Lady Gaga's new vid...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ95z6ywcBY&feature=PlayList&p=C4B9C7326E087E89&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL& index=1

I personally love Lady Gaga, but felt very uncomfortable when this came on the tv today, my little sister was visiting and I had to switch it over. I watched the video online and loved it, but I can't believe they are showing it during the day. The only thing missing from the edited version is the swearing and the close up of her lady bits!

World gone mad

I love it though.

i think with her burlesque past she is a very individual and talented artist. I love this video, all power to her. FWIW I don't think it's trying to be sexy and turn people on, I think it's more directly shock art. Better than tiresome pop videos with talentless lookers in short skirts.

BitOfFun · 16/03/2010 19:38

Was Single Ladies the one where she danced in her leotard for the whole three minutes? That whole 'so amazing' thing totally bypasses me.

BritFish · 16/03/2010 19:41

i was just thinking. do none of you like to feel sexy?
i mean, obviously a lot of videos out there are overly sexual.
but to be brutally honest, if i was to be in a music video, id want to look as damned attractive as possibly, and look sexy and all that shallow stuff. i like looking my best, it makes me feel good.
i dont blame beyonce, with a body like hers, flaunting it!

mamazon · 16/03/2010 19:43

I dont see why beyonce is conisidred so amazing either.

Pofacedagain · 16/03/2010 19:44

Oh gawd Britfish no one thinks lesbianism is to 'please men'.

Madonna and Britney, those well-known bisexuals, kissing in their vid because of their off screen relationship, not because they thought it would get them some extra column inches...

Look, I have little against the video, except that Beyonce looks uncomfortable. But it was directed by a bloke, for blokes. As was the Madonna/Britney thing.

Lady Gaga said she was a bisexual in an interview. So it MUST be true. Yeah right.

BritFish · 16/03/2010 19:51

pofaced
some people have implied that the lesbian kiss is only included to titillate.
they wouldnt think that about a male/female kiss.
im not talking about BEING a lesbian to please men, i may have got that across wrong.
but whenever a lesbian kiss is shown anywhere, people say its to 'get the guys going' because its a well known feature of mainstream porn, girl on girl action to get guys off.

and sorry, why couldnt she be bisexual? there are plenty out there you know...

Pofacedagain · 16/03/2010 19:58

So why do you think the lesbian kiss was in that video Britfish? Do you remember Tatu? Don't you see there is a pattern here?

I'm not saying she couldn't be bisexual. I'm saying just because she said so in an interview does not really mean that much.

Pofacedagain · 16/03/2010 19:59

daftpunk · 16/03/2010 20:01

Britfish;

I don't think lesbianism in pop videos is there just to please men....I doubt many men are into lady gaga tbh...(although I think lesbian porn is aimed mainly at men).....all the bi-sexuality stuff has been going on in the music industry for years...it's fashionable to swing both ways..

Right...I'm off to watch 22 fit men get hot and sweaty.....

BritFish · 16/03/2010 20:01

why not?
would you ask the same about a man and woman kissing in a video?
and why do you think she'd lie about it? if she said she was straight would you even think twice about it?

MillyR · 16/03/2010 20:03

Whether this video is meant to be a depiction of lesbians, bisexual or heterosexual women is irrelevant. It does not depict women of any sexuality in a way that the majority of women in any of those groups are likely to find authentic.

The attitude of some men that lesbians exist for their entertainment is a typical way that young lesbians get hassled by men, so I don't think that saying the video is not really representative of lesbian culture is homophobic. Actually, I can't believe I have had to write any of that - are there really people who can't tell the difference between gay culture and parody lesbians as entertainment fodder for straights?

Lady Gaga's real sexuality is none of our business anyway. This video is a performance - her job.

As for the children issue - of course she must know that a large part of her audience are children, unless she can't see her tour audience because of her huge theatrical glasses. Musicians aren't stupid - they know when they involve themselves with a genre who the audience for that genre is. If you don't like that audience, it is a bit odd to choose that genre. The idea that the self expression of the musician is divorced from the ownershop of a genre by the audience has only developed over the last 50 years with the rise of celebrity as we have moved from active participants to merely an audience.

I really don't get why any of this is an issue. If people want to watch this DVD, of course they should be allowed to see it. What I find amazing is that people are arguing that it is inappropriate for children, but that parents should just turn off the TV/radio. That effectively means you don't agree with the watershed and want to get rid of it. WHY? Why can't there be family viewing on during the day and adult programmes at night?

