My Grandmother had 10 starting at 21 right up to 46 when she had my mother! she had 3 in her forties.I had my three in my twenties ,25 then twins at 28, that was best for me as 42 now and don,t think my energy levels would sustain tho that might just be having teenagers. Do teenagers and babies mix ??

I had late teenage children when DS2 was born- in fact they were both at University. Had no problems with broken nights etc, coped with it all until I hit the big 50. Now in my late fifties the mother of a 15 year old it is a whole new ball game!

My mother in law was 48 when she her last, My gran was 47 . My aunt said it was like having a granny for a mum. My in laws said nothing, it didn't bother them. Its up to the person.

I was at antenatal class and got chatting to someone. She was talking about stat maternity pay and i said 'oh, how long have you been at work?" To which she replied 'only a few months, since i left school' So i said 'blimey, how old are you then?'

'17. How old are you?'

'37' I said. (This was 3 years ago..)

And here it comes...

'Shit, you're a year older than my mum.'

I've had another since then.

my sister reminded me that my gran (90 years old now ) had my aunt when she was 50ish -aunt 41ish is 2 years older than my older sister from what i can remember she was full of energy and my aunt was not an easy teenager which made me give myself a cut off point when to stop having anymore babies and for selffish reasons as well i would like to go on a round the world trip when im 55 and my youngest would be 20 by then dreams dreams

Poor woman with two pregnant teenagers [shudder]

I had my first at 31 and my mum kept telling me I was an older mother, because when she had had my brother aged 30 in the 70s she was refered to as elderley I just nodded and ignored her.

I was 36 when I had no2, and when I referred to being old to the midwife she told me not to be silly and she saw much older mothers these days. I definitely noticed the difference in terms of how hard the pregnancy was 5 years older though.

I had dd1 at 27
ds1 at 39
dd2 at 46

Dread people assumimg I am dd2s granny. It hasn't happened yet but that and a 22 year old daughter definately makes me make more effort with my appearance.

phdlife · 16/05/2010 11:50

When I was 37 I had an obstetrician say there was no way I could go to an MLU, because I was "an elderly case of prima gravida"!

Not just "older", ladies, "elderly"!

gypsymummy · 16/05/2010 12:07

Actually my midwife when i had DS1 at 37 and DS 2 at 39 was so much dismissive of the term older mum and thought it was a load of nonsense.

ageing5yearseachyear · 16/05/2010 12:17

do babies and teenagers mix?

my dds are 15, 12 and 2.

the 2 year old reminds me why we bothered having them in the first place

i was 27, 29 and 39 when i had mine- 39 was def too old to have a baby but now she is 2 and a bit and i am 42 i dont feel to old to have a toddler.

weird but true.

nobody referred to me as an older mum until it all went tits up in labour and consultant told me i was lucky to get away with it at my age

headlessandclueless · 16/05/2010 15:14

why is this something that isso difficult for people to cope with? biologically speaking, our bodies are capable of reproducig once we start our periods. giving a few years grace to grow up a bit more, means that we should be perfectly fine to reproduce from around 16 or so, assuming menarche at 13. from that pov, waiting another twenty odd years before actually reproducing is elderly.
that doesnt mean thta i think everyone should be encouraged to have babies at 16, i'm just trying to state why people shouldnt be so surprised at being told that they are elderly prima gravida when in their late thirties.

bruffin · 16/05/2010 15:58

I know someone who was 32 and trying to adopt. She was told she couldn't have a baby as most of the babies up for adoption were from mothers who were in their teens and it would be like giving the baby to a grandmother
