My last weekly shop on mysupermarket only showed a £3.87 difference in favour of Tesco. I'd lose that paying for a delivery slot (which I'd have to wait in 2 hours for instead of one, plus the extra hour that they are nearly always late) so I really do think it depends which products you select. Bear in mind that hoards of their branded products have "Tesco price match" next to them so I do wonder if you are being a bit choosy to get a £8 discrepancy with only 5 items

GoldenSnitch · 23/03/2010 16:34

Finish dishwasher tabs Tesco £9.99 and 2 for 1 - Ocado deal Any 2 for £18!!

Hovis bread Tesco £1.05 - Ocado £1.14

Only match I've found so far is on Fairy Non Bio. £7.14

5th item was a fresh cheese topped french baton which was removed from the Ocado basket as MySupermarket couldn't find a replacement.

GoldenSnitch · 23/03/2010 16:35

I'm doing a genuine shop, not searching for items that are more expensive at Ocado.

SloanyPony · 23/03/2010 16:35

Also (this is fascinating) I've just added 5 items that would generally appear on a top up shop of mine on mysupermarket. The items are a bottle of Hardys wine, a loaf of Warburtons bread, a pack of DeCecco pasta, a block of Cathedral city cheese (okay I dont use that brand but a Waitrose own so for comparison sake) and a couple of litres of semi-skimmed milk. The Tesco total is £15.88 and the Ocado total is £10.25.

That's a pretty good saving that I wasn't expecting and I wasn't cherry picking then - they are staple items in our house (particularly the wine

Add to that the inconvenience of Tesco, whereby if a shopper has purchased all the bread/milk/wine/whatever that you wanted, you dont get it delivered. Ocado is a warehouse, so allocates stock to you as you checkout, meaning that when they deliver, its very, very seldom that there is an item missing or a substitution. I think I've had it happen twice the whole time I've shopped with them - once was because the Cherry delivery was not up to scratch, the other time they substituted one type of hummus for another.

cornsilk · 23/03/2010 16:41

I have gone off Ocado after they wanted a tenner for xmas delivery. Waitrose online far better.

DuchessOfAvon · 23/03/2010 16:53

Well, its beaten 18 items from my normal Sainsburys shop by about £2.50. And the delivery charges are cheaper. Who knew?

I have been moaning about how expensive my Sainsburys shop is now. I'll give it a go from Ocado. WHat is the difference between them and Waitrose Online anyhow?

cornsilk · 23/03/2010 17:00

waitrose online is free!

cornsilk · 23/03/2010 17:01

delivery that is

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 23/03/2010 17:01

Ocado have an arrangement with Waitrose to deliver their products anywhere IIRC, so it's helpful for those who Waitrose won't/can't deliver to. I find them alot better and have not used another supermarket for home delivery, they are always on time or call to see if it's OK if they deliver early. I found that Tesco delivered alot of things that were very close to the use by dates so I'd have to throw alot of meat/soft fruit/bread away as it went off quicker. The meat from ocado is more expensive but it's alot better so it's not wasted. They send me a text to remind me about the delivery time first thing in the morning and the driver is always really polite.
Waitrose cakes are yummy but a little expensive, so is the speciality bread so be careful what you are clicking.

overmydeadbody · 23/03/2010 17:09

Depends what you buy.

If you generally buy the cheapest range of everything at tesco then Ocado will be quite a bit more expensive, but if you buy branded goods or more of Tesco's finest stuff there is very little in the price difference.

For me, Ocado (waitrose) is just too expensive, and I have properly worked it all out and done my research.

Hulababy · 23/03/2010 17:20

Our Waitrose deliver is good quality and free. However there are very limited delivery slots locally, and - as with all the supermarkets where they shop instore - there are subs. I have used ocado for over a year nw and never yet had a sub or an item not arrive.

Ellokitty · 23/03/2010 17:57

I was on Ocado the other typed in my shopping list and couldn't get a delivery in time. Came to about £68. So sent Hubby to Tesco instead. He got the exact same things off the shopping list for about £4 cheaper.

I find there is very little in it. Only difference is the lack of Tesco points!

notevenamousie · 23/03/2010 18:01

Asda is much cheaper than Tesco though - for our weekly (online) shop.

blogpage · 23/03/2010 18:14

Ocado don't list the ingredients on their website, so you can't check out the calories, fat content and so on before buying food online (or am I the only one who sometimes does this?)

junglist1 · 23/03/2010 18:15

Why have I never seen an ocado anywhere???

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 23/03/2010 18:22

Ocado isn't a supermarket junglist, they are a delivery company who work in conjunction with Waitrose, they have a massive warehouse in hemmel hemsted and send all the food out from there if this makes sense. Waitrose deliver to them, it increases their coverage.

I don't drive so each time I go to the supermarket I have to catch a bus there, feed ds and get a taxi back so it costs me £10 a week extra, I pay Ocado £8.99 a month for all the deliveries I want (providing I spend more then £40), it does save money.

SloanyPony · 23/03/2010 18:35

Ocado do list all the ingredients and calories. There's a little tab next to product info called "what's inside" which has everything.

lambanana · 23/03/2010 18:36

I use ocado and pay for it with my tesco credit card so I am getting some points albeit not double points.

I like the fact that ocado are upfront with their offers so you know when you checkout exactly what you are paying.

Can't stand the fact that tesco take off the offers at instore checkout so you spend ages after delivery checking your receipt to make sure it's right it never is.

IMO it's Sainsburys who are most expensive.

jenduff · 23/03/2010 18:44

Think its waitrosedeliver that don't list the nutritional info - although they do allow you to search by allergy info - v useful for milk / wheat intolerances and allow you to list by price.

And delivery is free over £50 however it doesn't deduct special offers from the £50 threshold so if you buy lots of BOGOFFs you can get free delivery on a small value shop.

blogpage · 23/03/2010 19:03

Thanks SloanyPony and jenduff. Yes I was thinking of waitrosedeliver, I didn't realise ordering from Ocado was something different.

So for a novice like me, why do they have these two separate ways of ordering Waitrose groceries, and what are the differences?

Skimty · 23/03/2010 19:13

I think the use by dates are a key thing.

I stopped using Sainsbury's when I realised that I would have to freeze everything on the day it was delivered because it would all go out of date within 48 hours. Might as well have gone to Iceland.

Also, the on-demand thing means I tend to do two shops in the week whcih stops me popping into the local shop and spending ridiculous amount of money on rubbish

GoldenTomato · 23/03/2010 19:22

I do my shopping via an on line shopping comparison site. Whilst you're shopping with one store it tells you how much your shopping would cost in the other stores (Asda,Tesco,Sainsburys and Ocado). Asda is usually the cheapest and Ocada is always significantly more expensive than the other three. So yes YABU.

electrofagz · 23/03/2010 20:21

Waitrose does lovely fresh florentines - Tesco's do not compare. I'd probably have ordered from Ocado by now if they'd stop bombarding me with 15% off emails - i've tried all the others (well, except Iceland )

electrofagz · 23/03/2010 20:23

I am so looking forward to M&S food deliveries - better sign up for the gym to coincide with the launch though!

thirtysomething · 23/03/2010 20:28

Ocado rocks, Tesco doesn't. Not just prices, but Ocado text me to warn me about missing items (which doesn't often occur) - a huge plus if you are banking on certain things for that night's dinner. Plus one hour slots instead of two and nice polite delivery people.
