I take it you wouldn't because its not just 'nudity' its actually pretty sordid- I know for a fact I wouldnt want my kids seeing it. Its rather hypocritical to say 'yes its fine because its raising money, but I wouldnt have it in my kitchen...'

Good for them

luciemule · 22/04/2010 13:46

No it's not hypocritical. I don't like it because it wouldn't fit in with my lovely vintage decor . I undertsand what you're saying RRW and unlike anybody else who is pro-calendar, I actually think your point is valid (doesn't mean I agree, just that you are entitled to have your opinion). However, I am saying that I don't think it's appropriate to have in the kitchen, just as I wouldn't put up a page 3 calendar, but I do think it was fab and very easy way to raise money for a very needy charity. I just think that you're not going to convert army wives into thinking it's wrong and makes them feel rather awful when you used the word vile. Perhaps if you had said 'inappropriate' for example, you would have got more support towards your view.

Seeker's comments on this thread are terrific.

RedRedWine1980 · 22/04/2010 13:51

I dont think its 'inappropriate' though I actually do think vile- esepcially as its promoted along with 'well its for charity so leaning up against a fence with an alsation behind your naked ass is just fine darling...'

Im all for supporting our service men and women but there are better more appropriate and constructive ways.

OP posts:
luciemule · 22/04/2010 13:53

so how would you have raised that much money - I'm not being pedantic - just curious?

RedRedWine1980 · 22/04/2010 13:56

Personally i'd have been writing to Gordon Brown, trying to meet with him, rallying people together to make petitions to give them more funding etc, doing fundraising events on a more local scale but putting them out there to be done nationally (like your race for life type events that happen regionally but also nationwide).

Yes it would be harder work but im not buying the 'well its great because it raised money' to justify this kind of objectification. Call me a big old hairy man hating lezza but thats just my view.

To me, the depressing thing is that the charity calendar is now seen as the quick route to raise cash. Fair enough, you can't argue with money raised for good causes. But it's the message/ culture behind it that is so grim.

Our culture has become eroded hasn't it, to the point that the word 'talent' has now come to mean singing a passable vocal along to a well known hit record, and 'publicity' is something you get when you take your clothes off.

It's just rubbish.

There are millions of other ways to raise money - look at Race for Life, sponsored coffee mornings, Eddie Izzard doing 20 marathons or whatever.

Why can't people use their imagination and intelligence instead of their naked tits? What are we teaching kids with this tits-out culture?

whatthe · 22/04/2010 14:01

Red - you're a big old hairy man hating lezza.

But you're entitled to your opinion.

And yes I'd have it on my wall if it was men for a good cause.
My bruv and I used to visit my DGP's pub and snigger at the Big D nuts girl and "boobies" in the Sun -it's "Carry on.." seaside postcard titillation.

luciemule · 22/04/2010 14:01

I reckon you should have a look at this......

squaddie stars - op herrick

RedRedWine1980 · 22/04/2010 14:03

We used to turn to page three of the sun when we went to our Grandad's house and giggle at boobies too- thankfully I have grown out of that, cant speak for my brother though!

Morris - what message are the Masai Mara or Aboriginal communities sending out with their "tit's out" approach to life...?

It's Victorian dad all over again....

luciemule · 22/04/2010 14:06

can't believe you haven't seen it - thought loads of people had seen it.

Some of the guys that are on this are no longer with us

luciemule · 22/04/2010 14:07

RRW - thought it would provide some light, but still topical relief to the debate.

RedRedWine1980 · 22/04/2010 14:07

Oh god thats awful

I used to touch the willies in my gran's Grattan catalogue, and also blush at the see through bras.

Lol.

Morris - what message are the Masai Mara or Aboriginal communities sending out with their "tit's out" approach to life...?

Erm yeah- totally the same isnt it? The debate was quite reasoned until that little gem!

Hey Luciemule are u in Tidworth??

GetOrfMoiLand · 22/04/2010 14:08

That video is great - really good.

Bloody hell though some of those lads are babies.

that some of them have died.

EricPicklesFatNeck · 22/04/2010 14:09

lucie - that is v. sweet but some of them are just babies! i feel quite tearful

EricPicklesFatNeck · 22/04/2010 14:09

x- post getorf!

GetOrfMoiLand · 22/04/2010 14:11

Those boys look like some of my 14 year old dd's mates. Babies.

Very poignant making, isn't it.

luciemule · 22/04/2010 14:14

Nope - not at Tidworth - why, did you think you knew me?

See now why some of the girls just wanted to have some fun and make the calendar?

whatthe · 22/04/2010 14:14

LMAO Red - I am totally contributing to this with my tongue very firmly in my cheek and taking the p*ss.

They are just knockers, the more you saw them, the less titillating it would be.

I have a male friend stationed in Saudi who cannot stop having fantasies about women in Burqas. The less you see the more frustrating it gets apparently.

Which ever way you look at it society has a lot to answer for - either way.
