I heard him being interviewed this morning on the Today programme.

Firstly, it turns out he's not racist or against immigration! Apparently, he says it's ok for French people to come here (there's not that many that want to so its ok). AND he says that Irish people can come here too because they're really all British! So that's nice. I was a bit confused because I thought they'd spent all those years bombing us because they didn't want to be British but I guess I've got that all wrong.

He's not going to let Algerian asylum seekers come though, but I don't think it matters because they'll just get killed where they are in their own country so that won't be a problem for them much longer.

And the best thing is... he's going to give £50,000 to anyone who's not "pure British" to leave the country and go back to where they came from! How cool is that! So I'm now deciding whether to go back to my Great-Grandmother's origins in Russia, or my Great Grandfather's in Finland. Now, apparently this money is going to come from what he called stupid anti-Climate Change projects so although much of Russia and pretty much all of Finland is a bit chilly, as the climate changes because they money is being spent on me, they'll get warmer and I'll be all toasty!

And DP, regarding the poem, it's not just about killing - You are missing the point - and, I suspect, quite deliberately, to divert the argument, as you are doing over and over again. It's about total disenfranchisement of sections of humanity who have EVERY right to live our lives as we choose. It's about your children not being able to choose whom to love, without fear of disapproval, harassment or imprisonment. It's about choosing how to worship - or not to worship at all. It's about YOU, as a woman and as a HUMAN BEING, being free to live your life, make your choices, govern your own morality, live where and with whom you wish.

Under the BNP I would be shipped 'home' to a country I barely know, where I do not speak the languages, despite being born in England, having a half English DD and a Welsh partner and having loved and worked for Britain and British culture, all my 52 years. £50,000 would never compensate me for the loss of a country I love. My DD, (who is voting for the first time and jokes that she might vote BNP because she might get deported somewhere warm, or at least be a boatperson as she's only half white British), would be a 'mongrel breed'. An insult to a fine, talented young girl. My ex-husband or current partner, both white (I won't say 'pure', because, what's 'pure'?) would - in an extreme fascist regime (and who's to guarantee the BNP would not become extreme?)- face disciplinary action or worse, for having touched me. Yes, DP, these things would not happen immediately - but give them an inch. The Nazi extremes came on gradually. That's the WHOLE POINT of the poem.

And they WOULD come for you, eventually.

Thank you DP. You see, it's not that anyone hates you. If we did, we wouldn't bother to engage with you. It's the beliefs you put forward, the defence of the indefencible, that we deplore. You yourself, may be a person we would chat quite happily with in the street, have a laugh with, away from politics.

Remember, in any extremist regime, there are nice, inherently good people, who get sucked in. There were decent people in the Nazi regime, people who loved their families and friends, who had Jewish friends, but who eventually condoned unbelievable horror, or denied that it was happening because their consciences couldn't take it. Ditto in every other extreme regime in history (you're Irish, you must know this with your own history). I've seen this in my own country of origin, Sri Lanka. My mother's race and my father's race have both committed acts of terror on each other (you see, I come of a 'mixed race' family myself, though the colour is the same!

There was an excellent play about 25 years ago, called 'Good', about a good man who gets drawn imperceptibly deeper into nazism in the '30s, and ends up doing unspeakable things that he would never have contemplated in the beginning. It's worth reading, DP, brilliant writing about a decent human being getting out of his depth. It showed that it could happen to any of us, ANY OF US, and I personally am engaging with you, because I wouldn't want it to happen to you.
