Lady Gaga's new vid...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ95z6ywcBY&feature=PlayList&p=C4B9C7326E087E89&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL& index=1

I personally love Lady Gaga, but felt very uncomfortable when this came on the tv today, my little sister was visiting and I had to switch it over. I watched the video online and loved it, but I can't believe they are showing it during the day. The only thing missing from the edited version is the swearing and the close up of her lady bits!

World gone mad

I love it though.

I think it is awful. And I really like Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Really shocked whn I saw it the other day.

Pofacedagain · 16/03/2010 12:40

I have a feeling that the director might have asked Beyonce to kiss Gaga in the car and she declined. I think that is why they might have done the sandwich thing. But I might be wrong. Same subtext anyway.

justmarie · 16/03/2010 12:40

personally i can't see a problem with images like this .
children don't whither and fade because they've seen a semi clad male or female
and yet some parents let their children see all kinds of violence on tv .
to me that is double standards

Pofacedagain · 16/03/2010 12:42

Music videos are another male dominated industry [surprise] The few female directors there are make very strong and different impressions.

justmarie · 16/03/2010 12:48

in what way pofacedagain ?

Pofacedagain · 16/03/2010 12:52

interesting article here

But I do hate that Katy Perry 'I kissed a girl' fake lesbian song.

justmarie · 16/03/2010 12:54

yeah that was rubbish, but i'd like your views as to how images shown on tv cause children to wither and fade

Pofacedagain · 16/03/2010 12:58

well I didn't say that justmarie. I agree violence on TV much to prolific. Degrading images of women make an impression though, isn't that obvious?

BritFish · 16/03/2010 13:07

I love Lady Gaga. from her provocative lyrics and videos, she is CLEARLY not aimed at children. some people seem to miss that when they criticise provocative music videos. they're not aimed at kids.

Katy Perry annoys me a lot, and so does that song. she comes from a strict religious family and has never kissed a girl [or so she claims]
maybe she annoys me so much because she is terrible live.
thats how you spot people who are truly involved in what they do and not part of the machine, they are GOOD live.

justmarie · 16/03/2010 13:09

not really .i have seen violence from a lot of levels . it's down to the individual really. before tv there was radio and that was blamed as were comics and films.
for me it boils down to parenting NOT what the child sees at all . if you don't want your child to see it ,turn it off.
my boys have seen a lot of things on tv as they grew up, do they disrespect women and see them as sex objects , no,
i thought we'd come away from the late 20th century with mary whitehouse being dead ... it seems not

BitOfFun · 16/03/2010 13:12

Justmarie- this article shows some of the damagethat the porn culture (from which this video is heavily borrowing) is causing to kids.

paisleyleaf · 16/03/2010 13:16

"they're not aimed at kids"

I assumed Lady Gaga's audience was children, the same as MillyR.

BritFish · 16/03/2010 13:18

justmarie
exactly.
i've just gone back through the thread and read a load of comments from people who are under the impression it is aimed at children?

HOW is it aimed at children. please, someone, give me some evidence of that.

someone cited 'catchy tune' which is bollocks. hardcore dance/club music is extremely catchy, does that mean it's aimed at children?
just because it's 'pop' doesn't mean it's aimed at children.

tit's not appropriate for children, we all know this. thats why its not aimed at kids. but for a 13 year old girl, there are worst role models than Lady Gaga, who encourages people to do what they want to do, follow their dreams, and not give a damn about fitting in to society. isnt this what mumsnetters talk about a lot? gender/sexuality conformity?
thats what Lady Gaga encourages you to break out of. She dresses how she wants, she does who she wants.
my niece, who is 14, loves her, and since Gaga came on the scene she has been experimenting with her look and borrowing my daughters clothes to bring more colour and interest into her look. there are plenty of teenagers at her school who al wear the same Topshop rubbish over and over, i far prefer her newfound individuality!

BritFish · 16/03/2010 13:20

paisleyleaf and millyR
what makes you think her audience is children?

EggyAllenPoe · 16/03/2010 13:23

i think people are missing a very clear camp vibe to this video - the scene of five girls in thongs dancing is not one you would find in a typical rap video - they are not making 'porn' faces and are not jiggling boobs to camera - its far more 'rocky horror' (and a teeny bit marilyn manson) than Playboy - it just isn't a hetero wank fantasy thing -

It is still a comercial pop video - but i see the likely market as young women & gay men - not children, (although they may like a repetitive poppy tune)

Beyonce probably looks uncomfortable because she is aware that she is appearing right next to a much thinner woman (hence also more clothes).

Is it suitable for children? i don't think it is aimed at them, but i don't think seeing a part-naked video is going to do them any harm.

i think much of the so called 'evidence' of harm done by this is specious, and at best anecdotal.

mayorquimby · 16/03/2010 13:24

didn't she make her name around slightly underground clubs around new york? quite an edgy audience etc. no reason to see her as being aimed at children.

BritFish · 16/03/2010 13:26

EggyAllenPoe
love the Rocky Horror description!

im not having a go, even though i did rant a bit earlier, but i've been sitting here trying to think of how in anyway Lady Gaga markets herself at kids and i cant.
apart from wearing dresses made out of soft toys, haha!

BitOfFun · 16/03/2010 13:37

I think pop acts generally want a wide base. For Lady Gaga this definitely includes children- they love her tunes and theatricality, amazing dressy up clothes etc.

Alouiseg · 16/03/2010 13:38

Loved it!

Clever, horny, shocking and stirred up a hornets nest on MN.

BitOfFun · 16/03/2010 13:38

Anecdotal, but makes the same point I did

OtterInaSkoda · 16/03/2010 13:44

Bloody hell Alouiseg - I think you and I agree on something

midnightexpress · 16/03/2010 13:47

I agree with thedollshouse. Kerry, I'm amazed that you are outraged by the PepsiMax ad, but can't see that objectifying women as this video does encourages attitudes such as the one that you abhor in the ad. Beyonce looks exactly like a blow-up doll in some of the shots.

And how exactly are women empowered by it, I wonder? Murdering a restaurant full of people (women as well as men) and then heading off, where - over the edge of a cliff like Thelma and Louise, perhaps? Great. Emmeline Pankhurst, eat my dirt.

Just because it has great production values doesn't make it art.

BritFish · 16/03/2010 13:48

BitOfFun.
of course, it does appeal to kids, but it is not aimed at kids.
although wouldnt it be great if there was a different child friendly lady gaga?
ie one who didnt have lyrics asking to take a ride on your disco stick.

i prefer this one, let the adults have some fun!
if you dont want your kids to watch her videos, dont let them.
you wont be able to protect them from kids at school etc, unless you are UBER paranoid and keep them locked up watching
...um...
Cliff Richard videos? shudder

daftpunk · 16/03/2010 13:50

Some of the comments on here remind me of my parents. I'm guessing they reacted in the same way back in back in the 70's when punk arrived.. "did they really just say fuck off"..!

Lady gaga is brilliant imo...haven't seen her latest video but watched bad romance 10 times in one day....(I think I'm in love)

Pofaced; Re; Katy perrys; I kissed a girl....maybe she did..? maybe she liked it..?

It was only a song...no need to get all deep about it...

paisleyleaf · 16/03/2010 13:55

There are Lady Gaga dress up games etc.
She gets played at the school disco.
That poor young fan who had that sad fatal accident at home, I think she was about 10 - which I thought was a typical age of the kids who play and dance to her tunes....she seems popular with my nieces.
And, the fact I don't think I know any adults who play the music.
