Bet you'll be glad when the ginormous square is finished, Giraffe:)

GiraffeAHolic · 22/06/2012 09:50

I really will!

Has anyone come across a pattern for a crocheted Gruffalo anywhere?

KnottyLocks · 22/06/2012 09:54

Giraffe, re. edging, I'm currently favouring a round of Htr, followed by a round of DC with occasional picots. But have also done a round of Tr, round of DC with picot. Depends how wide you want your boarder really. A simple round of Dc with picot might be all you need.

Good luck, Dilly. I'm sure it'll be fabulous Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/06/2012 17:01

Wish I could find a way of holding the wool that works!

When I went on my course for absolute beginners she did show us a way, but it doesn't seem right, I'm probably doing it wrong. I'm sure there is no standard way, but I would like to find a way that works, can't seem to find it at the mo

I'll let everyone else do the complex stuff, I'll stick here with the basics Grin

SoupDragon · 24/06/2012 17:03

I hold the piece of work between thumb and forefinger and the yarn between middle and ring finger which seems to work for me.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/06/2012 17:18

She did this really complicated way of holding it, of going between her little finger, round her ring finger, and another finger, then up over the top, and she kept on about keeping the tension, and I was like this Confused and then I looked on youtube and was even more Confused

But Soupy, I am liking your way, just done round three of a granny using it, and it seems so straightforward and it works! I am really grateful, but most of all I wish I'd asked yonks ago Grin

DillyTante · 24/06/2012 22:29

My yarn goes once round my little finger then over ring, middle & index to the work between my thumb & middle finger.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/06/2012 08:57

Mine is the same as Dilly, it felt a bit odd at first but it works perfectly for me now and feels totally natural.

SoupDragon · 25/06/2012 09:21

I think I just stumbled across mine when I learnt. I'm not sure it is the same as th book tried to tell me but it's what I fell into using :)

Now... hook holding...? i've realised i hold mine like a toddler holds a spoon to shovel food in Hmm

PurplePidjin · 25/06/2012 09:26

Pistey, I crochet the same way as Dilly, so will show you properly :)

I've made a little cardi, pic on profile, and am working on matching trousers! I went to a local Sit and Stitch on Friday. I've been invited to their Wednesday group, lots of people offered to make baby clothes and one lady was spinning her own wool (need to find out if it's from her own sheep!) so hopefully she'll sell me some :o

Oh, and i met the lady who caretakes the church hall so I'm going to offer PidjChick's services for a Nativity. 25 consecutive years of musical involvement in a Christmas celebration, I'm determined to keep going! I strated by playing the triangle in YR, right through to organising the youth club into carol singing for local elderly people... I'm not even a practising Christian Blush

PurplePidjin · 25/06/2012 09:28

Soupy, my hook goes between right thumb and fore/middle fingers, with the shaft resting on the soft bit between :)

SoupDragon · 25/06/2012 09:30

The shaft of my hook goes under my hand. I'd not given it a second thought until I read people discussing whether they held theirs like a pen or a knife and I thought "um... neither"

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 25/06/2012 09:30

I think this is what happens when you learn from a book and skip the dull bits about technique :o

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 25/06/2012 09:33

Ooh, i hold it like a pen! Never really noticed that before!!

SoupDragon · 25/06/2012 09:38

[wails]

I'm so uncouth!

PurplePidjin · 25/06/2012 09:54

Nope, just a bit... Erm... Different Wink

My hook goes under the palm of my hand. I sometimes find if I crochet for an extended period (over an hour say) that I get a little sore bit where the blunt end of the hook constantly rubs back and forth against the edge of my hand, I could do with longer hooks. I tried holding it like a pen but that doesn't work as I use my thumb and first two fingers to grip the work as well as the hook.

I know what's going to happen now, I'm going to pick my work up, start thinking about all this and be totally unable to do it!

SoupDragon · 25/06/2012 11:14

I've just had to go and get a knife and fork from the cutlery drawer - I feel vindicated! I think it's a "knife hold" rather than something made up :o

Jules146 · 25/06/2012 12:18

When I went to a learners crochet the other day I was told she had never seen anyone tension the yarn like u did Blush I hold the work in my thumb and forefinger an put yarn over middle finger and tension using it that way... Don't think I know how to do it any other way :( HELP!!

DharmaBumpkin · 25/06/2012 12:26

Hi all! I am learning to crochet at the moment doing this blanket because my Mum is here to do all the hard bits for me

Jules146, both Mum and I hold our wool just like you and have no problems with tensioning - I wouldn't let it worry you if you are comfortable!

PurplePidjin · 25/06/2012 13:29

WhoKnows, i hold the work and the wool still in my left hand. I hold just the hook in my right hand. I sometimes and up with an imprint line in my left forefinger Blush

Jules and Soupy, there's no right or wrong, only easy and easier iyswim?

SoupDragon · 25/06/2012 13:36

Oh, I know - this is the way I've fallen into, it works and is comfortable. Which is all it needs to be :)

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 25/06/2012 15:34

Stop putting yourself and your hard work down then and go coo over the little cardi on my profile Angry

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/06/2012 15:40

I am going to get my crochet out later and check that I do actually do what I have said her . Definitely a knife hold though.
