Depends on the cat really.

Katisha · 05/02/2010 23:01

YABVU

Cats are useless.

nancy75 · 05/02/2010 23:01

cats are evil, they eat the food then bugger off, and they walk on kitchen surfaces!

No cats are wierd - your friend one minute, scratching and biting you the next. I wouldn't put up with that from anyone, animal or human.

Dogs are the best.

juneybean · 05/02/2010 23:06

YANBU my parents dogs drive me mad, I love my cats lol

msrisotto · 05/02/2010 23:13

YANBU
Cats are awesome. Unfathomable, but awesome.

GrimmaTheNome · 05/02/2010 23:18

YABU.

Appropriately-sized dogs are also good hotwater bottles - I have a lovely warm dachshund draped over me now. He makes lovely gruntling noises which are much nicer than the lawnmower rasp of a purring cat.

No mice have tried to enter the house, and better still he keeps bird-murdering cats out of the garden.

Anyway, its been scientifically proven that dogs are better than cats well sort of

Pinner35 · 05/02/2010 23:27

Cats are fab.....dogs are not. I am currently teaching my DD to say "Daddy, can I have a kitten please?". We have mastered "Daddy kitten please" so nearly there

teafortwo · 05/02/2010 23:29

YABVU -

Dogs love and admire you even especially when you are doing crazy dance moves to your favourite U2 song in the shower.

Cats laugh at said moves and suggest in a blink that they could do better ones if they wanted to but have much better things to do that that!

cornsilk · 05/02/2010 23:30

dogs are smelly and lick their balls.

teafortwo · 05/02/2010 23:32

than that ...grrr!!!

(I was so nervous about getting 'that' in italics correctly I spoilt my post - waaaaaah!!!)

BitOfFun · 05/02/2010 23:32

I sneeze within metres of a cat, and they torment me. Give me a daft waggy-tailed dog who is pathetically grateful to see you, anytime.

cornsilk · 05/02/2010 23:33

Also dogs do really smelly farts and are sex pests.

joyjac · 05/02/2010 23:33

Dogs have family, cats have staff.

BooHooMonkey · 05/02/2010 23:33

I have a cat and a dog. The dog is a cow sometimes but v lovely. The cat is a pain sometimes but he is furry and purry and lovely. And he is a deep enough sleeper to allow me to indulge in games of cat buckaroo. Dog buckaroo is shit. YANBU

cornsilk · 05/02/2010 23:34

cat buckaroo sounds fun. Dogs are too stupid to play buckaroo. We have a rabbit who quite likes it though.

GrimmaTheNome · 05/02/2010 23:37

dogs are smelly and lick their balls.

My dog really isn't smelly and (oddly) he doesn't lick his balls. Or hump. He's a total sweetie.

Cats don't have big doggy eyes. They can't convey the same range of emotions by the drooping or pricking up of their ears. I grew up with cats, was very fond of them (apart from the gratuitous killings and scratchings) but once you've really known a dog, there's just no comparison.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 05/02/2010 23:39

Better at what? Cats- better at looking after themselves, exercising themselves, getting into small spaces. dogs- better at looking pleased to see you, eating whatever is put in front of them, barking when people come to the door.

guess it depends on your lifestyle and needs!

BooHooMonkey · 05/02/2010 23:39

Mind you I have a cat who thinks he's a dog, so maybe my opinion should be discounted.

cornsilk · 05/02/2010 23:40

This thread has reminded me that I ordered an Eddie Izzard box set over a month ago which still hasn't arrived

edam · 05/02/2010 23:42

That New Scientist thing is a desperate attempt by some doggy lover to 'prove' their pets are best. Measures like 'utility' and 'tractability' rather give the game away. But bless them for trying so hard.

Dog owners enjoy having an animal that worships them. It's a psychological flaw, of course, but as long as they pick up after their dumb mutts, I'm prepared to overlook their little foibles.

GrimmaTheNome · 05/02/2010 23:51

Whereas on the cat side, one of their hard-one points was 'popularity' - merely a head count. That just means there's a lot of mad cat ladies with two dozen of the blighters...reckon they just put that one in because it would have been too much of a walk-over otherwise

GrimmaTheNome · 05/02/2010 23:52

'hard-won'

LetThereBeRock · 05/02/2010 23:54

I must disagree Grimma, having grown up with cats and dogs, though cats more so than dogs.

I love both but in general I prefer cats, though my current dog is a particuarly fine canine specimen, she's very cat like in her ways which only adds to her charm.

My cat is very dog like and as affectionate as any dog you can find. He's always happy to see me,and not just because I'm capable of working a tin opener.
