To get frustrated with the sheer volume of abbreviations on this forum? I can deal with DH, DP, DC etc (although it grates to be honest "Darling Child" ) but every time I look in I see another set of initials that leave me clueless.
Is it that people are slow typists?

Now post!

TiggyR · 19/05/2010 14:55

I agree actually. I use some of the very commonly known ones that are too long-winded to type, like YABVU, IYKWIM, IMVHO, but I hate trying to fathom some of the lesser known ones, and personally I don't find the word 'son' or 'kids' or 'Mum' too labour intensive to type.

BythewayItsStillMe · 19/05/2010 17:15

Pedro, if anyone has a go at me for using that on their thread I'm gonna send them looking for you ... but I've done it...

I agree with Pixie - they're age old acronyms which have been handed down through the MN generations (slight exaggeration emoticon!)

You can't just roll up and start moaning about them !!!!

ooojimaflip · 19/05/2010 17:54

Pixie - aye, the only Darlings I know are ex-chancellors or peter pans mates.

I call my son darling all the time...but it's more in a drawly, southern belle way- "C'mon, darrrrrlin', get those shoes on so we can go to the park." But when I type DS I hear "dear" in my head, too.

I like the abbreviations. Except when I use them in RL and people are like "OMG, GAL FFS!"

ginhag · 19/05/2010 18:03

Wouldn't it be just great if everyone in 'Am I Being Unreasonable' just called their thread 'ok,am I?'

I don't like reading 'BD' but that's because it's a naff expression, not because of the acronym. It is starting to be ousted by 'SWI' which is infinitely better.

CheekyPinkSox · 19/05/2010 18:06

BD??? Babydancing? WTF!
whats wrong with typing SEX! Lol

CheerfulYank · 19/05/2010 18:06

Oooh, what's SWI? I think BD is ridiculous, btw. Not the acronym, the expression.

ginhag · 19/05/2010 18:12

I think the idea of BD (yuck yuck yuck I've typed that TWICE now) is because it's not just sex,it's sex with the aim of getting pregnant....

SWI = Shagging With Intent.

CheerfulYank · 19/05/2010 18:20

OOOOOHHH...that makes sense. As you were

thumbwitch · 19/05/2010 23:41

Poledra! You are a STAR! Thanks for that, it has been a mild irritant for some time.

Pedrothellama - go to the foot of OUR stairs, shurely? That's what my grandma always said but she were from Yorkshire so mebbe it's different there.

SWI = much much much better than BD, which should never have been used to describe sex. Baby dancing is what my DS does when he's watching Madagascar 2, and sex it ain't.

TinyPawz · 19/05/2010 23:53

what does yy mean?

thumbwitch · 20/05/2010 00:09

yy = yes yes

TinyPawz · 20/05/2010 00:27

okey dokey then....never would have guessed that

Fluffyone · 20/05/2010 08:39

Pixie, as I pointed out earlier, I too looked at the thread title when it was listed and didn't like it. If only Mumsnet had an edit facility...
No, I don't think that people will suddenly stop using the acronyms, but it's nice to see that some have been brave enough to admit that they find them irritating as well.
Personally, I think that the acronyms contribut to the slightly cliquey feeling of Mumsnet, which is something that doesn't bother me.

pedrothellama - thumbwitch is right - it is the foot of OUR stairs. An expression my father uses all the time, and he is a Lancashire lad. Another favourite round here is -I'll show my bottom on the town hall steps - ISMBOTTHS.
