For those who are/want to be involved in making a yarn blanket for EdgarAleNPie this is your crochet thread! I'll post patterns and advice, and hopefully so will other crocheters! Here's a basic Granny square:

1/ Ch2, 4tc in 2nd ch from hook. Slst to join.

2/ Ch2, 3tc ch1 in each st around, join w slst (12 sts)

3/ Ch2 turn, 3tc ch1 3tc in gaps (this makes a corner). Join w slst.

This gives you the square shape. As you increase, the number of gaps to crochet in between corners will increase. Keep increasing until it measures 6" or 15cm - think that's usually another 2 rows? Smile

MummyBerry, it's the best one I found which is unfortunate. I'll have a go at editing and translating into English...

To make the Heart

Ch 6 and join with sl st

Round 1: Working in ring (NOT stitches): 1 double crochet, 1 half treble, 1 treble, 2 double trebles, 2trebles, 3half trebles, 1 double, 3 half trebles, 2trebles, 2 double trebles, 1 treble, 1 half treble, 1 double.
Join with slip stitch to first double.

Round 2: ch1, double crochet in same st, 2 half trebles in next st, 2 trebles in next st, 2 double trebles in next 2 st, treble in next 2 sts, 2 half trebles in next 2 sts, double in next st, 2 half trebles in next 2 sts, treble in next 2 sts, 2 double trebles in next 2 sts, 2 trebles in next 2 sts 2 half trebles in next st, 1 double in next st. sl st to join

That's counting back from what I did which worked - hth!!

Spawn, welcome to the crochet thread!!

a) yes if you would like to

b) i'm not sure how it would look as an embellishment, but it shouldn't affect the overall blanket because the background weight would be the same. Personally, I'm not risking it though...

c) Awesome idea Grin

Thank you Smile

what does "working in ring (not stitches)" mean? Confused
(see, just can't work out patterns!)

Bumperlicioso · 26/03/2011 11:06

Nickel, you should have a ring with a hole in the middle. When you make the stitch intead of putting the hook through the top loops of whatever stitches you have you stick the hook the hole. Does that make sense?

purplepidjin · 26/03/2011 11:08

It means you stick the hook in the middle of the circle of chains, rather than poking it through the outside.

Any better?! It took me a while too Blush

Bumper, i'm loving how rude this all sounds LOL

I've just completed 1 square and have 3 balls of the specified wool to pass on if someone wants them.

I haven't had time to go through all the threads, so if someone could point me in the right direction of the info for posting the squares/passing on wool, I'd be very grateful.

I hope my square is of good enough quality. I've just recently started crocheting and my skills are pretty rudimentary!

purplepidjin · 26/03/2011 11:46

Swap thread here

Pm PixieOnaLeaf for the sending details Smile

OP posts:
nickelbabyhatcher · 26/03/2011 12:15

oh, i see, it means working into the gap - i thought it meant that you didn't make the ring with stitches - like it was just one big loop Blush

nickelbabyhatcher · 26/03/2011 12:16

I've stil lnot had my wool - lots of other people have said they've received theirs - do they mean they've bought them, or that they've received them from their donors (i'm waiting for wool from a donor)

purplepidjin · 26/03/2011 12:19

If your donor has ordered online for it to be sent to them, then they will need time to post on to you Smile

Don't worry, I'll make sure your square gets added

OP posts:
nickelbabyhatcher · 26/03/2011 12:31

I was hoping that would be the case (or that they were doing their square first)

i'm paranoid that I've slipped through the net! Blush

frazzledblob · 26/03/2011 12:42

Hi everyone

My wool has arrived Grin

Thank you to the lovely donor who sent a ball of 509.

The wool I have ordered is a bit darker than I was expecting. I have a ball each of the following shades: 523, 524 and 529 - will these be ok?

Purple are you wanting donations for finishing or do we just post left overs on the swap thread? (sorry if this has already been covered)

nickelbabyhatcher · 26/03/2011 12:42

Edgar's DH said any colour is fine - DS liked loads of different colours, so it'll make the blanket morecolouful!

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 26/03/2011 13:41

mummyberryjuice what's the pattern you're having a problem with? I could take a look at it if you like, I've yet to be defeated by a pattern :)

purplepidjin · 26/03/2011 14:09

Frazzled, swap first then I'll collect leftovers. Give everyoen a chance to do their creative thing Smile

Ooh, Ivy, an experienced person! Definitely welcome!! Grin The pattern is the heart I linked to further up, and I've translated into English terminology and simplified somewhat a few posts up. The simplification is my version of the same pattern, which worked quite nicely for me, although it took about 4 attempts Blush

www.karpstyles.com/crochet/heart1.html
is it this one?
I'll give it a go and come back to report :)

Mishy1234 · 26/03/2011 16:47

Thanks purplesidjin.

I've posted in the swap thread for those who are interested.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 26/03/2011 16:56

the pattern is right, the way it's written is a little confusing, but it does work.
What I would recommend is placing a stitch marker after the first slip stitch, before doing the chain for the second row of the heart, so you know exactly where you are going.
Also, it's actually a lot easier to start with a Magic Ring rather than the chain of 6, because you can leave it loose until you've done all your stitches, then pull it tight. Also leaves a much smaller hole in the centre.

Hope that helps someone :)

EllenJane1 · 26/03/2011 19:54

Just posted on chat thread, but does it matter if I do more than 2 squares? I've got two balls of wool so have enough to do more and no chance to get to the post office for a while to swap.

MummyBerryJuice · 26/03/2011 19:56

Thanks Ivy. I've found another easier pattern here although I've adjusted it a but and am starting the granny at the back of the heart and leaving it 'loose' iykwim.

MummyBerryJuice · 26/03/2011 19:58

Might give the first another go tomorrow, starting with a magic ring rather than the chain.

I will not be defeated!

frazzledblob · 26/03/2011 21:35

I have finished my first square, butterfly design

I have had to add to it a bit to get it to the 6" size so I am hoping it will be ok? I did'nt realise squares would be this challenging Blush

That's the spirit MummyBerryJuice! I had to keep the faith with mine today as numerous times it just did not look right but I just undid a couple of stitches and set off again until I got there Smile

EllenJane1 · 27/03/2011 10:11

Hi all.

I read a post suggesting putting photos of squares on our profile page, so I have! I did one with a pink flower in some yarn I already had once I read that Leo liked pink flowers. Hope it'll be OK as it's in some silky material.

The photo makes the colours look a bit too green, but I used 503 and 508.

Happy crocheting Smile.

frazzledblob · 27/03/2011 11:28

Ellen your squares are great! I have uploaded mine but I am not so sure about it today.

The flower is lovely, may do a flower or heart one today - if I can decide on a pattern as I made the mistake of looking on ravelry aswell and there are so many patterns out there!
