YABU. Cats are evil. I have an irrational fear of cats and I don't know why. I think it's because our cat scratched me when I was very young, too young to remember but old enough that it affected me!
Cats of my friends do that thing of sitting on me as if they know

Tolalola · 06/02/2010 02:57

Yes! YABVVU.

psychomum5 · 06/02/2010 02:59

both make me as allergic, so both are as bad as each other IMVHO

so

YABU and yet YANBU.

LOve them both, however in our house one of our cats acts more like a dog, and the dog well she just thinks she's human. We heve a house full of pets in a quandry.

MoChan · 06/02/2010 09:44

Dogs best. Cats eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil.

Crazycatlady · 06/02/2010 09:45

YANBU. Dogs are fun but cats are essential for a happy life. Here are some of my favourite sayings about cats by people who say it a lot better than I can:

A cat has absolute emotional honesty: human beings, for one reason or another, may hide their feelings, but a cat does not. - Ernest Hemingway

The smallest feline is a masterpiece. - Leonardo da Vinci

"There is no snooze button on a cat who wants breakfast." - Unknown

A dog is a dog, a bird is a bird, and a cat is a person.- Mugsy Peabody

There is, incidently, no way of talking about cats that enables one to come off as a sane person. - Dan Greenberg

Floopy21 · 06/02/2010 10:26

Cats everytime.

Dogs: You have to walk behind them, picking up their shit (I have better things to do), I always feel sorry for dog owners wandering around with steaming carrier bags. They need taking for walks, even when it's cold/dark/raining/time for chocolate in the warm. They're more expensive to keep. They're more likely to maul a toddler. They often follow you around, looking at you with those needy eyes - surely children do that already?! They bark at antisocial times - loud enough to annoy the neighbour. They dry hump peopls legs. Then they get old, & smell.

I think you probably miss a cat less when it finally does get run over too. I think generally speaking, the bigger the animal, the more the upset to the family on it's death. Think horse versus goldfish.

I have a lot of pros for cats, but I'll only bore you with those if an OP goads me

Northernlurker · 06/02/2010 10:33

YANBU

A cat is a glorious thing. It's so wonderful to be sharing our home with an independant and loving feline intelligence - who is just here trying to drink my tea

Earlier we had some anxious moments (well i was anxious, dh thought it funny) when she jumped on to next door's conservatory roof. Sloping and slippery she couldn't get a grip but worked out which bits were better and explored for some time before making the 8 foot leap to the floor. You see - you just don't get that kind of thing with dogs.

AuroraB · 06/02/2010 10:39

ha they're ok as long as you're an owner whos garden is deemed too close to home to shit in and not the poor neighbour providing a cat loo for the dirty, stinking, sloppy pooing little fuckers

Southwestwhippet · 06/02/2010 10:48

YABVU - dogs are way better than cats, you can teach them tricks, they always think you are the best thing ever, they will sit on your lap whenever you want and if they do have an accident in the house it is about a gazzilion times less offensive. my mother's old cat has taken to peeing INSIDE the KETTLE [vomicon]

my dogs dont smell and also if they do catch a mouse they will crunch it up immediately not pkay with it for hours and loose it under a bookcase.

Dogs are definately the best!

RoseWater · 06/02/2010 10:52

Love 'em both

MrsC2010 · 06/02/2010 10:54

Nah, YABU. I grew up with cats and love the family ones (at home with my parents) despite the fact I am now fiercely allergic to them. I now have 2 dogs, and get far more out of/back from the relationship than I did with the cats. The cats just stalk around, eat and do their own thing. Occassionally they'll come for a stroke. We got so much more from our dogs, they're real members of the family.

cory · 06/02/2010 10:58

Dogs are the ones that crap on the pavement, where you can usually/sometimes see it and avoid it.

Cats are the ones that crap all over the herbs and stink the whole garden out.

onlyjoinedforoffers · 06/02/2010 11:01

YABU both are brilliant. I love cats and dogs all animals really i have 5 cats but always had a dog growing up .You can cuddle a dog and tell it all your worries and it looks sympathetic and will offer you a paw. A cat will scratch you in the eye and walk off. With cats its affection on their terms. They are so funny though

glastocat · 06/02/2010 11:02

Cats are plainly superior, dogs are stupid, smelly and so needy! As someone already said, dog owners just like being worshipped, which is an obvious character defect.

serenity · 06/02/2010 11:04

YANBU.

Dogs are needy. Cats do their own thing. (It's like having a permanent toddler vs. a permanent teenager, I can put up with the moods and misplaced sense of superiority for the blessed independence)

mateykatie · 06/02/2010 13:51

YANBU.

Dogs are needy and their slavish loyalty grates.

How boring is unconditional affection, anyway? Much better to have to earn it on a whim.

LollipopViolet · 06/02/2010 13:57

Well I've been brought up around dogs as my family hates cats, but as soon as I can, I'm getting one.

Love my dog, but he's too big to use as a hot water bottle!

I Can Has Cheeseburger!

pranma · 06/02/2010 14:03

YANBU cats are great no sychophantic cringing and licking.Have you all seen the Simon's Cat website?I cant do links but it is so funny.I have had both dogs and cats for most of my life and actually love both. There is a wonderful Victorian painting of a man sitting by his wife's body and his black labrador is sitting looking soulfully up at him.The picture is called,'You've Still Got Me'.The cat has probably left home to find a more comfortable hearth.

mateykatie · 06/02/2010 14:04

And this new research by Bristol University clearly shows that cat owners are smarter than dog owners.

Agree it depends entirely on the animal. I don't think its fair whyen people say they don't like a particular species. Animals are like humans they have a range of personalites. I have two fantastic cats who are well trained and behaved. They show love and emotions alike I have never seen in a cat. My parents on the other hand have 3 cats and have had many many cats in the past . They couldn't be more different. One will let you stroke him then just turn round and attack you for no reason. The other two are okay but equally different.

Dogs are the same some are so friendly and some will whip your hand off. My parents have a gorgeous dog but in the past have had the same breed of dog that wasn't.

I have found over the years people who don't like cats have never had one. They see them as vermin which is a shame. I adore my 'boys' and feel they are very much part of my life and family.

bishboschone · 06/02/2010 14:26

p.s that post is brilliant mutt....and soo true

McSnail · 06/02/2010 14:34

YANBU. I like cats, but IMO dogs are more useful, and waaay more affectionate.

Try training a cat to herd sheep or hunt food or detect cancer or dance with you to Whitney Houston...
