There are a couple of things that make me (as a navy wife) uncomfortable with this.
The first is that there is the need for the wives to raise money at all. It really is pretty shocking sometimes the way the forces are treated contrasted to the high demands made of them. Am very at the poster (princessparty?) who seems to think they are worthless. As for the "well, they knew what they were getting into", it's a big leap between starting a job aged 16 and realising what it actually entails. When the firemen went on strike over pay and conditions, the forces stepped into the breach, getting paid far less. It makes me really sad that people don't appreciate the forces- too much taken for granted, because they CAN'T strike, need to give a year's notice and most genuinely are commited to the work they do. It seems to me that the Government are also guilty of taking them for granted, hence the disgraceful need to raise money this way.
My second gripe is that our society deems this the best way to make money. Say what you like about these women "demeaning" themselves- I don't think they are, but that's not the point- the fact is that they would NOT have been able to raise money as quickly and effectively any other way. That's because of the society we live in, where (as MorrisZapp said) celebrity culture rules. Some of those girls could be brain surgeons but society wouldn't be interested in that. It pains me that the best renumerated people in the UK are the sad airheads who litter the pages of thousands of crass 'sleb mags- I would honestly rather my children saw this calendar and understood what these women are trying to achieve than started reading that crap!
I think good for these women in doing something to raise the money necessary. I think it's bad that raising funds this way is necessary or that this should be the most expedious and surefire way to raise it
