Off to a 'Crochet class for beginners' on Sunday, not too sure what to expect but definately excited about it!! Think I have mastered the Granny square but would like to be a little bit more adventurous soon... And I definately prefer it to the K word!!

SoupDragon · 15/06/2012 14:40

How exciting.

I"d like to take myself off to one of those sessions where you just sit about drinking coffee and pretending to doing some crochet.

SoupDragon thats what I'm looking forward to when I'm not working. Best get on with getting pregnant then!

Jules146 · 15/06/2012 17:02

I am on maternity leave at the mo... so have used this as a good time to learn to crochet! Back to work soon tho :(

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 16/06/2012 15:42

I'm off since Jan '10.... so have lots of time for hooking Blush really should be better than I am :o
I'm all for the American terminology, just makes more sense to me, but can deal with UK too. I wish more sites used symbols, makes it so much easier.
I found the best website, see here for lots of ebooks for crochet

TwoJackRussellsandababy · 18/06/2012 21:12

My rainbow ripple blanket is complete, what should I do next?

Blanket

SoupDragon · 18/06/2012 22:12

Very nice :)

I never have a 'what next?" dilemma as I allays have several projects on the go and several more lined up :)

On top of those projects, DS2 (11) has asked to learn to crochet - It is not going well. We may not both survive the process.

soupdragon you comment about teaching you son to crochet made me do a little nervous laugh... I was thinking of doing a crochet club at school and teach them (at lunchtime) but that would be about 6-10 children all learning... hmm think I would need a lot of Wine in the evening!!

KnottyLocks · 18/06/2012 22:29

My DS wants to learn to knit. KNIT?

I keep diverting the conversation to crochet.

KnottyLocks · 18/06/2012 22:31

Jules, good luck! Stock the fridge up and away you go.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 18/06/2012 23:27

Jules, go for it. I've taught a group of year six to crochet and its been brilliant. They've made alsorts if lovely things and after six months they are coming in and showing me stitches and techniques that I didn't know about.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 18/06/2012 23:42

I learned in a after school club when I was about 8 or 9 along with ten other kids. They clearly had the patience of saints :o

SoupDragon · 19/06/2012 07:37

It doesn't help that he is a competitive perfectionist with a stubborn streak. The session ended with him hurling the hook and yarn down and stomping off upstairs when I told him it was bed time. He may have frogged it angrily too.

I am not a teacher! I really think this is a job for grandmothers. Unfortunately my mother is currently making me a cross stitch because I couldn't be arsed to do it myself hasn't crocheted in years and I've no idea whether XHs can (I doubt it - they are not a creative family!)

PantryBoy, I"m sending you DS2. He's 11 so Y6.

Good luck with it!

Jules146 · 19/06/2012 19:13

PantryBoy I will give it a go then... Not promising I'll get very far (and providing I can get the resources needed!) I am impressed you did so well with yours!!

SoupDragon he was just determined to do a bit more, I get equally as frustrated when I have to put my crocheting down!!

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 19/06/2012 19:43

The trick when teaching a group is to teach a couple and then get them to teach the other children.

The biggest problem I had was teaching the left-handed children correctly.

Lots of my class have taught themselves new techniques using youtube as well. They have made some lovely things - phone socks, bracelets, little soft toys, flowers, placemats etc.

One of my boys has the most perfect technique - his work makes mine look shoddy

The lovely thing has been seeing the huge improvements - the first few weeks they were struggling and they were abslutely amazed that I could crochet and chat simultaneously - now they all sit and chat while we crochet.

nickelbarapasaurus · 19/06/2012 21:19

ooh, I'm in!

how did I miss this?! Shock
(this is what you get for accidentally getting into the computer when you should be watching football - i blame DH - he's the one that left it switched on Blush)

I went to a lovely little knitand natter meeting lasy night (although I am a hooker and invited mt hooker friend too) that was organised by my dance teacher.
It was lovely.
:)

nickelbarapasaurus · 19/06/2012 21:21

jsut looked out of the window and noticed not only has he put the chickens away, but he's also taken the washing in.
all while I'm skiving up here.

KnottyLocks · 19/06/2012 22:09

Make the most of it Grin

I have hooky handache. Can just about manage to pick up Wine.

Might be time for some superduper comfy hooks.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/06/2012 14:55

I really must start my square today, am trying a new pattern, still ever so basic, but really want to try something new. Hopefully it will work!

Passes fabulously squashy pillow for Knots to rest her tired hooking hand on, and wine for the other Wine

SoupDragon · 20/06/2012 15:47

I am doing a square in "Larks Foot". Sounds like a period drama.

I really really want to do crocodile stitch but apparently it eats up yarn. Google it - it's fabulous!

OP posts:
RatherBeOnThePiste · 21/06/2012 06:47

I did my pattern

Came out to be about 5 cm

Rethink time.

crocodile stitch is amazing Shock

GiraffeAHolic · 21/06/2012 09:28

Accidental ginormous granny square blanket is nearing completion :)

Any suggestions for edgings?

DillyTante · 21/06/2012 20:33

Hi all. Lovely to hear about the kids leaning to crochet. I've got six people signed up for my crochet class next week

SoupDragon · 22/06/2012 07:58

DS2's self-made scarf has morphed into being a scarf for a bear. Thus it is finished after 2 evenings hard toil :o

Good uck ith for course :)
