nom nom nom - Fibilou's cake is almost as good as mine

fairycake123 · 26/12/2009 13:16

I've never had a Findus crispy pancake and I'm reluctant to try one, because I've built them up in my mind to this exquisite culinary masterpiece, and now the real thing is sure to disappoint

FolornHope · 26/12/2009 13:17

VinegarTinselTits · 26/12/2009 13:17

Fibilou · 26/12/2009 13:23

no, not thre mince ones (puke), the "chicken" ones.

OP, will it kill you to eat Pasta and Sauce ? Of course it won't. I'm well known for my over the top entertaining and have eaten in some extremely serious restaurants round the world but I wouldn't dream of criticising something that someone gave me in their home; and I would be even more horrified if people thought "well Fibilou's coming so now I'm peeing my pants in case she thinks it's crap".
Some things that MIL cooks I really dislike but I eat it because I would hate to offend her. I wouldn't dream of telling DH that I don't like -most- some of her dinners so I certainly can see why your DH would be upset at the inferred criticism.
Sometimes you just need a Findus Crispy Pancake to break from the foie gras and jugged hare ;)

geordieminx · 26/12/2009 13:24

my guilty indulgence is spam fritters - cant beat them with a splattering of ketchup.

Fibilou · 26/12/2009 13:25

one of these days i will get the hang of this

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 26/12/2009 13:34

well, am kinda on the other side here

my MIL is a great cook, makes it seem effortless

the IL's come here for Xmas dinner with great aunt (also fab cook)

I try my best and it is just ok

they make all the right noises "oh this is lovely, how did you do this/that etc..."

but I still feel a bit shit, hardly taste my own food I shovel it down so fast to get it over with, cringe when my gravy has gone cold whilst I fret over the veg etc etc

they never finish their plate and refuse all the trimmings I made an effort to buy/prepare

< sigh >

DH knows how I struggle and worry and sympathises, but I hate it really

roll on next Xmas... < not >

merrycompo · 26/12/2009 13:56

I would suggest takeaway

cornysxmasmuffmusic · 26/12/2009 14:05

I want to go to one of moondog's barbecues.

Bambinoloveseggbirds · 26/12/2009 14:22

My MiL once served me a roast dinner with a jar of sweet and sour sauce over it. I still ate it though - it's just polite. One crap meal will not kill you.

lazyemma · 26/12/2009 14:41

I love food and cooking more than anything but would never describe myself as a "foodie". It's a ghastly smug word, used by ghastly smug people, the sort of people who look down their noses at others for not being as gastronomically enlightened as they.

Some of the best meals I've ever eaten have had little to do with the food itself, and much more to do with the company I've enjoyed. I'm sure your mother in law won't let you waste away, and if inattentiveness to catering is indeed her only "flaw" then perhaps you might find it in you to overlook it, just this once. It is Christmas, after all.

FolornHope · 26/12/2009 14:48

no it wont kill me
i never suggested it would. just a small moan.

anyhoo

dh is here with coq for some vin.

OP posts:
Quattrocento · 26/12/2009 14:56

The problem is that people who do cook just can't understand people who don't

It ends up being a big ishoo for people who don't/can't cook, and they cook less and therefore the hurdle just gets bigger and more insurmountable and not worth the effort or anxiety.

But I think you are forgetting that it probably took years for you to be a halfway competent cook (well it did me, anyway). Years of fretting and not being able to get all the dishes cooked and hot and to the table at the same time.

So, you know, pasta 'n' sauce. What the hell. Eat it. Don't let it linger on your tastebuds or anaesthetise the tastebuds with much wine. It won't kill you

FolornHope · 26/12/2009 15:17

it wil not kill me
i KNOW that
its just a mild mannered rant

OP posts:
blueshoes · 26/12/2009 15:48

A good trick that people who don't cook can use is not to do any preparation beforehand, even though they are cooking for a large group of people. I have had that a few times so that by the time food is served 3 hours later, even pasta and sauce is quite delicious.

MayorNaze · 26/12/2009 15:51

invite her to you. prob solved

cupcakesinthesnow · 26/12/2009 15:51

Actually, I think Pasta 'n' Sauce genuinely could kill. It's so glutinous and thick it's like coating your throat in artificial cheese flavoured PVA glue
