Poor folorn it is a pain when you have a minor moan and people come on and say it is not the end of the world you know that.

I am a good cok but as quattro said it has taken years. When you are a good cook it is very hard to understand those who are not. I gave my sister all the ingredients and instrutions for a light christmas pudding yesterday. She still managed to mess it up. I don't get it, put ingredients in the bowl stir, put in bowl and steam. She looked mortified when it was served up. I was nice though and had seconds with enthusiasm, only for dp to push his away in disgust and say twinkle does this every year what went wrong.

CoqAuVin · 26/12/2009 16:00

tbh if i have her to stay i PREPARE for their arrival thus.
even if it were a marks ready meal i do SOMETHING

cornysxmasmuffmusic · 26/12/2009 16:06

But does she like make up?

brimfull · 26/12/2009 16:07

oh dh is a miserable sod when we go somewhere and the food is shit
i larf and smirk watching him poke it down reluctantly

cornysxmasmuffmusic · 26/12/2009 16:10

My mum used to do food which was a bit slop- like but it has really perked up over the last few xmases. Methinks that Delia is a big influence.
MIL likes to think she's a good cook and has some 'class' etc but her food is not so good in reality and she gets all her wine from Tesco.

Clary · 26/12/2009 16:12

you know I agree with FH.

The thign is, it's a BH on Monday and frankly if you are inviting folk over the last thing you need is to have to go to shops.

I have had ppl here this Chrissie and there has been food. I have planned it. I have bought it. I have cooked it (with some help).

It has not been fancy (roast chicken, veggie lasagne, cheese and pate, choc mousse etc) but it has been there.

I do think it's rude to invite folk and then not have a plan. Which I think is what FH (or coq) is saying, no?

Twinkleandpearls · 26/12/2009 16:14

Fancy buying wine in tescos

cornysxmasmuffmusic · 26/12/2009 16:18

Exactly!

CoqAuVin · 26/12/2009 16:27

not tesco

shit

Moresproutsplease · 26/12/2009 16:30

My ex-MIL didn't "do" food either. When we used to visit I'd always really look forward to the nice meal on the way home

CoqAuVin · 26/12/2009 16:30

i even covet maccy ds at glos tbh

Bonsoir · 26/12/2009 16:33

"Has it ever occurred to you that people can only cook what they have been shown by example to expect - so if a person grows up with frozen fish (which is a perfectly good source of nutrients by the way) that tends to be their horizon."

Education in theory enables people to lead their lives beyond the horizons of their upbringing...

CoqAuVin · 26/12/2009 16:34

like reading a book.. i knwo i know

MayorNaze · 26/12/2009 16:35

next year take a gurt big hamper with you filled with posh nosh

CaptainNancy · 26/12/2009 16:45

This thread has been an education... I have never come across "pasta'n'sauce" before...

Are you a little too obsessive about food? Didn't you say at least one ds is a fussy eater? hmm...

CoqAuVin · 26/12/2009 16:47

at xmas love nice stuff .
i dont think liking nice food makes your kid like beige stuff does it?!

CaptainNancy · 26/12/2009 16:49

Oh I don't know... if it's fancy schmancy stuff all the way, maybe they crave a little mac'n'cheese?

Oh Mummy, not caviar and blinis again? Can't we have pizza like Daniel's family?

CoqAuVin · 26/12/2009 16:50

lol.
now he preffers cheese strings

MayorNaze · 26/12/2009 16:53

dd2 ate hardboiled egg and cheese and nothing else for lunch. she used to like olives and hummus.oh for a poncey baby again ...

this thread is making me hungry and am stuck at work with no food

CoqAuVin · 26/12/2009 16:54

wot work?

MayorNaze · 26/12/2009 17:01

non-food related work

but plenty of unmonitored internet work

Hassled · 26/12/2009 17:03

I've just come back from lunch at ILs. We had cold nasty chicken, grey pork, half a baked potato and the options of half a hard boiled egg. And some pickle. It was bloody awful. We pulled crackers and I wondered why we bothered. Food to slash your wrists to.

To sum up - YANBU.

DuelingFanjo · 26/12/2009 17:09

why not take over something nice to make for them on the Monday?

Shops will be open so you could stop off for some pate, bread, salad stuff, have an indoor picnic.

I bet they'll really appreciate the thought too.

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 26/12/2009 17:34

pity poor dh who did a 6 hour round trip to drop presents off as he always does every year and wasn't even offered a biscuit. They wondered why dd and I didn't go along.

CoqAuVin · 26/12/2009 19:17

i have
i have made a coq au vin
all done
