Money raising or not- urghh, just urrrghh.

Exactly Jooly, I'd flash mine to save dbs and dhs.

Scurry, if they'd listed their degrees etc would that make it more acceptable?

scurryfunge · 22/04/2010 15:09

Exactly.....nobody has disputed on the thread that the cause is worthy and that money is needed. The debate was about why women still feel they have to do this to pander to mens' wants...it is very sad that people are putting themselves in such a position because "it's for a good cause". The earlier threads last night explored this.
Badger baiting is a good money raiser too, though I wouldn't do it if the cause was good

thumbwitch · 22/04/2010 15:12

But badgers can't volunteer for baiting so that argument is spurious.

scurryfunge · 22/04/2010 15:17

Maybe not a great example but it illustrates the point that dubious practices should not be excused if "it's all in a good cause"

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 22/04/2010 15:21

"So,Princess, we pull out of Afghanistan, the Taleban takes over, women are back to being treated as second class citizens, no education, not allowed out without a male member of their family; summary executions are resumed after Friday prayers; and the Taleban forge into Pakistan and all hell lets loose; what would you expect our Armed Forces to do then?

I recall thousands of innocent civilians being killed in the Twin Towers ... which is what started all this. Perhaps you have a short term memory."

Well said, scaryteacher - this is the point I was trying to make earlier, when I talked about the Taliban and other extremists ^, MorrisZapp.

My BIL has done two tours in Afghanistan, and at the moment, works at equipping soldiers, so knows men and women who are out there now. He visits his army friends' families to see if he can help them whilst their husbands are posted in Afghanistan, and fears that it is only a matter of time before someone he knows comes home in a coffin. He's seen the coffins come home, and seen injured service personnel and civilians - including children injured by soviet mines disguised as toys - shall we abandon them, princessparty?

If things go as he plans, my ds1 could be in the Forces in a couple of years time, and I will be as proud of him as I am of BIL. I wouldn't get my kit off for a calendar like the one in this thread - but a calendar with me nekkid on it would cause widespread nausea, and would not raise £26K. But I don't see anything wrong with what these wives have done. And no, I wouldn't display it in my home - but I bought the WI calendar, even though I wouldn't display that either. I think you can applaud the sentiment and the reasons behind the calendar's production whilst not displaying it.

scurryfunge · 22/04/2010 15:25

I could set up charity where people donate not to have me strip....I'd raise thousands

CarmenSanDiego · 22/04/2010 15:27

Most of the pro-calendar posts seem to be suggesting the ends always justify the means. That really is nonsense. If a woman was standing in a pub, offering people a flash or a quick feel for a fiver, would you really say she was heroic and brave and pulling it together for the lads? I doubt it.

Calendar is awful. Tacky, cheap, horrible images. The alsation picture made me think of nazis (the armband and hat really didn't help).

I don't see it as particularly sexual or exciting either, just degrading. Too many naked bums, submissive poses, cream/foam splashed over backsides and bent overness.

Why can't these women actually use their brains and write to those who matter, campaign to get their voice heard and demand proper compensation? 26k isn't much in government terms. It's the price of ONE admin person's salary. With sensible campaigning they could probably get a lot more than this.

But no, easier to go for a tits-out jolly that sends us back to the nineteen seventies and lots of Daily Mail shouting about 'our lads.'

thumbwitch · 22/04/2010 15:30

Do you really think, Carmen, that people haven't tried the other routes to get compensation? Do you really think that H4H and SSAFA and all the other bodies who have to raise money want to do it in the absence of proper Govt compensation?

Joolyjoolyjoo · 22/04/2010 15:36

carmen- how do you know that behind the scenes these women (and many more like them, and men too) are NOT campaigning and writing to those who matter? Very naive to think that there aren't already wives/ husbands/ mothers/ fathers petitioning the government in this way!

How long do you think this push for change will take? How much do you realistically think they will raise with "sensible" campaigning? How many men and women will die in that time due to lack of funds? Yes, longterm there needs to be a way of ensuring our forces are properly treated, but in the meantime they have cashed in on an easy market to raise some pretty instant funds.

CarmenSanDiego · 22/04/2010 15:41

Because this actually has the potential to stop those who can help from actually taking them seriously.

There are other less controversial/offensive/degrading ways to raise this much money and more. Sponsorships, events etc. etc.

scaryteacher · 22/04/2010 15:42

They are 'our lads' Carmen (and lasses) and very much so for some of us.

