Husband left me sleeping in hot car

We went out for lunch today. Husband drove home and I fell asleep in the passenger seat. We got home and him and the children all went inside, leaving me in the hot car parked in direct sunlight with all the windows up and doors closed. I only woke up about 15mins when my son came to look for something. I was boiling hot when I woke up and was so angry he'd left me there.

We'd had an argument earlier and I almost think he did it on purpose. He says he didn't know I was asleep and thought I was just sitting in the car for a while. I'd been sleeping with my head drooping forward about 10 miles so I think it would have been obvious. He says oh i told you "we're home" and you ignored me. I was flippin' asleep!

I'm upset what could have happened if I'd been there longer in that heat. There's no way I would leave a child in a hot car with windows all up so I don't see why he thinks it's OK to do it to me. AIBU? Thank you

I mean if you had a fight and he figured you was just being eugh and sulking in the car he didn’t do anything wrong.

If he knew you had called asleep he should have left a window open.

How long a drive was it tho to fall asleep after lunch.

This doesn't make any sense. There's no thought process that makes it ok to leave someone in a car on a hot day when you know that, at the very least, they're going to get very uncomfortable. Even if he truly believed OP was pretending to be asleep (why would she do that? How does that impact on him?), he should have given her a nudge in case he was wrong, to wake her. That's what normal adults who aren't vengeful arseholes do.

OhmygodDont · 19/06/2023 16:07

So he should possibly piss her off even more if she was just musing life by nudging her to let her know they were home even though he thought she knew because he already alerted verbally. When they had been arguing earlier in the day.

Yeah no I’m not poking an angry bear 😂 the car was unlocked she’s a fully grown adult not a baby being left in the car.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 19/06/2023 16:09

I napped for two hours on the couch yesterday while the tv was on and the family chattered away. I can nap through anything if I'm tired enough.

BadNomad · 19/06/2023 16:15

He might not have looked at her? I don't think I do. I just stop the car then say "let's go" while getting out. I don't turn towards the passenger seat to look someone in the face to say we're home.

They'd had an argument. They hadn't spoken for the last 10 miles of the drive. I can very much imagine just getting out of the car and going into the house then assume she was having a huff in the car when she didn't come in immediately. I probably would have gone out to check after a bit (or sent one of the kids) when I realised she was still not in. That probably would have been longer than 15 minutes but not long enough for her to die.

cassiatwenty · 19/06/2023 16:16

Is your husband hot now?

Lifescary · 19/06/2023 16:19

You need to control your anger and stop blaming your husband for your actions.
No wonder DH is happy to leave you in the car, he must have grateful for the peace and quiet.

The action of falling asleep?

pandarific · 19/06/2023 16:26

Sounds a bit like a blood sugar thing tbh. Have you been tested for diabetes?

MrsSamR · 19/06/2023 16:31

This all sounds very odd. Why would you plan a lunch a long drive away when you'd just worked 3 night shifts back to back?

hot2trotter · 19/06/2023 16:31

Either this is a wind up or you need to get a grip.

Sorry - I understand now, he drugged her or hypnotised her.

Where did I say that?

You said the op should take responsibility for her actions? She fell asleep. She's human. She didn't do anything wrong. Yes, she fell asleep on her own accord, but who in their right mind would say, that's their fault, they should take responsibility. Its so petty

I didn't once moan he didn't wake me up, here we go ppl making things up again.

Your entire thread is how he left you in a boiling hot car and you only managed to get out after 15mins because you were woken to by someone else.

So yes you are annoyed he didn’t wake you, even though you say he didn’t know you were asleep.

Why do you keep changing the story.
Just admit that you were hot and tired and that you were in the wrong.

Cas112 · 19/06/2023 16:51

It's really upto to yourself to wake up and get out the car, not on himConfused

Yes. When someone appears to be asleep in a hot car and it's time to get out, you nudge them and risk pissing them off if they're just musing life.

The justifications for this shitty treatment have got so absolutely ridiculous that I'm starting to think it's part of a concerted effort. In no universe does any normal person think it's unreasonable to nudge a sleeping person in the car to wake them when you're not only home, but also in a heatwave. Honestly, they've gone way beyond plausible now.

I don't know what it is, OP. Maybe we've been taken over by incels and MRAs...we do get occasional influxes and they'll say anything to put a woman in the wrong. Whatever it is, I'd pay them no heed any more. They're so risible that I think they might just be seeing how ridiculous they can get before we switch off.

You implied it, rather rudely in fact. But I suspect you are as argumentative as the OP.

I didn't say falling asleep was the OP's fault nor did I imply it.

What I said was she should stop blaming her DH for her own actions. In other words don't blame him, don't pick a fight and don't attribute blame.

As a general thought if you want your DH to check whether or not you are asleep then don't have so many rows. Learn to smile not snarl.

Lacucuracha · 19/06/2023 17:10

There are a lot of cold people on this thread.

Taking care of a loved one often means doing things for them whilst they are unaware.

Sometimes I’ve realised that DH has put the duvet around me in the night because I seemed cold. Or he has woken me up for work because I forgot to set my alarm.

Yes I am responsible for doing these things myself but caring for someone and getting care back should not be the cause of so much derision.

If you can’t even expect the man who promised to love you to wake you up in a hot car then what hope from anyone else.

Yes, the MRAs and incels have arrived to tell us to 'smile, love'. No. If you care about someone, you'll check they are ok. And you'll do that whether they've been snappy or not.

I agree. I can't imagine what kind of relationships these people must have if they resent doing the most small things for their partner on the basis of 'well it's their fault'

Out of interest, when did you last have a shower? What we rowed about has nothing to do with this. If it was about him hitting me or me burning the dinner, does one justify what he did? The row earlier in the day was not part of this. Not an unhappy marriage no.

No. I wouldn't have minded either way if woken or not. What I'm annoyed about is he left me there in direct sunlight with the windows all up and the doors closed. Even if he'd parked facing the other way it wouldn't have been so hot on me.