Pofacedagain · 16/03/2010 20:03

re man and woman kissing - depends on the context. In the context of this vid yes I'd say it was titillation. You can't honestly say that a butch lesbian in leather kissing lady gaga in chains is not for titillation. Can you? Really?

PS...whole heartedly agree that it shouldn't be available to the eyes of children.

Pofacedagain · 16/03/2010 20:09

It is all the coyness that really annoys me. Like madonna and britney kissing but no groping, katy perry pretending to like girls to sell music, and now this. If you are bisexual and you want to portray that in your music vid - portray it.

I think there are actually few films that feature lesbians that are not for male titillation. A good one is High Art. I'd recommend it. Written and directed by a woman, oddly enough.

MmeLindt · 16/03/2010 20:14

Jeez, this thread is like an octopus with 45 tentacles. I cannot keep up with all the points.

One thing I do have to say, to Carmen.

I never said that the scenes on the video could not be part of female sexual fantasy. I know that female fantasies can be very varied, what turns one person on would not turn the next woman on. Fantasies are very personal. This particular scene is not my cup of tea, but I guess that there are enough women who find it sexy. I still do not believe that it was made for women.

C'mon. The scene right at the beginning of the video, where the woman licked the bar of the cell. Did anyone find that sexy? I was torn between laughing at it and wanting to spray dettol on her tongue.

Pofacedagain · 16/03/2010 20:15

LOL at dettol.

Pofacedagain · 16/03/2010 20:17

High Art btw has very beautiful, compelling lesbian love scenes.

BritFish · 16/03/2010 20:27

actually, considering some people get turned on by feet, titillating subjects in music videos is a grey area...
well, i dont know, i dont know any men whod find that particularly erotic.
and isnt her kissing a girl portraying her bisexuality? ahaaa!
and thanks for the recommendation! we need more female directors around thats for sure.

god Katy Perry annoys me greatly. apart from the fact she cannot sing [saw her live at V Festival, i was embaressed for her...]
and that song! the interviews i read, she didnt seem very pleased shed been asked, thought that was a bit off.

MillyR-
of course there should be a watershed.
but then, its easy to turn off the music channels. why should adults give up their 'innapropriate' music videos during the day because children [and there are less children than adults in the world] are being allowed to watch these channels?
and if there was a radio watershed i reckon at least 70% of the music they play on radio one would be cut out....the lyrics to some things!

but you've said 'if you dont like the audience, it is a bit odd to choose that genre'
but they do like the audience. the ADULT audience. europop isnt just for kids.
and also, thats the genre the artist likes, so they make it!

CarmenSanDiego · 16/03/2010 20:28

The male director was hired however by Gaga or her people. She has massive artistic direction in what she does. He directed many of Madonna's videos too and I don't think she was being manipulated.

Struggling to see that Gaga videos are made for men. Her fan club seem to be predominantly gay or female from what I've seen. If she was going for a het male audience, she wouldn't be making the kind of gay rights speeches I linked to earlier. Why frighten the sheep?

BritFish · 16/03/2010 20:29

rofl, dettol!
anyone who gets turned on by licking prison bars has got some deep rooted issues right there!
"mmm....criminals....sexy."

BritFish · 16/03/2010 20:33

CarmenSanDiego:
so many people dont understand how much creative influence Gaga has. i think, if you HAD to have a scantily clad role model, shes the one for it, she's extremely hard working, talented, creative, and free to do these things without trying to conform. she's original, which is saying a lot.
[disclaimer, im not saying everything she does is original, but you can argue that nothing anyone does is original soooo]

missmoopy · 16/03/2010 20:35

I like lady gaga and of course the video is to court contraversy - she is the latest in a long line of artists, going way, way back to do exactly the same. Thats what music, and music videos do.

Pofacedagain · 16/03/2010 20:38

I tell you who blew me away and confounded all my expectations - Pink [another one who likes to court the bisexuality rumours] at the Grammys. Did anyone see it? She sang live whilst doing a whole [rather dangerous looking] ariel acrobatic show, and also got rather wet. It was absolutely spell binding and took real skill. I'd rather see women doing stuff like that and using real skills than doing the same tired old 'I'm edgy I snogged a woman' stereotype.

missmoopy · 16/03/2010 20:42

Pofaced, Pink was amazing at the Grammys....(rushes off to look on youtube for it)
