no, but then you couldn't just ask for "an expressed" could you? that would sound utterly bizarre. my point, I suppose, is that 'espresso' is a word in its own right in Italian - bastardising it into half English by changing the first s to an x is the problem, the term for expresssed coffee exists in English but not in the same form.

If you are going to pronounce things 'properly', where does it stop? DH is bilingual, but he pronounces things properly in his own language then in the English 'incorrect' way when speaking English...

Have had great fun reading this thread and practising the words out loud (good job DH and DS are in the other room ) - but how should I be pronouncing 'latte' then? The pronunciation guides I have found say laht-teh but this thread seems to be suggesting that is wrong...?

Lion- it's not the pronunciation so much as the product. Latte in Italian just means milk, so if you ask for a "latte" in Italy that is what you will get. "Latte" is a US coffee bar shorthand for "caffé con latte" (maybe Italian speakers can correct my spelling for me!).

Phew. I thought I had been embarrassing myself with how I've been ordering my coffee - although will bear in mind that if I ever go to Italy, it is only latte for DS's order and not mine!

In spanish espresso coffee is actually "café express". As the machine you use to make it is an "cafetera express" as it uses pressure, the same with a pressure cooker which is called "olla express".

So maybe that is why people get confused...

It's Mo-ett. However pronounce it this way and you will be constantly corrected by morons who got a D in O Level French and therefore are experts on pronunciation.

Do yourself a favour and order the Veuve Cliquot.

and apparently Taittinger is tay-tan-zhay. Again, stick to Veuve

to rhyme with serve, natch

And if you pronounce Cliquot Klik-wott you are beyond help and don't deserve champage, and will have to stick to lambrini.
