For those who are/want to be involved in making a yarn blanket for EdgarAleNPie this is your crochet thread! I'll post patterns and advice, and hopefully so will other crocheters! Here's a basic Granny square:

1/ Ch2, 4tc in 2nd ch from hook. Slst to join.

2/ Ch2, 3tc ch1 in each st around, join w slst (12 sts)

3/ Ch2 turn, 3tc ch1 3tc in gaps (this makes a corner). Join w slst.

This gives you the square shape. As you increase, the number of gaps to crochet in between corners will increase. Keep increasing until it measures 6" or 15cm - think that's usually another 2 rows? Smile

i've had a go at the flower - it's lovely :)

I'm about to change yarn and have a go at the granny square part, but am a bit scared to mess it up!

Narketta · 23/03/2011 15:56

Hi I'm a crochetter with a couple of questions:)

Firstly do you want the squares done in the round like a granny square or can I do them in rows?

And secondly I've had no luck finding any rowan or DB in our small town but have had a look on ebay and found a shop that stocks it, would you have a look at this and let me know if its the right stuff before I order it.

Thanks.

nickelbabyhatcher · 23/03/2011 16:09

it doesn't matter how you construct your square, as long as it's a square at the end.
so yes, rows will be fine.

don't want to answer the question about the wool ,cos i'm not usre.

Nickelbabyhatcher - did you try the granny square part? I love the flower and think it looks nice in a square but interested to hear if the pattern works for you - had to translate the flower so glad I got the terms right.

Waiting on the postman for the wool. Hope he comes before we go away for the weekend tomorrow, it's a long car journey and crocheting is a great way to pass the time.

I've not done the granny square bit - I'm worried I'll get it wrong!
but it's on my list for today, so when it's done, i'll report back Grin

PrettyCandles · 24/03/2011 15:16

I confidently stated that I can crochet, but now realise that I can't actually read a pattern!

My mum taught me how to crochet and I've made all sorts of odds and bods, but always by eye or from memory. And i don't remember how to make a granny square or anything 3-dimensional.

So, please, someone translate what the abbreviations mean, or point me to a pattern for a nice square where the abbreviations are already translated.

nickelbabyhatcher · 24/03/2011 15:19

you can get instructions for a granny square on youtube - that's probably the best bet.

I can't read a pattern either, always do something wrong - i need to be shown.

nickelbabyhatcher · 24/03/2011 15:21

my update - I did the flower, fine, lovely, then tried to join the granny square part to it!
bad idea.
i've broken my flower and ruined the look of it.

what i will do for the real thing:
I will make a flower
i will make a granny square
i will sew the flower onto the front of the granny square.

ohboob · 24/03/2011 18:59

I just got my yarn through the post, it's so beautiful. A lovely colour and very soft.

Pretty candles, earlier in this thread I linked to a woman on youtube who shows you granny squares. That should help you, if not just search on youtube and there are lots of tutorials.

The patterns can look terrifying can't they?! I'm still learning to decipher them.

SoriaMoria · 24/03/2011 20:44

NBH am sorry the pattern wasn't more help. Is definitely easier to show in person. Your plan sounds ace and it will be lovely. Maybe I should hold a course in how the pattern works!

MummyBerryJuice · 25/03/2011 08:28

Aaaaarrgghh!! This will be my 5th attempt at that damn heart. I just don't seem to have enough stocked on round 2. Ever!

MummyBerryJuice · 25/03/2011 08:40

I'm going to try Soria's flower now.

nickelbabyhatcher · 25/03/2011 10:18

it's okay, Soria it's not your pattern, it's me, i get confused when reading aptterns. I'm amazed i managed to get the flower right!

I do need to see someone doing it.

(maybe you could do a video and upload it to youtube? Wink )

purplepidjin · 25/03/2011 11:36

Mummyberry the wool arrived yesterday thank you so so much!

Are you doing the heart I linked to?

OP posts:
MummyBerryJuice · 25/03/2011 17:09

It's my pleasure.

Yes, I am. I must be misreading the pattern because no matter how many times I repeat it I always end up 2 stitches short on Rnd 2!

Have been out all day and am knackered. Going to cook our dinner and put DS to bed. Once that is done will see if I have any energy to attempt is again.

If not you may just end up with a couple of plain grannies and some plain knitted squares. Or I may do what nbh is doing and sew a flower onto a granny Smile

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 25/03/2011 20:39

I might be a little late to this, but can I help?

purplepidjin · 25/03/2011 21:36

I had to wiggle it a bit on the second row to make it work, I think there's a mistype. I got to the single crochet then just worked backwards so it was symmetrical. I totally ditched the instructions once I'd done the heart! it's come out at a slightly skewiff angle, but looks cute and will be fine once blocked Smile

IvySedai, if you message PixieOnaLeaf she will send you all the info you need - and thank you Smile

MummyBerryJuice · 26/03/2011 07:33

Thanks purple I thought I was just being an idiot but clearly there is a problem with the pattern. Makes me feel less stupid. I think she's put too many stitches in on the first half as the 'bottom' of the heart didn't line up on the two rounds. I may go in search for a different heart pattern cause I really like the idea.

SpawnChorus · 26/03/2011 09:52

I've just received some beautiful yarn from another MNer Smile. Before I get started I have a couple of questions. Sorry if they've already been addressed here or elsewhere.

a) are we allowed to make more than one square

b) I have some of my own Cashmerino chunky in a suitable blue colour. Might I use a wee bit of that for an embellishment (e.g. sewn-on flower)? Not sure how it might affect the evenness.

c) my kind donor has sent two balls of the gorgeous DB lilac colour. I'm guessing that a 6" sq will only use half a ball or so. Does anyone want to swap a ball with me? (I'll post that on the yarn-swapping thread too). PM me if you're interested. BTW I'm in Edinburgh, but am happy to post :)
