To get frustrated with the sheer volume of abbreviations on this forum? I can deal with DH, DP, DC etc (although it grates to be honest "Darling Child" ) but every time I look in I see another set of initials that leave me clueless.
Is it that people are slow typists?

yy ikwym but YABU.

biddysmama · 19/05/2010 12:28

ive accidentaly used them in texts to my friends/family

Fluffyone · 19/05/2010 12:29

Rubyruby those are abbreviations in common use, but Mumsnet has it's own abbreviated language. The latest one to catch my eye is OC.
I tend to ignore them, either I work out what they mean quickly or just move on to something else. I really can't be arsed clicking on a link to acronyms to get a translation every 5 minutes.
I think it could be rather alienating for new members, but I'm not sure that matters?

Fluffyone · 19/05/2010 12:29

(WTF is OC??)

YABU, pmsl, fgs read the acronym list!

biddysmama - yy, me too, nearly!

Still trying to find out what WIMBEWAIN stands for, mind you....

thumbwitch ... no idea what it means but i'm singing "in the jungle the mighty jungle " now after reading it lol

squeaver · 19/05/2010 12:35

The acronyms aren't half as annoying as people who don't put the full question in the thread title.

upahill · 19/05/2010 12:36

I struggle at times. Not all the acronyms are on the list.

I didn't know what MAP was until I asked. To me that was something I use on a near enough daily basis to get round the Dales or Lakes!

Fluffyone · 19/05/2010 12:37

I agree sqeaver, I thought that myself when I looked at it on the threads list. I'd have edited the title if only Mumsnet had that simple facility.

OP posts:
Fluffyone · 19/05/2010 12:38

OC - I think it means Only Child. (See? Why not just type the words?).

OP posts:
mumbar · 19/05/2010 12:39

I had no idea and read acrynyms now I use them all the time as quicker!!

If i don't know I ask.

OC is only child I think?

I suppose having a special language and an unwritten code about what is regarded with contempt or not does make it more like an exclusive club.
It takes a while for people to learn that they should call their partner DP, even if they never call him Darling in real life. They are not allowed to call him their OH (other half) though, even if they feel that he is.
Just pondering really, this all does give the place it's own rather unique character.

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 19/05/2010 12:48

you can call your partner your OH - it tends to be regarded as him being less than dear if you do though.

Frankly I'd rather people used DH/DP than hubby.

Biddysmama - maybe that's where it's from, but I don't see how it would fit!

squeaver · 19/05/2010 12:49

Some people do use OH.

The "D" rarely stands for Darling in my posts. I prefer Damn, Disgusting, Degenerating, Disorganised, Disingenuous or Dogging.

(one of those may be made up)

thumbwitch · 19/05/2010 12:51

hmm, have just done a search on wimbewain and think I might have misremembered it as the only posts that come up are ones I have done - pants. I know I've seen something very similar but it's obviously not exactly what I've written.
I'm never going to find out, am I...
