It would be pretty poncey to ask for two espressi though, wouldn't it?

EccentricaGallumbits · 14/01/2010 16:37

just not asseptible is is?

OtterInaSkoda · 14/01/2010 16:37

(many years ago and not coffee related, although cafe related) someone once ordered kweetchie from a colleague.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 14/01/2010 16:37

Oh... on a similar theme, my DH got asked if he wanted extra water and a larger cup for his "expresso" as it doesn't look like much!!!

Made us laugh for ages - double cringy wammy!

EccentricaGallumbits · 14/01/2010 16:37

great mind ronald.

ImSoNotTelling · 14/01/2010 16:38

Hold on one sec though.

YANBU in situation where people are saying it without prompting.

In a situation where menu is in forrin and they don't know any better but want a coffee, the poor sods are only doing their best.

duchesse · 14/01/2010 16:38

Have to say the panino/panini thing always bugs me but I never feel that the hungry queue at Good Taste is quite the time to come over all pedantic.

Rindercella · 14/01/2010 16:38

littleomar, just about everyone in the UK appears to say "brushetta" even if they are serving in Pizza Express an 'Italian' restaurant. Even if I, as the customer, ask for a "brus'ketta", they like to correct me, and repeat back to me "brushetta". It's my game now, I say "yes, a "brus'ketta" please". Grrr.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 14/01/2010 16:39

Fortunately there would be little need to ever order a 'scampo'

duchesse · 14/01/2010 16:39

Otter

Custard and ham, in pastry? Dirty bastards!

IsThatTheTime · 14/01/2010 16:41

Ordering a scampo would indicate some serious portion control.

LadyThompson · 14/01/2010 16:42

I bet BonsoirAnna only eats a scampo.

carocaro · 14/01/2010 16:42

me too

croissants - really pronouncing the T also was annoying

says me x cafe waitress

oh and also mumbling customers when ordering SPEAK UP FFS I DO NOT HAVE THE HEARING CAPACITY OF A DOG

bebespain · 14/01/2010 16:44

Ahh drives me mad. It´s the same when I hear people ordering a glass or bottle of "Rioka". Grr.

IsThatTheTime · 14/01/2010 16:45

carocaro maybe they're mumbling in case a big-eared MNer is waiting in the corner to shout IT'S AN ESPRESSO NOT AN EXPRESSO YOU ILL-EDUCATED SIMPLETON.

DelGirl · 14/01/2010 16:46

I had the 'Brushetta' thing recently in an Italian restaurant. I (jokingly) corrected a friend once and she said well we're in England so I pronounce it this way. She recently went to Italy, fell in love and has started to learn the language. We went to the restaurant, she pronounced it correctly, then the waiter 'corrected' her

DelGirl · 14/01/2010 16:47

I've noticed a few places spell it expresso so I think people can be forgiven for saying it wrong.

CheeeseOnToast · 14/01/2010 16:47

I didn't realise it was pronounced "brus'ketta"

SerenityNowAKABleh · 14/01/2010 16:48

When DB was working in a bar, this guy came in and said "could I have a tekwilla?" DB said "a what?" "A tekwilla" ... tequilla.

SomeGuy · 14/01/2010 16:48

meh. they are US coffee chains selling US coffee. Call it what you like.

SomeGuy · 14/01/2010 16:48

(unless of course you are not in a US coffee chain, but these days that's where most coffee seems to be sold, so there's a good chance.)

OtterInaSkoda · 14/01/2010 16:51

I always said broosketta when I was a wiatress.

bebe - how are you meant to pronounce Roger Rioja? Is it "ree-hoc-ah"?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 14/01/2010 16:51

I don't think they call it expresso in the u.s.....

OP posts:
duchesse · 14/01/2010 16:52

otter- rolled r (or nearest approximation) and French R type noise deep in the throat for the J.

IsThatTheTime · 14/01/2010 16:53

duchesse I have just inhaled my kweetchie trying that.
