Grapes, try this:

Ch2 6dc in 2nd ch from hook - 6sts

Place marker (thread a bit of wool through)

2dc in each st around. Mark - 12sts

+2dc in next st, dc in next st+ repeat around. Mark - 18sts

Dc around for 10 rows - 18 sts

+dc2tog, dc in next st around+ repeat around. Mark - 12 sts

Stuff.

Dc2tog around. Mark - 6sts

Dc around - 6sts

Change colour

+2dc in next st, dc in next st - 9sts

Dc around to get required body length

Stuff. Change colour

Work 4 dc, dc in 1st dc - 4sts

Dc around to get leg length. Change colour for last 3 rows for shoes. Attempt to stuff.

Join skin colour at groin, dc around for 2nd leg as before.

Ch2, 4dc in 2nd st from hook

Dc around to required length for arm. Stuff. Repeat for other arm.

Join dress colour at waist. Ch1, Fpdc around.

Work increase rows around to desired skirt length.

Embroider on face and hair.

Drink Wine

At a guess, the doll will be 6" or so long depending on how long you make her legs :)

Sorry, didn't mean to write you an epic Blush i just prefer working from pictures for ami!

GrapesAnatomy · 28/06/2012 11:36

Oooh, thanks Pidj. I'm watching this thread so I've got that saved now! Do you mean those picture/symbol patterns? They are still double Dutch to me Blush, I can only work from the ones like you have written!

PurplePidjin · 28/06/2012 11:47

No, i mean I use google images for stuff like cartoon characters and crochet the basic shapes from there Blush

GrapesAnatomy · 28/06/2012 12:59

Ooh, you are ahead of me, I can't make up my own stuff yet. I can cobble together bits from different patterns sort of but that's about it Smile

20 years and hooking together 4 MN woolly hug blankets Wink

Hello lovely hookers.

You might all be well beyond this now, but I was wondering if any of you have any recommendations for a book to start me crocheting?

When I got back into knitting (sorry to use the K word on this thread Wink) I found this book great for clear pictures and simple, quick projects to get me started. You Tube and the fab Tribpot and other lovely MNers took me from there. Smile

I have to admit though, I had a far better grounding in Kn*tting than I have in crochet, albeit 20+ years ago. Rank amateur doesn't really cover it Blush

TIA.

PurplePidjin · 29/06/2012 14:40

Barbara, where are you? We might be able to find you a teacher :)

Otherwise, look for Crochet Geek or The Art Of Crochet By Theresa on google and youtube. Excellent descriptions and clear videos

BarbaraWoodlouse · 29/06/2012 14:45

Thanks Pidge Smile. I'm in Cambridge. Am likely to be crocheting at odd times but someone to call on when if I get stuck would be fab. Smile

What kind of hook is best to start with? I did have one (can't remember what size!) but I've lost it Sad. I'm looking forward to the excitement of new stuff. Sadly, even I can't persuade myself I need to buy more yarn!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/06/2012 15:03

I have a size 4 hook Babs, only because that's what is requested for for the squares. I had my first lesson at a John Lewis, run by Rowan in their woolly wool department, does the JL in Cambridge do any?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/06/2012 15:04

I have just done a two colour flower of which I am eversoproud Grin

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 29/06/2012 15:15

I went into one of those discount books shops as I didn't want to spend too much money in the first place. The most important thing for me was that it actually had things in it that I wanted to make - so I ended up with one that had oven gloves and a pouch for my new hooks! Speaking of which...

Started off with a 5mm hook, but then realised ebay is great and got a whole range of hooks in different sizes for about £3.00 with postage.

PurplePidjin · 29/06/2012 15:23

Fancy a day trip to Southampton? Wink

The yarn label will tell you what size hook you need - dk is usually 4mm, aran 5mm, 4ply 3mm. Same as knitting needles. So if you have lots of baby dk, buy a 3.5mm. Hooks are less than £2 in my local haberdashery dept so i just buy as i go! Also try asking in charity shops, I've had a few bargains that way!

SoupDragon · 29/06/2012 15:27

I learnt 12 months ago with a ball of cheap acrylic DK, a 4mm hook and a book called "Crochet Unravelled" :)

Only 12 months ago Soupy? Shock

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/06/2012 15:29

But you're brilliant at crocheteering! Only 12 months?!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/06/2012 15:29
SoupDragon · 29/06/2012 15:37

Possibly only 11, maybe 13 :o

I think its a steep learning curve at the start and then it's a piece of cake.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 29/06/2012 15:42

Looking through the MN archives, it would indeed appear to have been 12 months ago :)

I would say that I will be on the steep learning curve for a good while yet, but I can't as I am still stunned into silence.

PurplePidjin · 29/06/2012 17:25
