).

(And I know there is a stash of things downstairs too for cake making and decorating and chocolate making - but that is a LOT smaller).

I love being crafty, but I haven't HAD time in the past few years as work and home have been too hectic - and I really have tried not to add (much) to the stashes in that time. But I need to use up a lot before I get anymore. (And most of them were bought with specific projects in mind).

MasterFlea · 15/08/2013 10:39

I remember going through my aunt's button stash when I was a young'un. I had to beg and plead for one button to take home with me. Her stash was in a big container that was used for sweets. And it was full. She probably still misses the one she gave to me.

My button stash is pitiful. A vitamin bottle that has about 10 buttons at the bottom.

What are oddments? I'm still new to all this, hence my worry about accumulating a stash when I only took up crocheting in January.
