hmmmmm....suppose I could do my food shop with Ocado and then all the other stuff (bog roll, nappies, toiletries) in one monthly order assuming it is cheaper at Tesco. Will take some planning but maybe I could make it work.

Am doing BLW with DS and it is forcing us to eat more fresh fruit and veg, so would be lovely to get it twice a week.

TrillianAstra · 24/03/2010 11:15

When I grow up I want to shop at Waitrose. But for now I resent it when I buy something that I know is cheaper at Tesco (and equivalent quality like tonic water or loo roll or kidney beans).

roary · 24/03/2010 12:00

I am worryingly in love with Ocado but then I have a feeling when they discuss their stereotypical customer in marketing meetings there is a picture of me on the wall.

I love the fact that you can get various drugstore products (paracetamol etc), wrapping paper, magazines etc as well as groceries - even though these aren't necessarily cheaper in a busy household not having to make a special shopping trip to buy them is worth every penny.

Also: nappies are very cheap as they sell massive boxes.

Also: can I second/third/tenth the point about substitutions. i quit with Sainsbury's when they substituted a bar of fruit and nut chocolate for my ordered package of almonds.

I might never recover if we move away from the UK and have to leave Ocado.

glastocat · 24/03/2010 12:42

Since leaving the UK six years ago waitrose is the only thing I miss.

StarExpat · 24/03/2010 12:53

Ocado do sales on nappies and wipes and toiletries, too. I have found it to be the same and sometimes cheaper than tesco. On their website it even shows "tesco price match" where it does.

I'm in love with them, now, too . I used to think I couldn't afford ocado... but now I wouldn't be without it and it's so much more affordable than my tesco shops!

jenduff · 24/03/2010 13:32

Am I allowed to post a discount code on here? Have just been mailed a 15% off if I shop tomorrow - not sure if its any good to anyone?

NormalityBites · 24/03/2010 14:37

I heart Ocado. I've used Asda and Tesco in the past, but I've never been happy with anything. Gave up entirely and spent a few years heading to the butchers and greengrocers every other day. Wasn't able to do that for a while and ended up with Ocado. They come when they say they're coming, I love the colour coded bags, the list of use by dates to stick on the fridge, the organisation, the quality. Ocado makes me happy, and I wouldn't go back to Tesco or Asda even if they are cheaper (which on my shop, they are, by a few quid that I save on my delivery pass anyway) I wouldn't go back if you paid me! I've put on half a stone since I discovered their cakes though

Feelingsensitive · 24/03/2010 14:57

Read this and decided to a comparison on my supermarket.com. There were pennies betwen Tesco and Ocado. However, ocado was free delivery whereas tesco was £5 so overall it was cheaper. Sainsburys was slightly cheaper and Asda significantly so. I didn't click on the Asda and Sainsbury one's to see if the items replaced by My Supermarket were what I woudl have actually picked but I did with ocado. I too get drawn in by the deals Tecso does and the points scheme.

DuchessOfAvon · 24/03/2010 15:55

Ocado are coming tonight - and I am ludicrously over-excited. I haven't used them since leaving London - so I feel all sort of indulgent. And it's £20 cheaper than my normal Sainsbo's shop!

ageing5yearseachyear · 24/03/2010 16:29

i heart ocado too- i think i am an ocado evangalist! £9.99 per month for as many deliveries as i like with only £40 minimum spend?

I have it arranged so that every monday at 5.30 they arrive with bread, milk and wine!

I can change my order until 1 am the day it is due. By having it delivered on a monday any bargains i find over the weekend just get deleted off the list.

and everything in my fridge and larder has Waitrose Essentials written on it.

and having tried all the others, Ocado is the only one who consistently arrives with the right food and no substitutions.

Apart from our local waitrose which are lovely but only do 2 nights a week deliveries after 6.

BigTillyMint · 24/03/2010 16:40

I have tried Ocado a few times, and even with the 20% off offers they keep sending me, it is not as good value as Tescos.

When I do the shop via MySupermarket, Tescos is always much cheaper

There is a much reduced range of stuff at Ocado compared to Tesco

As a bargain-hunter, I look for all the offers on stuff that I normally buy, and buy those things (particularly if it's not stuff that'll go off) - Tesco's offers are much better

The Tescos delivery men always bring the shopping right into my kitchen (the same as Ocado) and will take old bags away (the same as Ocado)

However, using Ocado makes me feel posh

Asda is the cheapest supermarket, though!

