Butterfly, one way you could try is use a slightly bigger hook for your starting chain before switching to the 'right' size for the next row.

SocialButterfly · 01/09/2012 22:12

Thanks ladies, I've had another go and still totally kack handed but I'm persevering! My friend is coming found tomorrow and we are going to practice togrher.
I'll report back Grin

pantryboy the debbie bliss prima is lovely - although on some stitches I have to be careful that I pull through fully as the strands separate. I've done a few experiments with squares and decided that the wool doesn't seem to need much pattern so I'm going for this with my squares in the dark green, light green and aubergine and the centres/edges in stone

As a relative newbie, I'd second the tip about using larger hooks when your learning, and do lots of practice with plain small squares in a single stitch and single colour wool. That way you can 'see' what the regular stitches like double crochet and treble crochet should like and see if you can get your tension and stitch sizes consistent before attempting patterns. Then when you've cracked that start messing around with patterns - start simple and work your way up into fancy patterns.

My first 'thing' was a cushion cover (for one side of a cushion) from 9 granny squares, I see it every day and smile!
My other tip is to make things that you actually would want to use or give someone, rather than random things (does anyone use those wristwarmers that seem to be in every beginner crochet book???)

Morning all Brew I'm having a rest and laundry day after 3 days in a tent (much fun at 6m pg Hmm)

SocialButterfly, I'm probably a bit late to be useful but you have a Hook Hand and a Wool Hand - right handers hold the hook in their right hand. Once you master the art of holding both wool and work in your Wool Hand, it should all fall into place. Working into a foundation chain is definitely the hardest bit to do, it might be worth looking for a tutorial for Foundation Double Crochet (or whichever stitch you're using)?

TheWoollybacksWife · 03/09/2012 11:25

Are any of you interested in this Smile

Seabright · 04/09/2012 13:49

Hello! Another new crocheted here. I did a one day course, but didn't practice enough and forgot stuff. With a combination of a book at the Planet Purl tutorials on YouTube, I'm doing OK now.

I've almost finished a Granny Square cushion cover, but DP hates the colours, so have let him choose the colours for the next project - a poncho for DD.

PurplePidjin · 04/09/2012 14:09

Welcome to the club, Seabright, hope you weren't expecting to leave any time soon Wink

SoupDragon · 04/09/2012 14:15

And Soupie names the next thread :o

Iirc, the Hotel California was also full of hookers, or was that the House of the Rising Sun?

SoupDragon · 04/09/2012 14:23

I think that was House of the Rising Sun.

But yes, I thought it was the next thread title too :o Less than 300 posts to go!

KnottyLocks · 04/09/2012 19:25

StopEatingThatMud · 05/09/2012 01:53

Just marking my place.

My name is mud and I've never crocheted. But.... Tonight, inspired by some nice people on the arts and crafts board, I've ordered myself a book and some hooks and I'm going to give it a bloody good go!

Sorry, I'll go back to lurking and picking up usefully tips now! :)

Question about Penultimate: how do you write on it? Do you have to pretend your finger is a pen?

SoupDragon · 05/09/2012 11:47

If I want to actually write, eg taking notes, I use a stylus to write with. When crossing stuff off a crochet pattern I just use a finger though.

OP posts:
Seabright · 05/09/2012 12:49

Thanks, I didn't know you could use a stylus on the iPad. Which do you use?

SoupDragon · 05/09/2012 13:16

You need one specifically for an iPad/phone. They have a conductive foam tip to them. Mine came free with the case which I got from a website called, I think, thepadzone.
