I 'let' my son get jaundice

This is what a 'friend' said to me (after he was trying to tell me the guy I am seeing with cheat on me simply because he isn't him )

This actually happened a few days ago but I am still miffed about it... any of my MN FB friends probably saw this on my profile (he is now deleted, although the thread remains)

I am pretty sure I ANBU because I am pretty sure there was nothing I could do to stop DS being born with Jaundice...?

His reasoning was that I should have 'gone out' more when I was PG, apart from the fact that DS was born in winter so the amount of sun I would have got would have been limited, and I did go out at least once daily until I wasn't even able to make it up the stairs due to really bad SPD.

So AIBU, or is he a fuckwit?

fuckwit, definitely

LauraIngallsWilder · 09/01/2010 22:25

Jaundice at birth isnt caused by the mother not going out - its due to something else Im sure (cant remember what though!)

He is an idiot

MrsHappy · 09/01/2010 22:25

He's a fuckwit.

AFAIK jaundice is caused by the baby breaking down red blood cells after birth (and getting overwhelmed with the by-products), not by the mother failing to sunbathe in pregnancy.

littleducks · 09/01/2010 22:25

ROFL, oh yes sunlight exposure its great for jaundice.....a little tricky to get the benefits of the sun from inside your mothers womb but you should have a least tried

All you need to do is

pooexplosions · 09/01/2010 22:25

That doesn't make the slightest bit of sense.

Comewhinewithme · 09/01/2010 22:26

He is a fuckwit my dd was born in the middle of a very hot summer and she had jaundice.

BertieBotts · 09/01/2010 22:26

cheesesarnie · 09/01/2010 22:27

groundhogs · 09/01/2010 22:29

total and utter fuckwit! You are well shot of him, he's a twat, and a thick twat at that!

wukter · 09/01/2010 22:31

Fuvkwit. Where did he get that medical gem.

MsSpentYoof · 09/01/2010 22:31

I don't know how true it is, but I had always thought that DS's jaundice was brought on by the fact I had an EMCS? Something to do with them not being 'gripped' as they're pushed out?

In fact I have no idea why I think this? ?

Oh I had pre-eclampsia too, maybe that was my fault too

Is your womb somehow see-through and therefore available to receive the UV rays?!

He's a twat.

Reallytired · 09/01/2010 22:35

Lots of babies have jaundice. There is nothing you could have done differently. Jaundice often lingers longer in breastfed babies.

How is your lo?

scottishmummy · 09/01/2010 22:35

goodness me,jaundice is v common you didnt cause it.jaundice more common in boys (and frequent in newborns)

congrats on wee boy!

MsSpentYoof · 09/01/2010 22:37

Thanks Scottishmummy, my DS is two now

It's just this came up the other day, it had riled me a little

All 3 of mine were jaundiced! My DS had it worst, but he was prem. What a fuckwit!

PavlovtheCat · 09/01/2010 22:50

He is without a doubt a fuckwit. Both my children had jaundice. Lots of babies get it to a greater or lesser extent, and if you have had one with it, your next babies are more likely to get it (according to the paediatrician in the hosp this time round). It is to do with baby breaking down excess red blood cells which were built up while in the womb, and sometimes the liver does not do this quickly enough.

Jaundice is caused by having mixed race babies.

Well at least in my case it is. Every time I have a child I get at least one midwife say 'you will have to keep an eye on that colour, she/he is looking a bit olive/dark' That'll be cos their dad is black love.

Oh yeah - fuckwit BTW.

bluesheep · 09/01/2010 23:02

Blatent fuckwittery.

Bloke is clearly a complete pecker and best ignored.

Be reassured if he keeps up this tendency to spout utter bollocks to people then his luck will run out and one day he will be put on his arse!