There have been campaigning and letters, and that is why H4H started, to DO something about the lack of care for those injured in battle; to help with their rehab. Even the sunset ceremony done in London, which Clarkson compered and the Princes attended and was broadcast on TV, didn't shame the Government into doing anything more.

Nice to see you have a Lordling Thumb - I have an imperial smallness, who now towers over me and is 15 this year. It seems like yesterday that he was all small, sweet smelling and snuggly. What a difference!

scaryteacher · 22/04/2010 15:49

Yes Carmen, and over £47 million has been raised to date, £34 million distributed and used and another £20 million is needed for the new PRCs.

There are bike rides from Brussels to Arnhem; walks across Salisbury Plain and other things going on as well that raise lots of money; the Forces will be doing things themselves as well.

It is appalling that the general public have had to raise this money to fill the gap left by the Government and which they have consistently and cynically refused to fill.

Mumcentreplus · 22/04/2010 15:53

unimaginative tat...

CarmenSanDiego · 22/04/2010 16:07

Well if 47 million has been raised to date, this 26k is like 0.06% of that (if my maths is right). It really is the woman in the pub getting her tits out for a fiver.

Embarrassing, degrading and attention grabbing for all the wrong reasons.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 22/04/2010 16:17

"embarassing, degrading and attention grabbing for all the wrong reasons"

Yes, maybe- but it has grabbed attention, hasn't it? Unlike the bike rides and walks etc that scaryteacher mentions- don't see many threads about them in active convos! And that attention, bad or good, brings it home to the general public that the Government is NOT doing all it needs to to support the troops IT has sent into danger. Whatever you think about the women who did it, or the tastefulness of the calendar, you are now aware just how desperate the Forces families are to rise the money- job done!

Woman flashing her tits for a fiver in the pub may well get more money than someone creeping around the same pub quietly with a collection tin! And more people will notice her!

thumbwitch · 22/04/2010 16:22

She'll probably get more money than the Royal British Legion do as well, another charity supporting Service and Ex-Service people. Especially as there seems to be some sort of dodgy PC move against wearing the poppy in protest against the validity of the current campaigns the UK is involved in.

seeker · 22/04/2010 16:27

Would all the people who support this calendar be happy for a photograph of their naked 18 year old daughter about to be raped by an alsatian dog to be up on a total stranger's wall?

And if not, why not?

scaryteacher · 22/04/2010 16:32

The dog was off and to the right, with the lady holding the lead between and away from the dog and the girls up against the fence. The girl with the dog was pretending to be a military policewoman, not a Nazi. You an tell that from the MP arm band and the red cap cover.

How do you know the dog was male? The dog may have been a bitch. I saw nothing in that photo to suggest that the dog was about to rape anything.

WebDude · 22/04/2010 16:33

Think the Daily Mail "spoiler" is bad. Placing as many photos online only serves to limit sales, IMO.

Seems silly to consider replacing Trident when a billion pounds (or more) could be set aside to provide compensation. Of course it was an unwanted war, and while I support the troops, wish they weren't in harms way by being there.

scaryteacher · 22/04/2010 16:33

Sorry, brain working faster than fingers; the girl handling the dog was between the dog and the girls and well away from them as well.

seeker · 22/04/2010 16:35

OK, scaryteacher - remove the tasteless dog image from the equation.

Would you be happy for a picture of your naked teenage daughter to be up on a total stranger's wall?

Joolyjoolyjoo · 22/04/2010 16:35

If my 18 yr old daughter decided to do a calendar like this, I would trust her judgement. I haven't actually seen the picture you are talking about, but I'm assuming that the nudity is not blatant and that the intentions of the dog are not known.

Would all the people who are vehemently opposed to this calendar be happy for their 18 year old son to be sent to the front line without the necessary equipment and medical care? And if not, what would you do about it, being as it is that 18 year olds are adults and can do as they choose?

seeker · 22/04/2010 16:38

Jooly - no I wouldn't. But two wrongs, as they say....

WebDude · 22/04/2010 16:43

Whoever mentioned Nazi... clear from the text "Redcap Sarah keeps intruders Kelly and Rachel under guard" that it wasn't a Nazi.

As a bloke, they're bound to 'get my attention' - but there's less displayed than one might see on some sunny beaches around Europe, and apart from the odd splinter (yeeooww!) I think they've just done a cheery calendar showing off some sexy bottoms!

seeker · 22/04/2010 16:47

So OK if your teenage daughter was posing like this?
