And I would not be happy if my dd did it, but none of the women in it are my dd, and they all look happy enough with their decision.

RedRedWine1980 · 22/04/2010 18:15

I 110% agree Smallwhitecat

smallwhitecat you are of course entitled to your opinion. But to call people idiots is insulting too.

I think it is sexist, there is no doubt about that. But is sexist always a bad thing? As someone else said, there are always women who are happy to do this sort of thing, and are NOT coerced into it, and men who like looking at it.

I dont think you can judge this calendar by the same arguments as commercial porn. Its far more innocent, as well as being non commercial.

Similar stuff has been available since photography was invented.

luciemule · 22/04/2010 18:30

I'm definitely not an idiot - I would you details about my degree but that would be pedantic.
In a debate - which this kind of was smallwhitecat- insulting people who have a different opinion than yourself actually makes your own opinion a weaker one.

fire fighters calendar raising money for charity

RedRedWine1980 · 22/04/2010 18:37

My mother bought me a firefighters calender a few years back- wasnt impressed at all, was more happy with my Jacko calender last christmas

Yes - I can't stand looking at rippling abs - makes me go squeamish. However, just trying to point out that this is a well respected occupation and yet, they have chosen to let women/men oggle at their semi naked bodies to raise money for charity.

LittleSilver · 22/04/2010 18:45

Wel,, I'm an army wife and I don't find it any less objectionable

RedRedWine1980 · 22/04/2010 18:45

Semi naked though- this calender has no semi about it- in some shots you can nearly see their breakfast. And the Garrison Girls one you could even see nipples- hardly a cheeky glimpse

As a SWAG myself, I wish I had a nice enough bum to do something like this, but as I don't I'll resort to standing outside the camp gates jingling a bucket - I know which looks like more fun! (it's the calender BTW).

The girls in the calender don't look like they feel bad doing it, it's just a bit of fun that has raised a lot of money for a good cause.

actually I don't have a problem with this calendar. And I regard myself as a fairly vocal feminist.

there are equivalent male calendars.

the women are clearly willing participants.

at least they aren't emaciated models, teenyboppers, airbrushed beyond recognition, or in pornographic poses. unlike many competing calendars.

scaryteacher · 22/04/2010 19:37

We could do an officers wives calendar perhaps?
Army girls in pearls and alice bands, Navy types in pearls and deck shoes; wobbly bits to the fore? Do you think people would pay not to put it up?

scaryteacher · 22/04/2010 19:37

Don't know what the RAF would wear, pearls and a flying jacket?

Joolyjoolyjoo · 22/04/2010 19:40

Or we could do "the true forces wives" calendar- have us in our old jimjams and furry slippers, mumsnetting for hours on end while our OHs are out of sight!

sungirltan · 22/04/2010 19:48

op - yadnbu. i'd dissaprove less if it listed the professions of all the ladies involved underneath the photos or at least something that identifies them as intelligent individuals, not the homogenous lump that 'army wives' are regarded as by dh (ex army but still ta and his chums)

and fwiw ex dp (still in the army) would have been horrified i've i'd done similar, charity or not

EricPicklesFatNeck · 22/04/2010 20:02

no one needs to buy the calendar now they can all spank one off in the comfort of their own home on teh daily mail website. lovely

5DollarShake · 22/04/2010 20:07

I don't think it's vile. But it is depressing. Not the raising money bit of course, but the inherent sexism, and the fact that so many women (as evidenced by this thread) wish to defend that sexism.

I also find the terms WAGs/SWAGs mind-numblingly depressing. As sungirltan says - just a homogeneous lump, defined by their attachment to a man, and not on their own individual qualities and merits.

We've come such a long way, haven't we...?