RaceyLacey · 24/03/2010 16:48

Try using mysupermarket.com. Tesco comes up far cheaper every time. Ocado is most expensive, and many items are not stocked in Waitrose. Asda & Sainsbury's are much of a muchness but significantly more than Tesco.

TrillianAstra · 24/03/2010 16:49

Makes me feel posh too.

Pengimum · 24/03/2010 17:10

I live in a Waitrose free part of London so I do use Ocado, who are v lovely. Tesco is rubbish although cheaper...BTW Sainsburys are pretty good they do 1 hour delivery slots, cheaper than lovely Ocado quite reliable, apart from weekend deliveries, they do give you £10 off if they are late - and almost anything has to be better than taking my 3 DCs round our local supermarket - a yukky Tescos with v unhelpful staff.

lotster · 24/03/2010 17:31

Last Waitrose thread I was on, ( ) someone recommended Greengage Conserve for my order - it's yummy. My son loves the "yellow jam" now.

Am also ordering tonight!

Only thing is now I miss physically browsing through the Waitrose store...

I have a real dislike for Tesco's and the way they are trying to make sure they have a store in every town in the UK. They sell their products at such low prices that it concerns me about how much the producers that supply them actually get for growing our food, they are pretty much held over a barrel. I order a veg box from a local supplier who grows the veg himself, when I'm not at work and can get to the farmers market then I will stock up on meat and put it in the freezer, when I can't then I order it from Ocado as it's better quality then when I used to order it from Tesco. I have had a couple of problems with Ocado, a mouldy orange and a cracked tuna steak packet but they refunded these right away (as soon as I managed to get through to their call centre that is). I have also had the odd double item that I didn't order so have called them and been told to keep it.

DinahRod · 24/03/2010 17:47

I avoid Tesco as their "fresh" meat is not fresh and they couldn't give a monkeys if they make the delivery slot or not.

Ocado website though is a pita to navigate, they don't do decent crusty bread, have delivered squashed food, the customer service is very friendly but entirely toothless and, most irritatingly, forgot my free bottle of wine!

Actually find Sainsburys to be a much better experience - better quality of meat & pastry goods, 1 hr delivery slots with £10 voucher if late, and decentish offers.

cornsilk · 24/03/2010 17:56

I pay the monthly charge for ocado.Once you are in you are tied in for a year and they expect you to pay a tenner for a xmas dleibery on top of that. I rarely order with them tbh - I liked them at first but now find the choice of goods uninspiring. Much prefer Waitrose and now tend to shop with them despite still being tied into the ocado deal.

MissusRabbit · 24/03/2010 17:57

I switch between Ocado and Waitrose - love them both. Especially love Waitrose substitutions.....you often get bigger more expensive stuff but only pay the cheaper price you ordered! Bargain!

Asda might be cheaper but i think the quality is just awful!

onebadbaby · 24/03/2010 17:58

I HATE tesco online- every time there are LOADS of substitutions and they are never logical ones- for example I ordered 3 bags of doritos- 2 cheese and 1 chilli- chilli was sold out, so instead of giving me another cheese (as you know I like cheese as I have already ordered 2 bags) they give me doritos dippers things. I could give you a whole list of similar stupid ones but I won't go on...

Also, the carrier bags are rubbish!!! At least Ocado ones are bio degradable and can be recycled or used again as they are strong enough. Tesco ones are so thin these days if I do use them I need 2!! as one would just split.

BigTillyMint · 24/03/2010 18:04

I don't order meat or fish online - I go to the local butcher / fish-man

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 24/03/2010 18:14

I ordered a wooden brio-type train for ds a few years ago from Sainsburys, they didn't have a train (cost £1.25) so sent me a whole train set and charged me £15 for it I took it to the local store and got a refund as the driver dropped and scarpered.

Nettiespagetti · 24/03/2010 21:35

I have read this thread and bought into the hype and am now expecting my first delivery Saturday night!

Waiting.....waiting......waiting

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 24/03/2010 21:42

You'll never go back!!
