In thinking that people with faith or religion are deluded?

This stems from another couple of threads i'm on but until God can be proven isn't religion just an outdated patriachal method of control?

Um, I don't spend my days dreading death - I find it an awful lot LESS intimidating since I realised I couldn't actually believe in God/Heaven/any other occult concept

and I try really quite hard to be a decent person, look after others and do the right thing - I don't need a "faith" or the promise of a big icecream place in heaven to motivate me to do that

odd that Christians/people of faith often assume that common human decency is specific to them.

Glitterandglue · 24/04/2010 21:22

I think people who believe that they know for certain whether a god or gods exist, or where we came from, or whether this is all a dream etc, are deluded.

Most people are just guessing. Belief is about that, and that includes the belief that god/gods aren't real.

For what it's worth, I don't believe in any god or higher power or guiding force or whatnot. But I could be wrong.

Tether - I hate to let you down, but Narnia was written by C S Lewis, and the characters of the book were played by actors. Fiction, much along the same lines as holy books..

YANBU.

Alouiseg · 24/04/2010 21:23

It's got a lot to do with me if they get into wars about it!

I'm rather affected by people who bomb planes, trains and buses. Rape small children, deny women education. Mutilate genitalia all in the name of God!

FFS - just live and let live - does my faith actually impact on your in any shape or form? No - then bog off

Hate to tell you OP, but America is secular (separation of church and state), and it doesn't stop the arguing, the fighting etc...

toccatanfudge · 24/04/2010 21:27

Riven - I'll come with you as well

you see funnily enough Riven and I should apparently hate each other as we have different faiths...............

but she knows fab places to have lunch in Bristol

actually - totally ott - thinking I may come down to Bristol for a day or 2 in the may half term.

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 24/04/2010 21:28

I'm also rather at the lack of utter condemnation from any religion of the horrific things carried out in the name of whichever God it happens to be that day. We may get a small press release, but on the whole it appears to be a limp wringing of hands and not much else.

BitOfFun · 24/04/2010 21:28

People on Mumsnet certainly seem to talk about rectal probing a lot- surely they can't all believe in aliens?

Also, religion and faith are two different things entirely. Most (if not all) religions are about following guidelines, with the threat of at the very least disapproval from your peers if you choose not to follow those guidelines.

Faith is about belief. You clearly have faith in the idea that there is no god.

Do I think religions cause a lot of shit? Yes, undoubtedly. But that doesn't mean they are all bad, and they should all be abolished/abandoned. There are plenty of corrupt police officers but I don't think that means the police force should be abolished.

As much as you get x, y, z done in the name of religion and it's wrong, you also get lots of good things, like friendship, aid for those in need etc.

thumbwitch · 24/04/2010 21:30

you can think what you like but not everyone else has to agree with you.

frasersmummy · 24/04/2010 21:30

op... You will find people with faith in God or who are religous do not

"bomb planes, trains and buses. Rape small children, deny women education or Mutilate genitalia "

these people are NUTTERS

THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE

MamaMary · 24/04/2010 21:30

Didn't say being atheist was comparable to being part of a religion.

All I said was it is a belief - and you earlier claimed that you weren't supposed to believe or accept.

Denying that there is no God is imo a very, very strong statement - a stronger belief even than many beliefs that religious people sign up to.
