to hate the BugaBoo (or however you spell it)

that's it really. I don't even 100% know why but I can't stand them. Some reasons are they are horrible colours and ridiculously expensive, unnecessary to spend that surely? And it seems to me (round here anyway) that BugaBoo owners are v smug - "only the best for my children" types. Someone I know insisted on getting one and they have so little money that half the time she can't afford to even get on a bus to do anything, so she and her kid sit inside all day, pretty much every day. Better to get a cheaper travel system and let the poor child get some fresh air IMHO... ooh, they just really make my blood boil. Happy to be put straight by proud BugaBoo owners

Well my old maclaren has lasted over 8 years and is a lot niftier than a bug thing. They're so big and clumsy looking, not exactly compact.

TheBolter · 18/05/2010 22:02

I have observed that the people I know who have them are poncey those immaculate, shiny types who like their stuff. I sure it's just a coincidence though .

In fact I'm a bit of a ponce myself and if I happen to accidentally have another baby, I could possibly be lured into buying a Bug. They do look quite comfortable, and if I'm honest, yeah, they do look quite cool. However I'd still feel a bit self-conscious as the mums round my way are old money types who don't give a hoot about having a stylish pushchair. A Bugaboo would be as conspicuous in our playground as a gleaming white Range Rover would be in the school car park.

I'm just glad that I no longer have to use a pushchair!

sungirltan · 18/05/2010 22:02

look!! there is a fan page for them he he

PosyPetrovaPauline · 18/05/2010 22:02

kitty - i ALWAYS agree with you but not on this one
i loathe maclarens and i have had 3

ginhag · 18/05/2010 22:02

erk! I also have some birkenstocks!

Guess that makes me Smuggy McSmug and possibly a scial pariah

But I'm scruffy! I never remember to brush my hair never mind look smugly groomed! I have seriously dodgy toes which render nice shoes pretty much impossible! And I aware that I have faaaar too many faults to ever ever EVER pull off being smug.

Not really bothered if people hate buggies or shoes or any other 'stuff'. Only the thought that someone would actually think badly of me for making those choices. Cos I'm needy.

And I had a tooth out today. Pleeeeease love meeeeee!

Thediaryofanobody · 18/05/2010 22:03

YABU and rather smug yourself.

PosyPetrovaPauline · 18/05/2010 22:05

i would never ever imagine someone being smug just because of their pram

They are ten a penny on our playground and no one blinks - why would they? They are not even new

SloanyPony · 18/05/2010 22:05

"But what is so good about it? Genuine question. It's not the only pram where you can face your child is it?"

No, of course not. The rear facing thing is not even a reason I bought it but its nice to have the option.

The carrycot is lovely when you have a newborn. I like the way you can change the direction of the child, but also which wheels you have on front just by moving the handle. It is excellent for walks in the woods if you have the big wheels at the front, though then the steering is poo to be fair because the big wheels dont swivel. The "scary" front weels are amazing, it turns on a sixpence, the suspension is amazing. Its very comfy for the child, and you can get a cup holder that holds a starbucks!

You can make it a travel system with the Maxi Cosi Cabriofix.

Its just very very userfriendly, things like the handle height and the brakes up the top and the way it steers etc.

I dont think the Bugaboo has anything that NO other pushchair has - it doesn't do your hoovering for you, more's the pity. I know people say you are a "sheep" etc but rather than following the crowds its more of a case of hearing personal recommendations and then maybe trying out your friends one "steer that for a minute, what do you think" etc and you sort of see them in action and think, yep, that'd do me nicely. I've had various friends with other puschairs salivate over various features (brother in law over the brakes!?!) etc - I can't even remember half of them, to be honest.

I would say though that there's not much a good old Maclaren Techno doesn't do. So easy to fold, smart looking, suitable from birth, footmuff etc included, you dont have to spend a fortune to get all the great features you need or want - just to prove a smuggo Bugaboo owner can see the value of other pushchairs too!

One final point - I think you are allowed to hate Bugaboos without being jealous. I hate Garden gnomes. I can afford to buy many garden gnomes. But if I slag off garden gnomes, its not because I am jealous and want to own a garden gnome.

"Introducing Bugaboo
Bugaboo pushchairs came to prominence in the UK when film star and celebrity Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted out with her first baby, Apple, in a Bugaboo Frog pushchair.

Awareness of the brand rocketed and Bugaboo is now one of the most instantly recognisable buggy brands on the high street."
From Which? website

'When I went to the park and saw four Bugaboo Frogs, I knew this was the right sort of area for us," said an acquaintance recently in a particularly child-friendly part of north London, pushing back his designer glasses and sipping on his latte. His companions nodded, understanding that owning this brand of pushchair was shorthand for a certain sort of style-conscious parent.

He's not the only fan of the Dutch-built buggy with its distinctive swirl logo. What was once the must-have baby accessory for extravagant celebrities has become an essential piece of kit for parents everywhere. The Frog is the buggy that conquered Britain. Sales in John Lewis are up by 130 per cent in the past 12 months; since its introduction to Britain in 2003, sales have doubled each year."

Daily Telegraph

Smug latte drinker proving my point...

The Maclaren has been going longer than the Beckhams, the BugaBoo not so, think Gwyneth's daughter is about 7 -you may not have known Imarriedafrog, but John Lewis did I reckon. But you're absolutely right, I should grow up about it. Don't worry though, I hate lots of other things too!

"pushing back his designer glasses and sipping on his latte. His companions nodded, understanding that owning this brand of pushchair was shorthand for a certain sort of style-conscious parent"

Lololololol!

bibbitybobbityhat · 18/05/2010 22:08

Oh right I've got you now.

My last dc was born in 2003 so all these new puschairs are a mystery to me, but I must say I have often wondered why there were so many fugly pushchairs with teeny tiny front wheels around nowadays .

And I don't like those ones where one of the babies has to sit underneath in the shopping compartment either.

withorwithoutyou · 18/05/2010 22:10

Can't tell if scottishmummy is pulling your leg OP or genuinely rattled that you don't like her pram.

PosyPetrovaPauline · 18/05/2010 22:10

it is the smoothest - easiest to push most versatile comfortable pram there is

bugaboo is the best pram

let's draw a line under this thread

ginhag · 18/05/2010 22:11

I hate latte. Really hate it. I have no idea where that leaves me in this debate.

madmissy · 18/05/2010 22:11

scottishmummy · 18/05/2010 22:13

superv1xen · 18/05/2010 22:13

i have a bugaboo cameleon.

its bright pink.

i LOVE it.

i also have highlighted blonde hair and my changing bag is not cath kidston but paul frank. i don't wear birkenstocks though, i prefer havaianas in the casual summer shoe stakes.

i would be flattered if someone thought i was some kind of stereotypical bugaboo owner.

sungirltan · 18/05/2010 22:13

in that case madmissy i should be adding...well many many things to my smugness!

moominmarvellous · 18/05/2010 22:13

I bought a Bugaboo cameleon tonight in fact! I've been pushing it around my living room - it's great!

I had a Quinny Buzz before and this is so much more lightweight - it has alot of the same features, but all the things I hated about the Quinny, are better on the Bugaboo.

One thing though - they are v expensive, so I bought mine secondhand from ebay. It's hardly been used and I got exactly what I wanted, for £250 less, with extras worth another £200.

I AM smug. I am Smuggy McSmuggerson from Smugsville (and a bit of a tightarse!)
