Husband left me sleeping in hot car

We went out for lunch today. Husband drove home and I fell asleep in the passenger seat. We got home and him and the children all went inside, leaving me in the hot car parked in direct sunlight with all the windows up and doors closed. I only woke up about 15mins when my son came to look for something. I was boiling hot when I woke up and was so angry he'd left me there.

We'd had an argument earlier and I almost think he did it on purpose. He says he didn't know I was asleep and thought I was just sitting in the car for a while. I'd been sleeping with my head drooping forward about 10 miles so I think it would have been obvious. He says oh i told you "we're home" and you ignored me. I was flippin' asleep!

I'm upset what could have happened if I'd been there longer in that heat. There's no way I would leave a child in a hot car with windows all up so I don't see why he thinks it's OK to do it to me. AIBU? Thank you

This woman died. The car windows were open. It was a lot hotter outside but the windows were down. I do believe you could potentially have died, fainting from heatstroke and confusion even if you awoke. As a poster commented upthread, the bar for men is incredibly low. Had your husband left the car in the shade or opened the windows, you’d have been fine.

Woman, 75, barred from VA hospital due to COVID rules dies in hot car

Lear Litt died while sitting in a car outside a North Las Vegas hospital in 110-degree weather. Her husband, David, was receiving treatment at the facility. Due to COVID, she wasn't allowed to join him.

Goodness what a drama over nothing, your husband sounds generous allowing you to carry on staying in a car and then having another 1.5hr sleep rather than bother you with coparenting your children.

Children and animals are not the same as an adult. They are not as able to regulate their temperatures you as an adult unless you have pumped yourself with botox will get hot and then sweat. The sweat will cool you down and help to regulate your temperature.

You want to make a big drama about how wronged you have been, and are being facilitated by the over dramatic 'you could die from heatstroke' brigade.

Nevada is mainly desert is bloody hot. The UK is an extremely cold country and rarely gets hot. So hardly a comparison.

FelisCatus0 · 19/06/2023 05:00

and is bloody hot, that should read.

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/06/2023 05:03

That is a cunty thing to do - of course he knew you were asleep, why did he tell you you were home if he thought you were fucking awake? You'd have known that!

I'd have had a banging headache and been vomiting later if someone left me asleep in a car in this weather for just 15 minutes (I am v prone to it anyway).

You've never slept in the day? Or you've never slept through a small noise in the day? Either, wow.

how do you knows the sound of the car doors being closed was quiet if you were asleep?

Makemyday99 · 19/06/2023 05:19

I don’t know why you’ve bothered posting here tbh, you clearly don’t think yabu & are quick to point out why you think you are in the right to any comments that think you are bu so bit of a pointless post really

What about all the comments saying OP is right and what DH did was dangerous and mean?

You can't be locked into most cars. The inside handles unlock the doors too.

My car locks you in. It's scary!

Reminds me of a short film I saw once called La Cabina

Shoxfordian · 19/06/2023 06:11

My husband would have woken me up so it does seem a bit mean to just leave you but I don’t think you were going to die from it. Is he usually a bit thoughtless?

MintJulia · 19/06/2023 06:15

Uuuhm, you're a grown up! You're perfectly capable of getting out of the car on your own. You woke up when your body decided you were too hot. All completely normal.

If you had a spat with your dh earlier, he probably didn't wake you because he thought you were better left alone.

You sound tired and grumpy, I think he was right to leave you to sleep.

Spankydom · 19/06/2023 06:21

If your husband didn’t know you were asleep, why would he open a window for you?

Ladybug14 · 19/06/2023 06:23

I've just Googled. An adult can die in a hot car (of heat stroke) as the body can quickly shut down when it's overheated

However because adults can open the car door, and children and animals can't, generally adults DONT die or get ill from being in a hot car

However I think your husband is a lying gaslighting shit, to leave you in a hot car with the windows shut. I'm assuming he didn't lock the car as well ? 😬

Motnight · 19/06/2023 06:24

It's definitely a shitty thing for him to have done.

He must have known that she was asleep....

Srin · 19/06/2023 06:25

It shows a lack of respect and care from your husband but he was probably fed up with you after your argument.

This
your husband drove you home after a boozy brunch, you didn’t even stay awake to keep company in the car, and he left you to sleep an extra 15 mins when you got home, and you’re angry. I think this must be a reverse and he’s the one who is mad at you?

Aprilx · 19/06/2023 06:28

I’d be angry with DH iIf he left my dog in the car, but me in the car, that is all on me. Nothing would have happened other than I would have felt hot, woken up and got out. Although I cannot imagine falling asleep in the car anyway.

OP says it was a big lunch, nit a boozy brunch. Why does OP need to keep him company? Confused Their kids were in the car.

He didn’t check on her after 15 minutes, she could have been asleep for ages.

Catspyjamas17 · 19/06/2023 06:34

He sounds like a liar. "I didn't know you were asleep?" Bollocks. What did he think you were doing, examining the insides of your eyelids? He may have thought you'd prefer to finish your nap and come in when you are ready, but in that case should have left a window open.

Oblomov23 · 19/06/2023 06:35

You are turning this into more of a drama than it is. He left you there. So?

Spankydom · 19/06/2023 06:35

If someone is chauffeuring you around, it’s reasonably polite to at least stay awake.
sure she’s an adult and can make her own way out of the car? She’s not a baby

BadNomad · 19/06/2023 06:36

You'd had an argument then didn't speak for 10 miles so I think it actually could be possible that he didn't realise you were asleep. He could have thought you were both in a huff with each other.

He’s not chauffeuring her around, the family went for lunch together.

There will be times when she does things for him, and he won’t be expected to be pay for it with his company.
