DP has "gone hiking in a national park with a colleague for the weekend" after a conference. The national park is rather remote, and the accommodation apparently doesn't have wifi. So I accepted that there would be no contact from Friday morning until they returned to the airport Monday night.

Except Google's wondrous data-dribbling abilities have just informed me (via a GPS-driven automatic facebook update of the colleague) that the colleague returned to London on Friday.

I was already a bit about the lack of wifi meaning no contact because of mega-expensive overseas data download costs, since surely a computer geek and his colleague know how to stop their googlephones automatically syncing diaries etc when they turn the phone on to send a text?

Email and text haven't been answered. DP's phone is clearly in the USA.

i guess I should resist temptation to ring up the colleague and ask what the hell is going on?

Hope you're ok Tortoise. Must have been a horrible weekend. Don't make any decisions now, as it could all be a big misunderstanding.

I would have definatly been ringing colleague again to check the ring tone. with a blocked number so you dont look stalkerish!

TulipsInTheSunshine · 28/06/2010 12:46

or even from a payphone just to be absolutely sure he can't figure out it's you... judging by what you've said he's a phone geek so better safe than sorry.

clam · 28/06/2010 13:33

When's he due back?

phoenixflower · 28/06/2010 13:48

HOpe you are okay OP!

Ellielou02 · 28/06/2010 13:51

Hope you are ok OP been following your thread this weekend!

Anniebee65 · 28/06/2010 16:25

Oh dear, this is a bit stomach churning isn't it? OP you are being very calm, all credit to you.

Hope you are okay today.

tortoisehellOstrich · 28/06/2010 16:32

thanks chaps.

My dear mother has managed to take my mind off it a bit by morphing into an evil white supremacist or something (see bigot mother thread in AIBU for a wry laugh).

While everything is eerily quiet re DP and colleague - who should be at an airport by now - my mother's return email and my sister jumping into the argument is providing quite a lot of entertainment, in a I can't believe I'm related to these people kind of way...

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 28/06/2010 16:38

Hello Tortoise, did you call colleague's work today? Sorry to hear you're having more "distractions". You're seeming remarkably together through all of this.

tortoisehellOstrich · 28/06/2010 16:41

called work a couple of times, didn't get an answer. But he could've been in the lab rather than his office, and i don't want to drag other lab members into this - they know my voice - so didn't call the varaious other numbers.

OP posts:
YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 28/06/2010 16:42

How're you holding up? Have you tried calling colleague again to see if his phone has an American ringtone?

DaftApeth · 28/06/2010 18:58

I would be tempted to use the time until his return in having a good rummage through his paperwork and any emails you can.

Perhaps get a look at his mobile before you confront him i.e. before he has a chance to delete anything.

I hope that the answer is a simple and obvious one though.

whoneedssleepanyway · 29/06/2010 06:11

Any news Tortoise? Hope all ok.

peeringintothevoid · 29/06/2010 11:31

I keep checking this thread to see whether there's any news...hope things aren't as bad as they seemed.. {{{hug}}}

You're keeping us in suspense!

FortunateHamster · 29/06/2010 12:00

Is he back home yet? Interested to see what his excuses are. Hope there's a chance they could be plausible...

Sn0wflake · 29/06/2010 12:55

Hope everything is OK Tortoise.

Mum72 · 29/06/2010 16:49

Just wonderd if you are OK. Is he home yet?

Hoping there is somehow a viable explaination.

Plumm · 29/06/2010 19:08

Is he home yet, Tortoise?

AuntieMaggie · 29/06/2010 19:21

hope you're ok x

Sanesometimes1 · 29/06/2010 20:27

argggggggggggggggggg just got to the end of these threads and I don't know what the outcome is !!!!!! it;s like getting to the end of a really good book and the last page is missing - please please post Tortoise and let us know what's happened x

HalfTermHero · 29/06/2010 20:44

Has the wanderer returned? I hope you have got to the bottom of whatever he was up to. Be strong and remember that you don't deserve to be lied to and disrespected in his way.

NormalityBites · 29/06/2010 21:07

Was there anyone else there with them (at the conference) ? If there was is it not a possibility that phones got mixed up/switched, colleagues phone ended up back in the UK, you rang it, other colleague answered, realised it wasn't his phone, panicked?

I know I've picked up other peoples phones before.

Of course if there was noone else there ignore me. Hope you're OK.

diggingintheribs · 29/06/2010 21:11

If he's gone hiking on a national park wouldn't he take photos? I'm sure he'll be seeing some beautiful views.

JacobBlacksBitch · 29/06/2010 22:34

another one wondering about your wanderer OP and hoping you are OK.

pluperfect · 29/06/2010 23:12

Shodan and YouKnowNothingOfTheCrunch are right about the ringtone (although it is too late to do anything about it now). I always know when I have rung someone who is on Roaming, so I keep the conversation short.

Sorry you have had this worry driving you mad, and I hope it can be resolved soon.

solo · 29/06/2010 23:13

No news yet...?
