Knots, I am absolutely staggered by that, not even a year?

That
is
incredible

Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock

But there is some hope for me then?! Only after the lesson I had, I couldn't get to grips with it at all, then when I tried the granny it began to make sense. I think I need a book or something.

PurplePidjin · 29/06/2012 17:56

Pistey, I told you, Aunty Pidj is here to help. Now stop being so damn busy all the time!

BarbaraWoodlouse · 29/06/2012 19:46

Right, big thanks to all.

Have ordered "Crochet unravelled" and a rather natty set of coloured hooks from Amazon. Probably only need one or two hooks really but they were fairly cheap and really pretty Grin.

You Tube recommendations duly noted as I know from experience how much easier it sometimes it to just see what is being described in the book, even though I generally learn better from reading rather than watching.

Will ask at JL about lessons too. They have a cosy little set up there so I wouldn't be surprised if they do, although suspect they will be in working hours.

Wish me luck. In 12 months I might be as good as Soupy and Knotty in my distant dreams

BarbaraWoodlouse · 29/06/2012 19:47

Didn't count you above Pidge as you learnt when you were 6 so I have ooh 14 years or so to catch you up Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/06/2012 19:50

My JL lesson was on a Saturday, it was 4 hours I think, it was very jolly, until the lady said I was a Loose Hooker, and then I couldn't early take it too seriously because I was crying with indoor laughter.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/06/2012 19:53

for early read REALLY Grin

I need to try a new granny pattern. Can anyone recommend something easy that is the next step on from the basic one that I can do?

I can only do basic things, but I have been crocheting now for about 3 months and I have to get a move on if I'm going to get to the right standard within the next nine months. Wine

SoupDragon · 29/06/2012 19:54

Ah yes.... the Loose Hooker... [happy sigh]

Have a look for Circle Into Square, lovely texture :)

SoupDragon · 29/06/2012 19:55

The first blanket I made (finished in September) used this square.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/06/2012 20:00

I have seen that square Soupy and it is luffly - I shall have a go Thanks

And Pidjy I shall look out for that one, Thanks

SoupDragon · 29/06/2012 20:03

It's easy - just trebles and chains IIRC.

Which isn't to say there aren't mistakes in the ones I did :o

Ooh pretty! (call me if you get stuck)

Easier than it looks

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/06/2012 20:35

Someone did tell me, but what is worsted weight?

I've just downloaded the Soupy square, I've got one and a half rounds of my square for Matilda to do, then I shall try that one, then have a look at these too

I shall be more than a one trick pony

Whenisitmysleepytime · 29/06/2012 20:40

I think worsted is Aran weight. ravelry has a bit where you can find out but I can't find it on my phone.

I have 12 out of 114 granny squares left to sew the pesky ends in and then I'm ready to join! Grin

I've kept all the pesky ends in a pile for ds to play/ craft with. It is huge! Ds (3) will be very excited! Hmm

BarbaraWoodlouse · 29/06/2012 20:41

Worsted = Aran Pistey Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/06/2012 21:00

aran is thicker than my usual DK innit?

Lots of the American patterns seem to use it, well in my limited experience it seems so

Is 4 ply less than DK?

BarbaraWoodlouse · 29/06/2012 21:07

Per my lovely kn*tting book (plugged above) it goes:

UK (US)
2 ply (lace weight)
4 ply (fingering Shock)
Double knit (sport / double knit)
Aran (worsted)
Chunky (bulky)

Whenisitmysleepytime · 29/06/2012 21:24

Aran is good as you can use a thicker needle/ hook and it makes a nice fat chunky texture really quick.
I've accidentally mixed Aran and DK in my granny squares. Blush you can tell if you have a good look/ feel but I don't care.
Im a rebel! Grin

PurplePidjin · 29/06/2012 22:06

4ply is made of 4 strands, dk is 8, aran/worsted is 10.

So if you use two lots of 4 ply, it counts as dk - double knit, see?

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 29/06/2012 22:18

Fingering cracks me up :o It's what my mum calls it as she learned to knit properly with her aunt in the US and it's somehow stuck in her head. The teen years were a joy in our house :o

How bad is it that I'm after frogging a bit quite a bit loads nearly 2/3 rds of my skirt back to the waistband as I wasn't going to have even spaces in my ribs otherwise Hmm Perfectionist? Or incredibly anal? Sensible?

PurplePidjin · 29/06/2012 22:19

Uneven ribs would irritate me intensely, yanbu!

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 29/06/2012 22:23

Thanks pidj :o
Dp and both dds sat looking like Shock at me while I did it. It would annoy me forever I think. (Even if it was going to be at the seam and only for the first 10 rows....)

SoupDragon · 30/06/2012 18:51

Its a long time since I've seen my ribs...

I have, however, made a hanging birdie decoration and some crocheted knob covers to cover up some ugly knobs. whistles innocently
