In thinking that people with faith or religion are deluded?

This stems from another couple of threads i'm on but until God can be proven isn't religion just an outdated patriachal method of control?

OP posts:

I know, right? So good! I vote for Spike's "Rest In Peace" as the best song. What say you, Goblin King?

Tinnitus · 25/04/2010 02:08

JarethTheGoblinKing

Perhaps you should check my profile and decide if "darling" was an appropriate epithet, I'm not saying i'm not flattered but it was quite unexpected.

I'm going out on a limb here and guessing that in as much as you have thought it through, you object to the word delusional, so I thought I give you a hand.

deluded
? adjective having a mistaken belief; misguided.

If you can think of a better word for the OP to use, let us know. If not, here is another word you might consider.

apologize
(also apologise)

? verb express regret for something that one has done wrong.

CheerfulYank · 25/04/2010 02:11

Tinnitus, you darling you! ;)

Remains of the Day is fantastic, no?

Tinnitus · 25/04/2010 02:25

Sadly, my milkshake seems to bring all the boys to the yard.

Remains of the day is great but you're wrong about "let me rest in peace". The song Willows girlfriend sings in the park is the best one.

If you like Spikes song, check out James Marsters solo stuff or Ghost of the robot, I think you'll like it.

CheerfulYank · 25/04/2010 02:29

"Damn right, it's betta than yo's.."

I totally disagree about the song thing! But totally. Of course it could have something to do w/my mad crush on Spike...

padraig · 25/04/2010 02:37

As an athiest, I fully accept the possibility that I'm wrong and that there might be a god or a creator or whatever.

As Socrates said, the only thing I know is that I know nothing.

I draw comfort in the fact that no-one else knows either

kimbles1984 · 25/04/2010 05:03

yanbu! as far as i am concerned god does not exist until proven otherwise! i am considering taking my children out of their catholic school that they love very much for this very reason!...i would love to have faith, you know, the totally believe without doubt faith! but i just cannott, intelligent thought will not let me believe....i would dearly love to be proven very wrong..

kimbles1984 · 25/04/2010 05:04

*cannot

piscesmoon · 25/04/2010 08:01

The Communists tried to get rid of all religious faith and failed dismally. People will always be split into those who have to have proof before they believe anything and those who just have faith.
I don't see why you have to see something to believe in it.
I never see why someone makes up their own mind on something and then has to justify it by saying 'I am right-you are all idiots not to think the same!' I am very pleased that we don't all follow like sheep and some people will always refuse to think that one person has all the answers. OP is quite entitled to her opinion but completely unreasonable to think that everyone will agree. Anyone too rigidly one way or the other makes me want to do the opposite.

ooojimaflip · 25/04/2010 08:44

Piscesmoon - obviously you can believe whatever you like - there is no way I can control your mental state, and nor would I want to (other than through persuasion). You can't expect me to accept or value those beliefs (beyond the normal social contract of poilteness) if you cannot support them.

porcamiseria · 25/04/2010 09:36

why do the atheists thinks its OK to be so rude and dismissive of those with faith? I dont see religious people being so rude about the atheists. ffs

DuelingFanjo · 25/04/2010 09:56

"why do the atheists thinks its OK to be so rude and dismissive of those with faith? I dont see religious people being so rude about the atheists. ffs"

you mean 'some Atheists' of course?

There are plenty of posts in this thread where a Christian has been extremely rude about Atheists!

dueling I mean in the past few days on here.....some lovely atheists off MN I am sure

ooojimaflip · 25/04/2010 10:39

I am never rude. Well, not unless it's funny. Or I'm really pissed off.

OK, I'm GENERALLY not rude.

Anyway, I don't respect faith. I do respect people of faith. Because of the people bit.

tapas · 25/04/2010 10:41

*It's got a lot to do with me if they get into wars about it!

I'm rather affected by people who bomb planes, trains and buses. Rape small children, deny women education. Mutilate genitalia all in the name of God!*

OP - Obviously you mean Islam here. I feel a lot of people{especially on this forum} don't understand that particular religion.

First off - It's not a religion. It is a complete way of life. It has laws on almost every aspect of it's adherents life.

I suggest the OP gets off her ass and researchs it. Maybe speak to afew muslims?!
It will help you to differentiate the differences between culture and the religious obligations - a lot of Muslims mix and match. This can obviously confuse those not familiar with Islam.

In the last few weeks I have heard many people question specific actions in Islam. For eg. circumcsion, niqab/burkha/stoning.

The reason BILLIONS of muslims worldwide believe{and practice} in these concepts is because the are convinced Islam is the truth.

FYI many westerners convert to Islam every single day. It is not just a way of life for 'foreigners' but for all of mankind.

gorionine · 25/04/2010 10:43

I am a Muslim, My mum is a Roman Catholic and My dad is an Atheist, with a bit of respect for eachother there is no reason for any of us to think the others are deluded.

ooojimaflip · 25/04/2010 10:45

Gorionine - on the other hand you can't all be right either.

EggyAllenPoe · 25/04/2010 10:48

in answer to OP, well, religion just isn't correct - there is no God, or, in the case of Buddhism, no nirvana to strive towards. so, not exactly deluded, but perhaps, a bit of a waste of time?

ooojimaflip · 25/04/2010 10:48

Tapas - I think most religons would claim to be a whole way of life. As to the difference between cultural and religous customs - if someone believed they do something for religous reasons, then they DO do it for religous reasons. The fact that it may not be defined as such by whatever scripture they purport to adhere to is pretty unimportant.

You are not unreasonable. I attended a church ceremony the other day and thought, "how can any reaosonable person believe this nonsense?"

Riven - the god bit isn't necessery for the be nice to people bit though.

ooojimaflip · 25/04/2010 10:58

Riven - I don't see Marantha doing anything other than saying what she felt about something. That's perfectly compatible with live and let live.
