Unfortunately it appears that Huntley will survive.

AIBU in thinking that it's a pity that the harm caused to Huntley wasn't fatal?

if someone commits a crime, they should be PUNISHED. if they are in there for life [pah!] they shouldnt be given any help because they should be in there FOR LIFE.
juvenile detention places sound pretty cosy, no wonder they reoffend.
give them a cell, a toilet and food. and let ian huntley rot there.
noone should thank a rapist for attacking him, how about thanking the system that jailed ian huntley and keeps him away from us?
im all for bringing back the death penalty for mass murderers though.
and rapists.
and peadophiles.
okay, so thats not rational, sorry.
but neither is trying to rehabilitate violent criminals. why should they get a better life when their victims never will? leave them to rot. forever.
if life meant life we wouldnt need rehabilitation programmes.
havnt read the whole thread but im sure someone has already said the two 'people' involved in the Bulgar case shouldnt have been allowed to have their identities protected.
they must be punished for their crime, keep them locked up damnit, wouldnt need to protect their identities!

SGB;

Gordon Brown said in the past he wanted Britain to be the number one destination for Chinese businesses to invest.

I don't think leftie politicians really care what goes on in other countries as long as they get their money...and as trade between the UK and China is worth billions, I doubt GB loses much sleep over Chinas appalling record on human rights.

MZ;

Think what you like about America, just be aware that they have been bankrolling us for years....without their help the UK would have disappeard up it's own backside years ago...

We need to salute the thick countries....they own us..!

China has the death penalty and their the 2nd richest country in the world...

But you can and have been executions for tax evasion so maybe that helps towards the state coffers.

careful there solid, i made a similar point about Baby P on the other thread and was called 'sick' etc. Apparently the reality that abused children can grow up to be abusers is not relevant to the discussion. Oh and it means that I think all abused children grow up to be abusers despite me saying that is clearly not the case.

It's terribly painful to have to really think about the full picture behind stories like these. And it's really hard to realise that it's terribly complex- killing/torturing abusers does nothing to help stop these things happening again. Crazily violent disturbed children, sometimes very little children surely need our help- these children grow up- at what point to we decide they are evil?

I've been reading about Greece this morning, financially it's shredded. The public service workers have been striking and rioting because they have had reduced or no pay. It's a perfect example of a society needing to have a good, strong economy in place because without it nothing works. Hospitals and schools will undoubtedly suffer but social services in general will be in a diabolical state.

So maybe having a strong economy is more intelligent than some of you think.

China may have the second biggest GDP in the world, but that is mainly due to be having more bloody people that anyone else.

In terms of GDP per head it's around 100th. So it's better thought of as a mid-table player that is rising up through the league.

Think China has the highest suicide rate too which says just what a great place it is - it also has no freedom of speech to speak of and even controls what you can look at on the web - maybe that would help curtail paedophile activity if we stopped freedom of information.

As for the ir economy - that is mainly due to huge, very quick economic growth - it hasn't always been like that and may get to a point where it crashes because the economy cannot support itself after growing at such a rate.

Can you imagine what a fun place mumsnet would be in China - not forgetting the one child policy and the country with the most billionaires behind the USA but still with at least 10 per cent of the population living below the UNs poverty threashhold! They may be a wealthy country bvut the wealth isn;t shared there is a huge disoparity between the rich and the poor so I don;t think capital punishment has acheived anything do you?
