Carmen - well put.

hf128219 · 23/04/2010 11:37

Carmen - 'It also underlines that the only suitable role for a female in the services is as a cheerleader for her big brave hubby and something warm and easily fuckable to come home to.'

What a load of tosh. Females perform better in many roles in the Services than men - there are many roles for them.

Did you serve and get discharged?

redredruby · 23/04/2010 11:37

What I think is particularly revealing is that after nearly 60 pages of debate some posters are still suggesting that the objections initiate from a ?problem with nudity? and fail to recognise that it is the context of that nudity and the way it is used both within our current society and within this calendar that is the source of the objections!

curryfreak · 23/04/2010 11:39

It's vile. i could'nt give a shit about helping 'our heroes" It's an illegal war.

RedRedWine1980 · 23/04/2010 11:40

Thats what ive been trying to explain to hf redredruby but it seems some people skim read what suits them.

OP posts:
JaneS · 23/04/2010 11:42

hf, I think you misunderstand. Of course females perform better in many roles in the Services for men. Of course there are many roles for them. That is precisely why it is insulting to these women to make a calendar like this, which suggests the opposite.

redredruby · 23/04/2010 12:07

i know you have, repeatedly, redredwine - your stamina in this debate is far higher than mine!!

RedRedWine1980 · 23/04/2010 12:10

Well its this or coursework PMSL- im going to have on my headstone procrastination is the thief of time pmsl

OP posts:
JaneS · 23/04/2010 12:12

Oh, RRW, that's brilliant! I too am avoiding coursework - I am highly amused that I've been assuming all along you were a high-minded debater with no other agenda (er ... as you are, of course!), bravely devoting your time to all of this.

hf128219 · 23/04/2010 12:16

I must leave this 'high-minded' debate' Have got to polish dh's Claymore.

RedRedWine1980 · 23/04/2010 12:18

Leaks a little bit of wee at LRD

OP posts:
RedRedWine1980 · 23/04/2010 12:19

But not on LRD- tha would be a whole new calendar

OP posts:
JaneS · 23/04/2010 12:20

You know, I think that's my first wee-leakage on MN! Yay!

The fact that many people, including cupcake, thought there was something "off" about the image, without knowing why, speaks volumes to me.

Erm, I do know why I found it a bit off and I said as much; because it portrayed two women as prisoners/being kept under guard. I just said that I wasn't reading so much into it to make correlations with the dog thing.

To the poster who asked why no-one could answer how this was going to help the problem of sexual harrassment within the forces; wouldn't it be better to educate the men in the armed forces that sexual harrassment of their femaile counterparts is wrong? Plenty of men are able to look at semi-nude/nude women without going on to make a downright nuisance of themselves in the workplace.

RRW not all men judge women on their boob size/up-for-it-ness. My male friends have told me that they think I'm attractive for my brains/humour rather than what I look like. And I have big boobs and I'm fairly attractive. I don't feel like I'm constantly judged on my looks or tits.

RedRedWine1980 · 23/04/2010 12:27

So you think men looking at this calendar/page 3 girls are thinking 'what an intelligent strong minded person she looks' Nope they are thinking of their tits and ass love.

That wasn't me, but I think you are completely right that educating people is really important. But I also think it's a bit chicken-and-egg: if you educated people to treat each other with more respect, I don't think images like those on the calendar would have a public; if you speak out against images like these, you may educate people in doing so.

cupcakesandbunting · 23/04/2010 12:31

No RRW. I am trying to say that not ALL men look at page 3 "stunnas" and think anything more than "oh, pair of tits". I don't think that this calendar is assisting in any increase in sexual harrassment in the armed forces and it's unfair to say otherwise.

RedRedWine1980 · 23/04/2010 12:34

It increases sexual harrasment/chauvinism (sp) full stop to me- the more women who insist getting naked for whatever reason is fine the more men think thats all we are good for- vicous circle really.

OP posts:
cupcakesandbunting · 23/04/2010 12:37

LRDD I do see your point but I think that sexual harrassment has more to do with the mindset of the harraser than the harrassed. Lots of men look at porn that would make most of our eyes bleed in repulsion but they don't go on to sexually harrass female work colleagues. Suggesting that we effectively ban any material sexualising women is suggesting a damn near impossibility. Men who harrass women need to learn respect. Some men can admire the female form with being letches.

I think

JaneS · 23/04/2010 12:41

'LRDD I do see your point but I think that sexual harrassment has more to do with the mindset of the harraser than the harrassed.'

Hell yes! I certainly didn't mean to suggest otherwise.

JaneS · 23/04/2010 12:42

(Ooh, I am chuffed: I've just checked my word count and I've written just over 2,500 words on my dissertation this morning. Clearly MN is good for work.)

RedRedWine1980 · 23/04/2010 12:54

Hahahaha its certainly food for thought!

OP posts:
cupcakesandbunting · 23/04/2010 12:58

MN very bad for housework though. My living room looks like it's been fucking burgled by a band of chimps

JaneS · 23/04/2010 13:07

Ah, cupcakes, mine normally looks like that.

Should probably take myself off to the library however ...

SolidGoldBrass · 23/04/2010 13:59

Actually, one of the reasons why calendars like this keep being produced and sold is because an awful lot of people have mild to moderate exhibitionist tendencies. Most people like the idea of being percieved as desirable and sexually attractive.
But because we livein a sex-hating culture, we are constantly told not to display ourselves. Look at the comments on here 'vacant slappers' etc. Performing in porn is a stigmatized choice, but doing 'tasteful' poses for charity is much less so, it's 'one bit of naughtiness' etc so therefore appealing to lots of people.
I still think it's a good thing not a bad one, more willing seuxal display should mean less coercive sexual display. And it's perfectly possible to be exhibitionistic and into hedonistic sex and a brain surgeon, just as it;s possible to be thick and have a low libido and a prudish mindset.
