WasIBU to change my DS's nappy in seat on plane...

rather than the 2 inches allowed in aeroplane loos.
Okay first thread but, I recently went to Cyprus with DP, DS and DP's family (oh, it seems like light years ago). On the way out I checked out the loo on the plane and decided not to change DS's nappy there as there is no room. He's nearly 1yo and honestly there is no space for it. Anyway, no one said anything on journey, I thought nothing of it.

On the way back the plane was practically empty, loads of room, DS slept like the baby he is and then needed a nappy change, so I did it on the seat again. When I took nappy to loo to bin, I was given a right old lecture by head hostess - unhygienic, have to serve food, perfectly adequate facilities in loo etc. I said that they weren't adequate and if I couldn't safely do it loo, what was I supposed to do. No answer just severe looks.

After telling DP he did the next nappy change in loo. Turbulence meant that DS nearly fell off table and DP agreed that the facilities were far from adequate for a bigger baby.

Anyway, what I want to know is your thoughts - was I UR for changing DS in seats? Or was head hostess UR for making a fuss (no-one had on my outward journey)? Or should planes have proper baby changing facilities to make it all safe and hygienic?

Pee or poop?

Probably BU though.

treedelivery · 07/01/2010 23:44

Both BU.

You - because it's a bit yak.

Carrier - for poor facilities for larger child.

IggiBurns · 07/01/2010 23:44

Not sure why it would be less hygenic than blowing your nose, sneezing into the air etc.. Did you do it on the food tray? Was there poo everywhere? Sounds like she was just looking for someone to have a go at.
Lots of people prefer to change a baby on their knee rather than a table anyway, never mind the turbulence. Hope it didn't spoil your flight.

larks35 · 07/01/2010 23:46

Poop. I know you're prob right IWU. I didn't feel it at the time though - tunnel vision of motherhood!

Yes, planes should ideally have bigger nappy change facilities, but you obviously have the space constraints. I can barely move in the stupid toilets myself! However, I still think you were BU. Majorly so if dirty nappy, but still not nice even if only wet.

BlueKangerooWonders · 07/01/2010 23:47

have always done bigger babies standing up on mat thing in loo. Think you are BU, wouldn't have liked to be near you since there's nowhere else for other passengers to escape to...

MisSalLaneous · 07/01/2010 23:47

x-post. Sorry, but I think it is really bad to change a dirty nappy on a seat.

I change DD's nappy wherever and whenever. Probably would restrict self at a dining table but have done it under one of the filthy kiddy tables at McDonalds with other DC.

Nobody ever notices as I do it in under 30 seconds but DP has caught me and given me a tellin goff so I wait til he turns away and do it which v. much pisses him off.

I am a slattern, but so are the housekeepers at most public places.

larks35 · 07/01/2010 23:52

I did change him on a mat. No poo everywhere, rather a constipated type my boy. TBH I was so relieved he'd managed to sleep for a bit and eat and poo whilst up in the air, that I wasn't gonna then put him through the tiny changing table experience.

I have to say, eew. Presumably it stank?

But it's rubbish they don't have proper facilities, I don't know what else you could have done.

hobbgoblin · 07/01/2010 23:58

They stink when the poo is in the nappy. Just think how many people would have had a waft of it as you traipsed up the aisle. At least you only subjected your immediate neighbours I reckon.

Well it stank as soon as he did it TBH, I v quick at changing and taking the stink away. But going by current replies IWU. God knows how parents of older babes manage on flights.
Hobbgobllin - like your style, I think the only reason I got sussed is cos I wanted to get rid of the nappy.

YABU.

I would have complained if I'd been near you.

By all means complain to the airline if the facilities are poor but it isn't the fault of other passengers.

luckyblackcat · 08/01/2010 00:07

I have a disabled 5 yr old, if I can manage to change his nappy in an aeroplane loo then, yes, I would expect you to be able to change a 1 yr olds nappy in one.

I think YABU

I have changed a pooey nappy on my knee on a train. I was very quick. The train was in the station, 5 minutes to departure, lots of commuters getting on ... I wasn't prepared to lose my seat for the sake of a 30 second change. No one batted an eyelid.

larks35 · 08/01/2010 00:25

Am off to bed feeling unreasonable . I kind of knew that anyway. TBH am not likely to holiday abroad again for quite a while so hopefully the issue won't arise again. Sorry if i've eww'd and yuk'd people, but really is baby poo so bad. Remember, people fart, sneeze, burp, wee a little etc. on those seats. Anyway night all.

All errors in judgement can now been seen in a positive light, as thread fodder.

Night!

claw3 · 08/01/2010 00:40

If the plane was empty, could you have changed him in an empty row of seats?

Dont see what else you could have done, given the circumstances.
