For those who are/want to be involved in making a yarn blanket for EdgarAleNPie this is your crochet thread! I'll post patterns and advice, and hopefully so will other crocheters! Here's a basic Granny square:

1/ Ch2, 4tc in 2nd ch from hook. Slst to join.

2/ Ch2, 3tc ch1 in each st around, join w slst (12 sts)

3/ Ch2 turn, 3tc ch1 3tc in gaps (this makes a corner). Join w slst.

This gives you the square shape. As you increase, the number of gaps to crochet in between corners will increase. Keep increasing until it measures 6" or 15cm - think that's usually another 2 rows? Smile

Hello. Excellent idea Pidjin. I have some patterns for squares with flowers in the centre - do you think that would be ok as a pattern?

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 12:07

Fairly complicated

Really complicated

Looks fairly straight forward for those who can read a pattern (not me!)

This one looks amazing and not too hard!

Funny faces! Not the easiest pattern to understand, but looks like it'll be good if you can figure it Smile

I'm a beginner, but would like to contribute if I can.

Do I need to use a specific size of hook or type/colour wool?

MummyBerryJuice · 21/03/2011 16:13

I'm better at patterns than charts. Soria do you have any patterns. I've only ever crocheted simply granny squares, flowers and 'ripple' blankets but am pretty sure I could manage something more complicated with a pattern

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 16:17

Mishy, here's the info
For the fabric quilt:

7" squares
cotton or poly-cotton
pre-washed
zigzagged or overlocked around the edges, if possible
Any colour
If appliqued, using cotton
Can embroider
Any design to be in the central 6" square
Can send plain squares too

For the yarn quilt:
6" or 15cm squares in any combination of
Debbie Bliss www.debbieblissonline.com/Yarn.asp?yid=19 in 006, 007, 008 and 606 or
Rowan www.knitrowan.com/yarns/Cashsoft-DK.aspx?testid=36 in 532, 505, 535, 534, 525, 508 and 503

For those wishing to help financially Pixie will be sending a PM with a specific PayPal address.

For those who, like me, are time-rich but cash-poor, PM Pixie and she will arrange to get materials to you.

At a later date (next week probably), we will send a stamped addressed envelope to each crafty person so they can send their contribution to the right person.

We will then make some arrangement to get the quilts to Edgar and family.

And the link to the original thread Smile

MummyBerry, the links I put above are mainly patterns Wink

nickelbabysnatcher · 21/03/2011 16:39

I need wool, but I can make a few squares. (i hope)
I've PM'd Pixie.

MummyBerryJuice - i'm a granny squarer! Grin

Bumperlicioso · 21/03/2011 16:44

.

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 16:45

Yay, that makes three of us on grannies! I can knock 'em out in about 20 minutes

OP posts:
nickelbabysnatcher · 21/03/2011 16:56

me too, if I hurry.
Now i've discovered how to turn into the next round Grin

(i only found out a month or so ago, and I'd always hated starting off until then!)

Mishy1234 · 21/03/2011 18:13

Thanks purplepidjin, I'll go and have a hunt for the right stuff asap.

ohboob · 21/03/2011 19:00

Excellent. I love Granny squares. And there is plenty of advice on youtube on how to crochet, if people want to do it but don't know how. It is very easy to pick up. The lady I learnt from is here

I have just bought some Rowan DK 508 as directed in the pm. So I'm really looking forward to starting. It feels good to be actually doing something however small.

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 19:04

Awesome, ohboob! How is it to work with? I'm awaiting delivery and quaking in my boots at what dp is going to say when he finds out I took on another project

OP posts:
ohboob · 21/03/2011 19:13

The Rowan yarn? I don't know, I literally just bought it online half an hour ago! Will tell you when I get it but it looks very pretty.

Lol at your quaking. It's for a good cause, so just guilt trip him if he complains Wink

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 19:24

Ah, ok. I was hoping someone had found it in John Lewis or Hobbycraft!!!

Dp is very protective of me, I had a whole load of ptsd anxiety depression crap going on and he knows what I'm like for over-exerting myself - so do I but it doesn't stop me Wink

Plus, I crochet at work so can do lots there lol

OP posts:
SoriaMoria · 21/03/2011 20:18

Evening all

I've a pattern for a granny square with a flower in the middle. I need to work out how big it will be (and translate it as it's in a different language) but am very happy to if anyone is interested?

SoriaMoria · 21/03/2011 20:20

and stupid question - what is Ravelry? Never heard of it before...

MummyBerryJuice · 21/03/2011 20:27

Yes I am Soria! Ravelry is a sort of MN for yarn crafters. Just joined myself and haven't really had time to explore it BUT it looks like an excellent resource.

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 21:42

Ravelry is the coolest thing I have ever encountered Blush It has EVERYTHING!! Grin

OP posts:
SoriaMoria · 21/03/2011 22:18

Right - I shall be getting on to Ravelry too then - thanks for the tip.

MummyBerryJuice I've been mucking about all evening trying to get the pattern to work. The one I had wasn't quite right and I can't find the other one. Ack. Anyway, think I'm nearly there with something that will work and hope to be able to put it on here tomorrow.

Also, having a look around for other patterns I found this www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=125626

ohboob · 21/03/2011 22:34

Sorry to hear about the ptsd purple. I've had that and I know how disabling it can be. So now I'm on your dp's side. Don't overdo it!!

I love ravelry too. I just joined. I'm loving looking at all the patterns.

Glad to meet some other crafty people on here.

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 23:00

Thanks, ohboob. I'm under control most of the time Smile 'tis just a PITA when I have a meltdown Angry

Bear in mind I'm happy to meet up with folk - Hampshire/Dorset border so either county is possible Smile

OP posts:
JemimaMop · 22/03/2011 10:11

Where is the best/cheapest/most reliable place to buy the yarn from online? I have checked with my local wool shop and they don't stock either of them. I live in a small town miles from anywhere so can't pop to Hobbycraft, John Lewis etc.
