To think that the brides dresses and bridesmaids dresses in My Big fat Gypsie wedding are really tacky

Well they are! Nothing against the travelling community, they have good morals and attitdes, but imo the dresses were hideious! That poor baby in what can be described as a toilet roll holder thing . Luminous green bridesmaid dresses that look like Las Vegas showgirls, and brides dresses weighing 27 stone .

good morals and attitudes???

PortofinoLovesPancakes · 18/02/2010 23:40

Were you TRULY surprised?

pigletmania · 18/02/2010 23:40

Well they seemed to have, like more religious i would think, like no sex before marriage and sort of old fashioned type view on things.

pigletmania · 18/02/2010 23:41

I was call me nieve, I knew that they did not do things by halfs but the outfits

They are tacky. They are every little girls dream though, and the girls getting married re just that, girls. They were 16 and getting married, not sure at that age I'd want a simple empire cut dress with minimal hand stitched beading. Would have been the full meringue and 75 foot train.

Missus84 · 18/02/2010 23:43

They are exactly the type of dresses you'd expect if you let competitive 16 year old girls design them!

pigletmania · 18/02/2010 23:44

Yes 5 they were really young, dont think i would like that for my dd but as they said its part of their way of life and getting engaged at 14

PrammyMammy · 18/02/2010 23:45

link?

5inthebed · 18/02/2010 23:47

It would have been interesting to hear how long a marriage lasted in their community. Wonder if they stay married or if the divorce rate was high.

pigletmania · 18/02/2010 23:48

It was a documentary on Cutting Edge not sure how to make a link

OP posts:
pigletmania · 18/02/2010 23:50

I am not sure 5 they seemed to have the view that marriage is for life, mabey its lower because of their beliefs, mabey they are more likely to work at things instead of going for divorce.

OP posts:
runnybottom · 18/02/2010 23:53

Very low rate of divorce amongst travellers, its almost unheard of, as are unmarried mothers. Unfortunately also very low rates of school completion, literacy, employment for women, a much higher than average rate of congenital defects, and a shorter life span.

pigletmania · 18/02/2010 23:57

Yes because they marry within the family so mabey birth defects.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 19/02/2010 00:00

Ah well. If they are happy it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of life to be honest.

jasper · 19/02/2010 00:04

I watched the programme .
I liked the over the top dresses!

They all came across very well.

poshwellies · 19/02/2010 00:05

Yes, the wedding attire wasn't to my taste, but who am I to judge? They didn't come across as nasty or judgemental people.I found it fasinating.

AliGrylls · 19/02/2010 00:05

I dount they would do divorce considering they are mostly catholic. It struck me that most of them barely knew prospective husbands.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 19/02/2010 00:05

I found it quite sad that one girl's reception was cancelled a week before her wedding. How horrible for her.

pigletmania · 19/02/2010 00:06

They did but those dresses no not for me anyway. OK if you are a slim size but if your a 14 or over like me would make one look like a whale.

OP posts:
runnybottom · 19/02/2010 00:07

I don't think being catholic is the main thing. Most of Ireland is catholic and they do have divorce there.

Its still not unheard of to have totally arranged marriages in the community, which was pretty standard not long back.

pigletmania · 19/02/2010 00:07

I know Belle it was really bad

OP posts:
Clary · 19/02/2010 00:08

I couldn't get over what the guests (women) were wearing to the wedding!

Mostly tiny hotpants and a bra, as far as I could see

Still, I suppose it's just another way of life. No-one was dressed like that at my wedding (thank goodness)

runnybottom · 19/02/2010 00:10

Oh and the thing about the wedding venues....I know they made it sound like it was only pure prejudice, but it is quite common to have massive, venue wrecking fights at weddings. Thats not just a stereotype, it really happens. There was an extended period a few years back where a long running feud erupted at many consecutive traveller weddings and funerals in the west of ireland, there were shootings in hotels that held the functions and lots of property damage.

Clary · 19/02/2010 00:11

here's a link gypsy weddings

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 19/02/2010 00:11

I thought Bianca's dress in east enders was a little tarty.

The last lass did have a bit of a images.teamsugar.com/files/users/1/17470/11_2007/meringue6.jpg going on there.
